ABSTRACT

Objective: To find out frequency of obesity in female University students in Faisalabad and to investigate its association with blood groups of ABO system

Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted with a sample size of 200 female University students, recruited from the Faisalabad based institutes from May 2017 to July 2017. Relevant information was taken by administering questionnaire. Height in meters and weight in kg were taken by stadiometer. BMI was calculated using formula BMI=weight in kg/height m2. Blood groups were determined by classic [antigen-antibody agglutination test].The data was analyzed through SPSS 20. Descriptive were presented as mean+/- SD and association of BMI with blood groups was assessed by regression analysis. P value

Results: Out of students, 192 attempted the questionnaire and participated in study [96% response rate], 30% of the 192 females were obese, distribution of ABO blood group showed 43%, followed by O, A and AB. 90% were Rh positive and 10% were Rh negative. Blood group O showed a trend towards obesity and blood group AB showed a trend towards lean body

Conclusion: The blood group O showed the significant positive association with obesity. Population with blood group O showed greatest susceptibility to be overweight and obese

ABSTRACT

The current study was done to pilot different techniques of making lectures interactive and to find out compliance of the students with interactive lectures. Prospective / comparative study. This study was carried out at the Department of Pharmacology, Aziz Fatima Medical and Dental College, Faisalabad from 01.04.2014 to 30.04.2014. An entire class of 3[rd] year MBBS students [n =F 65] was given interactive and the regular lectures for the Drugs acting on The Central nervous system in Pharmacology. Out of the total number of 12 lectures, alternative lectures were delivered in an interactive style. At the end of 12 lectures, students' opinion was obtained using a structured feedback evaluation questionnaire, having 5 statements on a 5 point Likert scale. 92% of the students found that interactive lectures are more effective. Notably more number of students agreed or strongly agreed that interactive lectures amplified alertness, developed interest, by-passed monotony, and urged them to learn by themselves as compared to usual lectures. The students preferred use of video-clips [65%],followed by each-one-teach-one. The use of interactive lectures to create interest among students is supported by the results of the study. An interactive lecture was more easily listened and considered to be more useful than the regular lecture by the students

ABSTRACT

Comparison of gamma glutamyltransferase in normal and type 2 diabetics. In a cross-sectional study, 100 apparently normal healthy subjects and, 47 type 2 diabetic subjects were selected from either sex with ages between 18-65 years.Subjects were measured for waist/hip ratio, BMI and serum levels of ALT, AST.Alk Phosphatase and Glutamyl Transferase [GGT]. The study excluded by screening for AntiHCV, HBsAg and patients with aspartate amino transferase [SGOT], alanine amino transferase [SGPT], GGT levels more than three times the normal and subject with a total leukocyte count more than 10,000/microl. The levels of GGT levels were found to be most significant among all the liver enzymes [P = 0.001]. The levels of GGT compared with type 2 diabetics was found to be significantly increased when compared with BMI, waist/circumference, cholesterol, triglycerides [TG], High Density Lipoprotein [HDL], Low density Lipoprotein [LDL], fasting blood sugar level and blood pressure [P = 0.001]. The pearson regression analysis showed a positive relation with systolic, diastolic blood pressure and fasting blood sugar. These results indicate that levels of GGT were raised with increased waist girth, BMI, blood pressure TG and low HDL, all of these are the features of metabolic syndrome according to ATP III criteria. Hence, serum GGT may be an important investigation for diabetes and metabolic syndrome
