ABSTRACT

Plasma adhesive proteins [fibronectin [FN], laminine [LN] and procollagen III [PC III]] were tested in 13 cases with acute lymphoblastic leukemia [ALL], 20 patients diagnosed of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, one Hodgkin disease and one patient diagnosed of Burkits lymphoma, as well as 12 apparently normal healthy, age and sex matched subjects were used for comparison. The plasma levels of LN and PC III were significantly reduced in leukemias than lymphomas, while FN was insignificant. In conclusion, some adhesive proteins [LN and PC III] have an indirect effect in localization of the lymphoproliferative disease, in lymphatic organs and circulating blood

ABSTRACT

Thirty patients with recent myocardial infarction [MI] and 30 patients with ischemic heart disease [IHD] without infarction as well as 10 healthy controls were subjected to the study. Leucocytosis with neutrophilia were detected in both groups but it was more prominent in MI group that IHD group. Neutrophils in both groups showed toxic granulation [degenerative index], meanwhile the phagocytic activity of such cells were significantly increased. Neutrophil myeloperoxidase [MPO] were significantly diminished in MI group in spite of normal MPO scores in IHD group. On the other hand, the MI group showed significant elevation in the scores of neutrophils alkaline phosphatase [NAP], nitro-blue tetrazolium [NBT], nonspecific esterase [NSE] and chloro-acetate esterase [CAE] when compared with both normal control and IDH groups. So, it was suggested that the use of the total leucocytic count, neutrophil count, degenerative index [DI] and MPO, one cytochemical stain either NAP, CAE, NSE or NBT may be used as a first aid investigations [cheap and rapid] to distinguish between MI and IHD

ABSTRACT

The present work involved the study of the effects repeated hemodialysis fibrinogen level, plasminogen activators [PA], fibrin degradation products [FDP], 2-microglobulin, 1-antiplasmin, antithrombin III and 2 macroglobulin. The study revealed that fibrinogen level was found to be significantly increased either in nondialyzed or dialyzed [more than 20 times] patients. A significant decrease in plasminogen activators and FDP as well as a dramatic reduction in 2-antiplasmin were detected in comparison with control with mild significant increased in 2-antiplasmin after hemodialysis. Alpha-2 macroglobulin, beta-2 microglobulin and antithrombin III were found to be significantly decreased in chronic renal failure patients either dialyzed or nondialyzed. It was suggested that chronic renal failure may inactive the coagulation inhibitor to some extent with mild depression of the fibrinolytic system, may lead to glomerular fibrin deposition with renal microthrombosis. Meanwhile, the hemodialysis improves only the fibrinolytic system within limits

ABSTRACT

Articular features in 40 patients [mean age 41 +/- 3.4 sem and range 35 to 66 years] with hyperlipidemia were analyzed. Nine patients had transient migratory peripheral asymmetrical arthritis. Eight patients had tendon achilles pain. Six patients had inflammation of tendon achilles. Seven patients had tenosynovitis. Three patients had trigger fingers. Five patients had oligomonoarticular lesion and two patients had bilateral symmetrical peripheral, seronegative transient polyarthritis. Ischemic heart disease and development of tendon xanthomata were not common among these 40 patients

ABSTRACT

The study was conducted over 50 children, 2-8 years old [33 males and 17 females], 35 out of those children were suffering from secretory otitis media and constituted the study group, while the remaining 15 children were not suffering from otitis media and constituted the control group. Middle ear effusion [MEE] was examined cytologically, bacteriologically and for immune complexes to every patient. The detection of immune complexes, inflammatory cells, as well as bacteria in the MEEs in most of the patients group may explain that MEE can produce tissue damage resulting in permanent hearing loss

ABSTRACT

The present study was conducted to compare the bacteria of superficial tonsillar swabs with that of the deep core specimens of 50 children suffered from recurrent tonsillitis. The results reflect the polymicrobial aerobic and anaerobic nature not only the surface pathogens but also the deep core pathogens in children with recurrent tonsillitis. This is one of the explanations for failure of antibiotic therapy given according to culture and sensitivity test. It is recommended that, it is necessary to recognize those organisms when selecting the antibiotic therapy for children with recurrent tonsillitis

ABSTRACT

Fourty adult infertile Egyptian males with IDDM and free from another anomalies after hormonal and clinical examination were classified into 2 groups. Group 1, 25 cases with azoospermia, and group 2, 15 cases with oligospermia. Fourteen adult fertile normal males were control group. Antibodies against Mumps, Herpes simplex type II, C.M.V., Rubella HBV and HIVI were studied in all patients and control groups

ABSTRACT

This work included 24 male patients with bilharzial portal hypertension admitted to Al-Hussein University Hospital during the period from 1989 to 1992 for elective splenectomy and devascularization, and a control group of 8 healthy age matched males. Statistical analysis showed that the neutrophils were more active in portal blood than in systemic blood of patients most probably to enhance the defense mechanisms against gut organisms and their endotoxins. This difference was not found between systemic and portal blood of controls. Also, study of immunoglobulins showed a significantly elevated immunoglobulins A in portal blood in comparison with that in systemic blood which may be in response to bowel organisms
