ABSTRACT

Between 1993 to 1997, 19 patients with un-united femoral neck fractures were admitted to the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, Assiut University Hospital. They ranged from 18 to 45 years of age, average 32 years. All patients were treated by quadratus-femoris pedicle bone graft combined with internal fixation: cancellous screws in 18 patients and repositioning osteotomy plate in one patient. The outcome of this method of treatment was studied in 18 patients after exclusion of one patient who was lost to follow-up. The duration of follow-up ranged between 6 and 30 months [average 16 months]. At final follow-up union occurred in 14 patients [78%], late segmental collapse after union occurred in 2 patients, 11 patients were freely ambulatory and 3 used a cane. This technique improves the results of treatment of un-united femoral neck fractures by providing stable fixation and more rapid revascularization of the femoral head made
