ABSTRACT

Background and Objective: Adiponectin is one of the adiposaitocines which secret from adipose tissue and is very effective in the pathogenesis of obesity and its associated disorders, especially in elderly people who are at risk for cardiovascular disease. This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of eight weeks of endurance and resistance training on adiponectin level, insulin resistance index in inactive elderly men


Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, 24 inactive elderly men were non-randomly divided into interventional and control groups. The combined training included endurance training [with intensity of 60-70% of maximum heart rate reserve] and resistance training [with intensity of 70% one repetition maximum]. The training performed 3 times per week [one hour session] for 8 weeks


Results: The eight weeks of combined training increased the adiponectin level in interventional group compared to the controls [P<0.05]. Insulin and FBS levels, insulin resistance index, and body fat percentage significantly reduced in interventional group compared to the controls [P<0.05]


Conclusion: The eight weeks of combined training increases the adiponectin level and reduces insulin resistance in elderly men

ABSTRACT

There are several factors influencing the water quality based on its usage. The quality of drinking water is of the vital concern for human health and life. An essential attempt has to be done to develop a water quality index [WQI] corresponding with different conditions and characteristics of the relevant river" or water body such as geographical, hydrological, discharge rate and pollution sources. The index is not specifically focused on human health or aquatic life regulations. However, a water index based on some very important parameters can determine a simple indicator of water quality. In the present study, the Gorganrood water quality has been evaluated by available NSF water quality index. Subsequently, the nine present NSF parameters' weights have been changed and modified using the analytical hierarchy process [AHP] method as well as experts' opinions in the field in a way to satisfy local conditions. In the newly developed WQI, more weights are given to relation with these parameters it can be said that the factors like dissolved oxygen [Do], fecal coliform [Fc] and biological oxygen demand [BOD] when compared with NSF-WQI

ABSTRACT

To determine the protective impact of efficient serum copper concentration on BMD in women and to asses its impression on bone. six hundred healthy women through a national project in Iran, IMOS, were selected via a cluster random sampling and enrolled the study. They were divided to pre menopausal [404/600, 67.7% of total] and post menopausal [190/600, 32%of total] groups. BMD was measured by biphotonic absorptimetry DEXA for hip and lumbar spine. Morning serum copper concentration was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. Mean age was 40.92 +/- 14.8yr .Mean serum copper concentration 105.85 +/- 40.15microg/dl and mean BMI= 27.13 +/- 4.81 kg/m2.Totaly 2.4% was smoking, 5% had regular physical activities three times a week and 17.5% was copper deficient. Prevalence of Osteoporosis in postmenopausal women was 12.9% in copper deficient persons vs. 11.3% in normal serum copper ones. No significant difference found according to serum copper concentration associated with BMI, age and vitamin D. Spine BMD revealed a significant correlation with serum copper content. [P= 0.001]. This correlation also existed for Total hip [P< 0.05]. Premenopausal women with serum copper level above 105 microg/dl revealed a significant difference in hip BMD compared to whom with less copper concentration. 1.02 +/- 0.13kg/m2 vs. 0.97 +/- 0.13kg/m2 [P = 0.001]. Copper had an independent role on determining hip BMD in pre menopaused women [P= 0.001]. copper has an independent role on bone density in all healthy women. It could have an adjourning factor for bone loss as well as a protective agent for Osteoporosis

ABSTRACT

A growing body of investigations demonstrated the essence role of zinc on growing and maintaining bone tissue .The idea that zinc could enhance bone content and adjourn or prevent osteoporosis in men, has been experimented as a hypothesis. Six hundred healthy men [age 20-69 yr] through Iranian Multicenter Osteoporosis Study [IMOS] which is a national project running in 5 provinces in Iran for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis was selected via a cluster random sampling and enrolled the study. Bone Mineral Density was measured by biphotonic absorptimetry DEXA for hip and lumbar spine. Zinc morning serum concentration was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. SPSS 11.5 was used for data analysis. Body Mass Index [BMI] has been calculated by Weight [kg]/Height [meter][2] for each person. The mean age was 40.83 +/- 15.06 yr .Mean BMI was 24.79 +/- 3.94 kg/m2, overlay 27.3% were smoking, 12.5% had regular physical activities three times a week and 12.2% had a history of renal stone. Among them 30.1% had zinc depletion, 56.8% normal range and 13.1% had serum zinc excess. 57.1% of individuals over 40 yr with hip osteoporosis were zinc deficient whereas 22.1% of them with normal BMD had this deficiency [P< 0.001]. It is concluded that zinc has a positive association with BMD in men over 40 yr and zinc deficiency is more common in osteoporotic individuals

ABSTRACT

Objetivo: Conocer las causas de reingreso, las características perinatales y la morbimortalidad de una población de recién nacidos readmitidos en el primer mes de vida y analizar las estrategias posibles que resulten en la mejor atención de la madre y el RN en la sala de alojamiento conjunto.Material y métodos: Estudio prospectivo, analítico, observacional, incluyeron todos los recién nacidos egresados del Servicio de alojamiento conjunto y readmitidos en el Departamento de Neonatología del Centro Materno Infantil (San Lorenzo), en los primeros 28 días de vida, en el periodo comprendido de enero del 2004 a junio del 2005. Resultados: Total de RN readmitidos 51. Promedio de edad materna 24 años (16-41), 76% de las madres presentaron CPN suficiente, en el grupo de pacientes readmitidos el 40% tuvieron CPN insuficientes y 30% en el límite (4). El 57% (29/51) nuligesta, 20% primigesta, nacieron por cesárea el 52% de los RN. Peso de nacimiento promedio 3189 g. DS + 593, edad gestacional promedio 38 semanas DS + 2, 41% fueron RN casi de término y limítrofe (35-37 sem.). 63% masculinos, el 100% presentaron Apgar de 8/9. Edad media al alta 3 días + 1, el 100% con lactancia materna exclusiva, días de vida al reingreso 9.3 + 4. Los diagnósticos principales fueron: hiperbilirrubinemia 59%, de los cuales el 90% fue sin incompatibilidad y sin hemólisis, el 99% requirió sólo luminoterapia y un paciente exanguinotrasfusión. El 18% reingresó por mala técnica alimentaria, el 16% (8) con diagnóstico de malformaciones congénitas mayores, dos pacientes fallecieron, constituyendo el 3.9% del total.Conclusiones: Las causas de readmisión hospitalaria en este grupo de RN fueron hiperbilirrubinemia y mala técnica alimentaria; la gravedad de la readmisión se asoció a diagnóstico de infecciones y malformaciones congénitas
