ABSTRACT

Background: Exposure of Physicians to some stress factors during the occupational environmental work could induce some psychological problems. The first postgraduate years are particularly susceptible to these problems. In Arab countries, epidemiological data about psychological morbidity among medical undergraduate students are scarce. The Objective of the present study was to assess anxiety and depression levels among the third-year imam medical college students

Methods: A cross sectional study was done on the medical students of the 3rd year at Imam University; College of Medicine in Riyadh city on 2013. The sample consisted of 50 male medical students. The Higher Education Stress Inventory [HESI] was used in data collection

Results: Our results showed that 24% of the students were with minimal depression, 18% of students was with mild depression, 8% of student was with moderate depression, 2% of student was with moderately severe depression and none [0%] of student was reported with severe depression

Conclusion: The study indicated that medical students are extra sensitive to deal with the environmental occupational atmosphere which stress factors could prevail, so, depression and anxiety are common among medical students. Large, prospective, multicenter, multi-method studies are needed to identify personal and curricula features that influence stress, depression, anxiety and coping strategies among medical students. The study findings highlighted the need of psychiatric counseling and preventive mental health services to be an integral part of the routine clinical facilities caring for medical students

ABSTRACT

Background: Acute lower limb deep venous thrombosis [DVT] is a serious condition that could lead to venous thromboembolism [VTE]. Up to our knowledge, little is known about the risk factors for developing acute lower limb DVT in bedridden patients across Saudi Arabia. So we conducted this study aiming to determine the incidence and medical conditions that increase the risk for developing acute lower limb DVT in suspected cases of bedridden patients admitted in or referred to Radiology Department, King Abdul-Aziz University Hospital for lower limb Doppler ultrasound examination

Method: A cross sectional study of 83 patients admitted in or referred to KAU hospital during the year 2016 and underwent lower limb Doppler examination

Result: The reported incidence of lower limb DVT, after undergoing lower limb Doppler examination, in the suspected cases reviewed by Radiology Department, King Abdul-Aziz University Hospital in Jeddah was 13 [15.7%]. The cases of DVT was 76.9% women. Elderly was the highest risk factor of acute limb DVT as 53.8% were elderly patients, followed by diabetes 30.8%, hypertension 15.4% and cancer 7.7%, The effect of the studied risk factors on DVT was insignificant [P value >0.05]

Conclusion and recommendations: Lower Limb DVT has high prevalence [15.7%] in bedridden patients in Jeddah, KSA. Thrombophilia screening should be reserved for elderly, diabetics, hypertensive, and those with cancers or patients with other risk factors. Knowing the most common risk factors and their significance in developing DVT is essential for early detection of DVT to prevent the unwanted complications

ABSTRACT

Due to the high lactic acid levels and the contractility of the muscle soft-tissue hydatid disease is unusual even in endemic areas, and skeletal muscle involvement is extremely rare. Here we discuss an extremely unusual and rare case of hydatid disease found in the medial aspect of the soleus muscle in 46 years old female. MRI imaging is essential for identification and differential diagnosis
