ABSTRACT

A prospective study of infants, aged 1-2 years, who consulted at the National Kidney Insitute (NKI) for urinary tract infection from the period of August, 1992 to July 31, 1993 was performed. There was a total of 38 male infants studied. 19 underwent circumcision using the coronal technique and 19 remained uncircumcised and acted as controls. The mean age of the cases was 1.6 years. Our study showed that only 5.26% of circumcised male infants subsequently developed recurrent urinary tract infection, compared to 21.05% of uncircumcised male infants who developed recurrent urinary tract infection. It was observed that majority of the uncircumcised children who consulted for urinary tract infection were phimotic, which probably predisposed to preputial bacterial colonization and urinary tract infection. Computed relative risk is 0.25, suggesting a protective effect of circumcision on recurrent urinary tract infection in male infants 1-2 years of age.

ABSTRACT

Fourniers gangrene is a fulminant, rapidly spreading infection of the scrotum that also involves the perineum, penis, and abdominal wall. Early report have noted that inspite of early consultations, many patients eventually succumb to sepsis. The mortality and morbidity rates in our series were lower as compared to other series and we attribute this favorable outcome to progressive initial care. Early recognition, early hemodynamic stabilization, antibiotic coverage for aerobes and anaerobes, and adequate surgical debridement followed by equally aggressive post-operative care were noted to alter the course of these patients.

ABSTRACT

Since prostate specific antigen (PSA) immunoassay has been made locally available, it has been used to detect and follow-up with prostate cancer. Although still controversial, its usefulness as a screening procedure has been extensively studied abroad. The records of 95 patients referred to our institution for prostatic evaluation and management were reviewed. The serum PSA levels and digital rectal examinations (DRE) findings were correlated with the histopathologic results. Using 10 ng/ml serum as the cut-off for abnormal PSA levels, a sensitivity rate of 93.6%, specificity of 52.7%, positive predictive value of 61.3% and an overall accuracy of 70.0% were observed.

ABSTRACT

In the Philippines, there is no published data on standard normal values of sperm analysis among fertile Filipino males. This study aims to show the semen parameters of healthy fertile Filipino males aged 20-40 years. Convenience sampling was used. One hundred twenty volunteers were recruited and the semen samples were analyzed for sperm density, motility and morphology. Sperm density ranged from 17.1 to 201.6 million/ml (median 63.3 million/ml). Normal tail morphology range was 55 to 99% (median 85%). Normal tail morphology ranged from 55 to 99% (median 71.5%). These correlate with the standard set by the World Health Organization and is consistent with studies done abroad.
