ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective To investigate the effect of closure types of the anterior abdominal wall layers in cesarean section (CS) surgery on early postoperative findings. Methods The present study was designed as a prospective cross-sectional study and was conducted at a university hospital between October 2018 and February 2019. A total of 180 patients who underwent CS for various reasons were enrolled in the study. Each patient was randomly assigned to one of three groups: Both parietal peritoneum and rectus abdominis muscle left open (group 1), parietal peritoneum closure only (group 2), and closure of the parietal peritoneum and reapproximation of rectus muscle (group 3). All patients were compared in terms of postoperative pain scores (while lying down and duringmobilization), analgesia requirement, and return of bowel motility. Results The postoperative pain scores were similar at the 2nd, 6th, 12th, and 18th hours while lying down. During mobilization, the postoperative pain scores at 6 and 12 hours were significantly higher in group 2 than in group 3. Diclofenac use was significantly higher in patients in group 1 than in those in group 2. Meperidine requirements were similar among the groups. There was no difference between the groups' first flatus and stool passage times. Conclusion In the group with only parietal peritoneum closure, the pain scores at the 6th and 12th hours were higher. Rectus abdominismuscle reapproximations were found not to increase the pain score. The closure of the anterior abdominal wall had no effect on the return of bowel motility.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different levels of dietary hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) waste supplementation on egg production performance and quality in Japanese quail hens (Coturnix coturnix japonica). A total of 192, seven-week-old Japanese quail layers were divided into 4 treatment groups of similar mean weight (304±0.5 g), each comprising 12 subgroups (including 1 male and 3 females). Treatment birds were fed on experimental basal layer diet supplemented with 1, 2 or 4 g hot pepper waste powder (HPWP) per kg diet. The laying performance was determined by recording feed intake, egg weight, daily egg production, and biweekly egg quality. Results showed that HPWP supplementation to layer diet did not have any significant (P>0.05) effects on body weight and feed conversion ratio, while it had significant effects on feed intake (P<0.01), and laying egg weight, average egg weight, total egg yield (P<0.05). A 2 g HPWP supplementation resulted in the highest total egg yield (P<0.05) with quadratic effects on egg shape index (P<0.05) and albumen pH (P<0.01). According to the values in the study, the egg shape index of 2 g HPWP group was circular and; therefore, attractive to consumers. We highly recommend the non-economic value of 2 g/kg supplementation of hot pepper waste powder, especially for egg production. To conclude, HPWP can be used for quail layer diets due to its beneficial effects on egg quality since it is an economic and easy agricultural by-product obtained from red pepper paste industry waste.


RESUMO: Este estudo foi conduzido para avaliar os efeitos de diferentes níveis de suplementação de resíduos de pimenta na dieta (Capsicum annuum L.), no desempenho e na qualidade da produção de ovos em codornas japonesas (Coturnix coturnix japonica). Um total de 192 codornas japonesas com sete semanas de idade foram alocadas em 4 grupos com peso médio semelhante (304 ± 0.5 g), cada um compreendendo 12 subgrupos (incluindo 1 macho e 3 fêmeas). As aves tratadas foram alimentadas com dieta experimental basal suplementada com 1, 2 ou 4 g de pimenta em pó (HPWP) por kg de dieta. O desempenho da postura foi determinado pelo registro da ingestão de ração, peso dos ovos, produção diária de ovos e qualidade quinzenal dos ovos. Os resultados mostraram que a suplementação de HPWP à dieta não teve efeitos significativos (P> 0,05) no peso corporal e na taxa de conversão alimentar, enquanto teve efeitos significativos no consumo de ração (P <0,01) e no peso do ovo em postura, peso médio do ovo, produção total de ovos (P <0,05). Uma suplementação de 2 g de HPWP resultou na maior produção total de ovos (P <0,05) com efeitos quadráticos no índice de forma dos ovos (P <0,05) e no pH do albumen (P <0,01). De acordo com os valores do estudo, o índice de forma dos ovos de 2 g do grupo HPWP era circular e, portanto, atraente para os consumidores. É altamente recomendável o valor não-econômico de 2 g / kg de suplementação de pó de pimenta, especialmente para a produção de ovos. Para concluir, a HPWP pode ser usada para dietas de codorna devido aos seus efeitos benéficos na qualidade dos ovos, uma vez que é um subproduto agrícola obtido a partir de resíduos da indústria de pasta de pimenta vermelha de maneira econômica e fácil.

ABSTRACT Objectives: To evaluate the frequency of NIH category IV prostatitis, and the use of expressed prostatic secretions tests in an effort to improve the reliability of prostate specific antigen as an indicator, to avoid unnecessary prostate biopsy. Materials and Methods: 178 expressed prostatic secretion positive patients with serum prostate specific antigen levels of ≥ 2.5 ng / mL were included in present prospective study. The diagnostic evaluation included detailed history and physical examination, digital rectal examination, urine analysis, urine culture, and expressed prostatic secretions tests. Transrectal ultrasonography was used both to measure prostate volume and conduct 12 core prostate biopsy. Results: The prevalence of NIH category IV prostatitis was 36.9% (178 / 482) in our population of men. In our study patients (n: 178) prostate biopsy results were classified as; 66 prostatitis, 81 BPH, and 31 Pca. In asymptomatic prostatitis group, expressed prostatic secretion mean leucocyte ratio was higher compared to other two groups (p < 0.0001). The relation between number of expressed prostatic secretion leucocytes and prostatitis, benign prostate hyperplasia, and prostate cancer is analyzed. If 16 is taken as the cut of number for leucocyte presence, its sensitivity is 0.92 (AUC = 0.78 p = 0.01). Conclusions: The number of leucocytes in expressed prostatic secretion is higher in the chronic prostatitis group. If the leukocyte presence of 16 and above is taken as the cut off point, the sensitivity becomes 0.92 (AUC = 0.78). We firmly believe that our new cut off value may be used as to aid prostate specific antigen and derivates while giving biopsy decision.

