ABSTRACT

Cardiovascular diseases [CVDs] represent major public health problem in many countries including Egypt. There are limited national data about morbidity and mortality of CVDs in Egypt. Purpose: was to evaluate the health behavior changes and health services regarding risk factors of CVDs for all age groups in Egypt through data base by Meta-analysis [Type 3]

Methods: data were collected from the available electronic national data base from available theses, medical and nursing reports, and published research relevant to CVDs from allover Egypt

Results: The total number of persons included in this project was 4110 cases from 104 medical, and 14 nursing studies, hospital and population based. The cardiovascular cases included 2906 males and 1204 females. These studies extended from 1995-2002. Most of studies were at Ain Shams, Cairo and Alexandria University hospitals, and the Ministry of Health and Population hospitals. The studies revealed that, CVDs were higher in the year 1997, among age group 40-60 years and in male group. Also, the study indicated a significant correlation between adverse life-style [increase serum lipids, hypertension, smoking, obesity and inactivity] and occurrence of CVDs. Although more than half of cases attended to the university hospitals for obtaining health services, two thirds of the cases did not receive follow-up services

Conclusion: According to this preliminary study concerning Egyptian data, CVDs are still a presentable problem. There is relative increase of prevalence of CVDs in the exception of the last two years

Recommendations: The study revealed 1] the importance of utilizing the available data from theses and other sources of data related to CVDs to build up an electronic database for these diseases and this procedure can be used similarly in other medical and nursing areas, 2] Governmental commitment is urgently required for the establishment of a national program for prevention and control of CVDs

ABSTRACT

Aim: This study aims to assess the establishment of nursing students' competency to act at a disaster site

Subjects and Methods: This study was conducted at the secondary schools of nursing affiliated to Ain Shams University, Banha University and El Mataria Teaching Hospital

Sample: A convenient sample composed of 120 students [3[rd] grade], from the a fore mentioned settings, then a systemic random sample was selected from the total sample of each setting to be evaluated in clinical setting [n = 40]

Tools: Self-administered questionnaire [pre- post-assessment]. 2] An observation checklist [pre- post-assessment], 3] A videotape for disaster drill and 4] Drill evaluation checklist [pre- post- assessment]

Results: Revealed a marked lack of knowledge and practice level among the study sample. Also, a statistical significant difference was found between them pre and post training regarding their knowledge and practice in relation to disaster nursing and related emergency skills. Mean scores reduced for the students' practice in clinical setting than in lab

Conclusion: Establishment of nursing students' competency through training intervention was helpful for them to act at a disaster site

Recommendations: There is a need for continuous training on disaster nursing and concepts of disaster must be included in undergraduate curricula of nursing students

ABSTRACT

Aim: The study aimed to examine the effect of exercise as alternative therapy for gestational diabetes [GD]

Setting: The study was conducted at the outpatient clinic of Ain Shams Maternity University Hospital [antenatal clinic], and two maternal and child health centers [MCH] at Abbasia and El-Demerdash Zone. Sixty pregnant women were recruited in the study, they were chosen according to special criteria

Sample: The study sample was classified into two groups: mild and moderate exercise groups

Tools: Five tools were used to collect the necessary data: 1] A structured interviewing questionnaire to collect data related to socio-demographic characteristics and anthropometric measurement, 2] Laboratory investigation record, 3] Exercise record, 4] Diet record, and 5] Maternal and fetal condition records

Results: The study revealed that degree of satisfaction with exercise practice was slightly higher in mild than moderate exercise. Both blood glucose and urine levels, and overweight reduced gradually to normal degree among both mild and moderate exercise groups, but the mean score reduction was higher in the moderate than the mild exercise group. Regarding maternal and neonatal outcome, there were no statistically significant differences between mild and moderate exercise groups but the improvement was more in moderate exercise than mild exercise group

Recommendations: Counseling for pregnant women, a daily safe exercise program is an important part of healthy pregnancy. For women with gestational diabetes, exercise is especially important to reduce complications. Maintaining regular follow-up visits for pregnant women is important for early detection of weight gain, which is very important in preventing high blood sugar levels
