ABSTRACT

100 patients: 80 males and 20 females complaining of various lower urinary tract symptoms in the form of frequency, dysuria, hematuria and pain were studied clinically, laboratory, cystoscopically [including cystoscopic biopsy] and pathologically. Their age ranged from 20-80 years. On cystoscopic examination some of these cases were suspected to be neoplastic. The pathological study revealed papillary or polypoid reactive inflammatory lesions of urinary bladders of these cases. The microscopic examination of these lesions revealed either thin finger like projections or broad based polypoid lesions covered by hyperplastic transitional epithelium mostly with scattered Brunn's nests, cystitis cystica or Cystitis glandularis. The surrounding mucosa revealed hyperplastic or metaplastic lesions. Sixty% of the cases examined revealed an underlying mild to moderate schistosomal infestation. Cases clinically and/or laboratory diagnosed as Schistosomiasis or cystoscopically based on apparent sandy patches or other cystoscopic bilharzial lesions and those with dense egg deposition were excluded from the study

ABSTRACT

Seven cases of gastrointestinal lymphomas, 2 secondary and 5 primary and one case of pseudolymphoma presented to Kasr El-Aini Casualty Unit as surgical emergency due to massive hemorrhage, peritonitis or intestinal obstruction. None of these cases were diagnosed before surgery. Surgical resection was undertaken as a management for the acute condition, and pathological examination proved the diagnosis. This study showed that gastrointestinal lymphomas can present for the first time as an acute abdomen or by massive hemorrhage and the surgeon has to consider them in the differential diagnosis of acute abdomen and as a cause of hemorrhage from the gastrointestinal tract particularly in patients who previously have given a history of non specific symptoms

ABSTRACT

The present study included 99 patients, 41 with breast masses, 28 with lymphadenopathy and 30 patients with thyroid swelling. The technique of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology is hereby described. The sensitivity and specificity rates together with the positive and negative predictive values of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology were all highly satisfactory in patients with breast masses [92.3%, 100%, and 96.7% respectively] and those with lymphadenopathy [89.5%, 100% 100% and 84.6% respectively]. However, in patients with thyroid nodules, these rates were less satisfactory [66.7%, 100%, 100% and 92.9% respectively]. In all cases the paired Chi-Square test showed statistically insignificant difference between the results of the two biopsy techniques. It is concluded that FNAC can replace open surgical biopsy in most of the studied cases

ABSTRACT

Schistosomal hepatosplenomegaly is a major problem among adults and children. HB infection which occurs on top of schistosomiasis is an important factor in determining the prognosis and outcome of the disease. Three groups of children were studied to determine the incidence of HB antigenaemia among them :a] 20 children with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis with no clinical evidence of hepatocellular failure. The histology proved to be schistosomal periportal fibrosis. 40% were HBs positive. b] 40 children with simple urinary or intestinal schistosomiasis. 10% were HBs positive.c] 24 normal controls of matched age. 4.1% had HBs antigenaemia. There is significant statistical difference between hepatosplenic schistosomiasis and normal controls. It is believed that HB infection on top of schistosomiasis determines progression to chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, hepatocellular failure and portal hypertension, which are common among adult. It is suggested that schistosomal children should be among the high risk groups and should have the priority for HB vaccination early before exposure to HB infection

ABSTRACT

Tumours of the lateral ventrical constitute a segregate and rare entity due to the similarity in their clinical course and presentation, radiological picture and surgical management 28 cases of lateral ventricular tumours are the subject of this study with a female prepondrance [1.5: 1] and greatest incidenct in the third decade of life. The symptomatology was vagie, mainly those of increased intracranial pressure without localization or lateralization with a rather short duration [5% less than 3 months]. All the patients were subjected to C.T> scanning. The mortality rate in the series was high, mounting to 32% mainly in the first cases, while in the last 14 cases due to improvement of the technique, the results improved markedly. Postoperative haemorrhage has been the most common and serious complication faced with, followed by infection. Radiotherapy was resorted to for cases of ependymoma with postoperative residual

ABSTRACT

Immunohistochemical localization of Immunoglobulin A [IgA] and Immunoglobulin G [IgG] was studied in sections of gastric body mucosa taken from 17 Egyptian patients with various forms of chronic gastritis. Sections were fixed in formalin, embedded in paraffin, and stained with Immunoperoxidase technique for detection of IgA and IgG in the immunocytes, the epithelial lining of gastric mucosa, and the extracellular spaces. The results showed weak expression of IgA immunocytes, moderate expression of IgG intraepithelial positive sites, and mild expression of IgG positive sites. The results were discussed in relation to the local defense factors in chronic gastritis, and the possible malignant transformation in the gastric body mucosa
