ABSTRACT

A total of 23 solitary thyroid nodules were analyzed to test the validity of the nucleolar organizer regions [AgNORs] staining in discriminating between benign and malignant thyroid follicular lesions. Cases included 10 follicular adenomas, 3 atypical adenomas and 10 follicular carcinomas. The NORs count in follicular adenomas was significantly [P< 0.05] lower than that in atypical adenomas and follicular carcinomas. There was statistically significant difference in the NORs count between atypical adenomas and follicular carcinoma. It was concluded that nucleolar organizer regions staining is valid in differentiating benign from both atypical adenomatous and malignant follicular lesions

ABSTRACT

The effect of vitamins C and A upon the side effects produced by methansulfonate of aminoglycols [drug 864 T, NSC 140117] has been evaluated in experimental animals. The antitumor effect of 864 T, vitamin C and A and their combination were evaluated on Ehrlich ascites carcinoma cells inoculated in female Swiss albino mice. Tissue toxicity were assessed using histopathologic sections of liver and small intestine. Tumor inoculation alone produced marked hydropic degeneration of hepatocytes and marked necrosis of small intestinal villi. Drug 864 when used alone produced moderate protection against tumor side effects, while in combination with vitamin C, a marked protection was observed. Meanwhile, in the combination of vitamin A with drug 864 T a moderate protection against liver, and marked protection against intestinal side effects were seen

ABSTRACT

A study was made on 89 Egyptian patients with malignant lymphoma whose initial clinical presentation was at gastrointestinal tract. The case material was compiled during 1982-1986 from a consecutive pathology series examine at NCI, Cairo, and private pathology laboratories. Gastrointestinal lymphoma comprised 33.21% of the total extranodal lymphoma. The distribution was 40.44% in the stomach, 34.83% in small intestine and 24.71% in colon. Males predominated with a sex ratio of 3.9:1. The median age was 47.6 years for gastric lymphoma, 16.8 years for small intestinal lymphoma and 32.6 years for lymphoma of colon. Regional lymph nodes were involved in 44%. Histologically, all the cases were non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and were classified according the NCI sponsored "working formulation". In gastric lymphoma, the intermediate grade was the commonest type comprising 69.44%, in small intestinal lymphoma the high grade predominated [54.84%] and in lymphoma of colon, both intermediate and high grades were seen comprising 59.09% and 36.36%

ABSTRACT

Forty-five biopsies of nodal NHL were examined for EBV and CMV antigens [two members of the herpes virus group]. Paraffin embedded sections were used for indirect immunoperoxidase antibody staining using reference antisera to the two viruses, one was a human IgG anti EBV capsid antigen [EBVCA] and the other was a mouse monoclonal Ig anti CMV. Microscopic diagnosis was 30 non-Burkitt's lymphoma and 15 Burkitt's lymphoma, EVBCA and CMV antigens were detected in 2/15, 6/15 Burkitt's lymphoma respectively. Non-Burkitt's lymphoma were positive for EBVCA and CMV antigens in 3/30, 7/30 respectively. While, B lymphocytes support EBV replication the viral antigens are detected only when viral permissive replication occurs. Lack of detection of EBV antigens in 13/15 Burkitt's lymphoma is not against an etiological association with the virus. The stage of malignancy succeeds the initial viral infection and is a result of multitactors. Detection of CMV antigen in malignant lymphoma is a measure of immune suppression with reactivation of latent CMV virus. So far, there is no evidence that CMV is an etiological factor in lymphoma

ABSTRACT

The effect of Cyclophosphamide, Methotrexate and Fluorouracil [CMF] on the liver enzymes and liver histopathology was investigated in experimental mice. The drugs were administered on single drug bases and in combination in two schedules, one-day pulse and/or once every other day for 5 doses. The toxicity was measured by determination of serum liver enzymes [5-Nucleotidase, Alkaline phosphatase and glucose-6-phosphatase]. Histopathological examination of mice liver showed that the initial changes that were observed by one day pulse administration was stronger than that observed after repeated small doses. However, the rate of recovery was much rapid after single administration. Among the enzymes tested it seems that serum alkaline phosphatase was the most sensetive one that reflects the pathological changes of the liver

ABSTRACT

The effect of cyclophosphamide, Methotrexate and Fluorouracil [CMF] was investigated on intestinal enzymes [5-nucleotidase, Alkaline phosphatase and Glucose-6-phosphatase] as well as on the histopathology of intestinal mucosa of mice. The drugs were given either as single agent or in combination in two dose schedule, a one day puls therapy or once every other day for 5 doses. Intestinal 5-nucleotidase is the most significantly elevated enzyme and no sign of recovery was observed 10 days after [CMF] administration. Histopathology of mice intestine showed that the initial changes that were observed by repeated small doses were more severe than those observed after single pulse administration, recovery of which needs more than ten days

ABSTRACT

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma is a common soft tissue sarcoma characterised by mixed fibro-histiocytic cells and storiform pattern. Its frequency in Egypt to other soft tissue sarcomas has not been previously reported. A retrospective study was done on 70 cases of soft tissue sarcomas registered at the Department of Pathology, National Cancer Institute of Cairo University. The records as well as the pathologic material of this series were revised. Out of these 70 sarcomas, twelve showed the morphological, features of malignant fibrous histiocytoma; a relative frequency of 17.1. Ten cases were previously mistyped as fibrosarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma and other sarcomas. The tumors were located at the lower limb [8], retroperitoneum [3] and head and neck regions [1] .Their sizes varied from 1 cm. to 15 cm. The average patient's age was 50.6 years, and the male sex predominated [11: 1]. The management and prognosis of this recently recognised tumor is outlined
