ABSTRACT

Introduction: Methamphetamine is a powerful stimulant that has an extremely harmful effect on the nervous system, compromising the individual's health. This study aimed to investigate the changes of blood levels of endorphin, serotonin and dopamine and some physical health variables following a period of aerobic training in men with history of addiction to methamphetamine

Materials and Methods: Thirty men with history of addiction to methamphetamine were purposefully selected and randomly divided into two groups of experimental [n=15] and control [n=15]. The experimental group took part in aerobic training on sand for 8 weeks, 3 days a week, with an intensity of 60-75% of maximum heart rate, while the control group had no physical activity. Circulating levels of serotonin, dopamine and endorphin, body mass index [BMI], waist-tohip ratio [WHR], body fat percentage and cardio-respiratory were measured before and 24 hours after the last training session. To measure levels of neurotransmitters, 5 ml blood was collected from the brachial vein of subjects

Results: Eight weeks of aerobic training increased circulating levels of serotonin, dopamine, endorphin and, cardio-respiratory significantly in the experimental group, compared to controls [P<0.05], while body fat percentage, BMI and WHR did not change significantly [P>0.05]

Conclusion: Aerobic training can beneficially impact circulatory levels of serotonin, dopamine and endorphin and cardio-respiratory endurance, both for improving the physical status and health of men with history of addiction to methamphetamine and as a non-drug treatment during rehabilitation

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Although caesarean section as a way to save both mother and child has been accepted in an emergency state, but its harmful consequences such as infectious diseases, anesthesia complications, and postpartum depression which could be a threat to the health of the mother, child, family and the community. The aim of this study was to investigate the factors associated with cesarean delivery choice among pregnant women living in the city of Jiroft

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 145 pregnant women attending public and private medical centers in Jiroft. Data collection instrument was a questionnaire designed by the researchers. The validity of the questionnaires was confirmed and the reliability was assessed using Cronbach›s alpha coefficient which was 84%. Data were analyzed by SPSS v.19 and Logistic regression test was used [p-value=0.05]

Results: The mean age of the study participants' was 4 +/- 34 years and 75% of the women in the study chose cesarean delivery as the best method. Most participants in the study were pregnant for 7 - 5month [35.25%] and experienced the first pregnancy [44.1%]. The majority of them [52.4%] reported friends and family as a source of information for choosing cesarean section as the delivery method. The results of logistic regression showed that the location of prenatal care, abortion, economic status, place of birth, family history of cesarean delivery, and previous cesarean were significantly related with choosing cesarean as the delivery method

Conclusion: A high percentage [75%] of participants in this study had chosen cesarean section as the delivery method. Therefore, authorities should consider it as a public health problem. A way to overcome this problem is increasing the awareness of pregnant women of normal delivery benefits through the education

The subjects were assessed by a demographic questionnaire, Eysenck's personality Inventory and total average of grades as academic achievement. Data analysed using the t-test, analysis of varivance and pearson correlation

Findings: Mean score in introversion was 12.41 and in neuroticism 12.10. 25.5% of students were successful in studying and 25% were unsuccessful and others were moderate. There was a significant negative correlation between academic achievement with neuroticism [-0.1171, P=0.045]

Conclusion: According to the findings, student's mental condition had effects on their academic achievement. The follow up of student's mental health and personality and activation of mental consultation centers for them is necessary