ABSTRACT

Acute pulmonary embolism [PE] is a life-threatening and a relatively common cardiovascular pathology. Although the pathogenesis of PE is well defined, there is no ideal diagnostic biochemical marker. Previous studies showed an increased ischemia modified albumin [IMA] levels in acute PE; however, the relationship between IMA and right ventricular [RV] dysfunction has not been examined. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of IMA and the relationship with RV dysfunction in acute PE. A total of 145 patients [70 females] with suspected acute PE was enrolled to the study. Eighty-nine patients were diagnosed with acute PE via computed tomographic pulmonary angiography. Sixty-five patients with similar demographic and clinical characteristics were assigned to the control group. All patients were evaluated for RV dysfunction using transthoracic echocardiography. Serum IMA levels were significantly increased in acute PE compared with control group [0.41 +/- 0.06 vs. 0.34 +/- 0.11, P = 0.001]. There was no relationship between serum IMA levels and RV dysfunction. IMA levels were positively correlated with shock index and heart rate. Receiver operating curve analysis demonstrated that serum IMA levels higher than 0.4 put the diagnosis at sensitivity of 53.85% and at specificity of 85.96%.Although IMA levels are increased in patients with acute PE, it failed to predict RV dysfunction

ABSTRACT

Background: The purpose of this study is to determine the angulation of mandibular third molar in orthodontic cases which are planned for extraction and non extraction. Methods: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study in which pre-treatment panoramic radiographs of 49 patients, age range 11–26 years were taken from the OPD of Department of Orthodontics, Dr. Ishrat- ul -Ebad Khan Institute of Oral and Health Sciences [DIKIOHS], Dow University of Health Sciences. The angles between the long axis of the second and third molars were measured. Descriptive statistics were applied. Mann-Whitney U-test was used for intergroup comparison extraction and non extraction cases. Results: This study consists of 49 patients with mean age of 17.94 years. Over all result concluded that mandibular third molar angulations were from 8–94° in extraction cases and 10–73° in non extraction cases. However, the pre-treatment 3rd molar angulation differences in extraction and non extraction cases were statistically insignificant with p-value >0.05. Conclusions: This study evaluates third molar angulations in pre-treatment cases, the differences in angulation were like other morphological differences but changes in angulation after treatment may or may not be related to extractions

ABSTRACT

AIM. To present a case of Horner's syndrome which developped after neck surgery.METHODS: The patient was admitted to our clinic with the complaint of droop of right eye's upper lid which appeared after having a neck surgery for cervical radiculopathy. Full ophthalmologic examination was done, including pharmachological tests to confirm the diagnosis.RESULTS: The right upper eyelid was 1.5mm ptotic.Right pupil was miotic. There was a lag of dilation in the right pupil in the dark. Facial anhidrosis was present at the right side of the face. Right pupil dilated and upper eyelid ptosis improved with apraclonidine 5g/L application.CONCLUSION: Sympathetic denervation of the eye (Homer's syndrome (HS)) usually presents as a triad of ptosis of upper eyelid, miosis and facial anhydrosis. We present a case of HS after anterior cervical discectomy operation which is an unusual and rare cause of persistant HS.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated whether cytokine accumulation in plasma of platelet concentrates obtained from single apheresis donors was beyond the acceptable limits of white blood cell contamination at different storage time-points. Samples were obtained from 11 voluntary apheresis donors. All products were heavily contaminated with leukocytes. Sampling times from stored platelets were 0, 1, 3, 5 days respectively. Platelet, white blood cell counts and cytokines [IL-2R, IL-8 and TNF-alpha] were measured. The study found significant cytokine accumulation during 5 days of storage time in leukocyte contaminated platelet concentrates, suggesting that the platelet storage time has an effect on IL-2R levels

ABSTRACT

AIM: To evaluate genetic characteristics and clinical findings in a family with high myopia and colour vision deficiency (CVD).METHOD: Eight affected subjects of 42 members in four generations of the same family underwent a complete ophthalmic examination. Classical and computer adapted Ishihara Plates and Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue (FM100H)tests were used for determining the red-green CVD and full-field electroretinography (ERG) was performed to evaluate retinal function.RESULTS: Eight affected subjects had subnormal visual acuity due to high myopia. The results of colour vision tests were consistent with red-green CVD in six of these affected subjects. Fundus examination showed degenerative myopic changes characterized with generalized chorioretinal atrophy.Abnormal cone and rod dark-adaptation and diminished cone response in ERG were found in two subjects. According to family pedigree, it has been suggested that red-green CVD has X-linked recessive inheritance.CONCLUSION: The concurrence of high myopia with CVD in the members of this family may show a possible evidence for an associate genetic basis on different disorders.
