ABSTRACT

Epilepsy is the most common neurological disorder in childhood Mothers of children with a chronic condition such as epilepsy have to cope with the burden of daily related to the illness and the constant adjustment to the changing demands of the chronic condition. to assess coping patterns of mothers of children with epilepsy through: Assessing mother's awareness and practice regarding childhood epilepsy, and detecting mother's coping patterns toward their children with epilepsy. A descriptive research design was utilized in this study, the convenience sample consisted of 120 epileptic children and their accompanying mothers recruited from the epileptic outpatient Clinic and the neurological pediatric out patient clinic affiliated to Ain Shams University hospital. Data were collected using questionnaire regarding knowledge and practice about childhood epilepsy, and coping scale to assess maternal coping toward their epileptic children. The mean age of the mothers' was 34.341 +/- 5.850 years. 71.7% of them had poor knowledge, 59.2% not done practice related to epilepsy disease. A statistically significant correlation was found between problems-oriented coping used by mother of epileptic children and her knowledge [P= 0.000], and practice toward childhood epilepsy [P=. 0.005]. The majority of the studied mothers were having poor knowledge and practice related to their epileptic children, particularly in regard to types of epilepsy and first aid management of acute seizures. Three fifth of them tended to cope by always using emotional oriented coping. Further researches are needed to determine the barriers that affect negatively the mothers of epileptic children coping patterns with their affected children. Conduct Continuous various educational programs for the mothers of epileptic children, based on needs assessment to raise their awareness regarding epilepsy

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of vision problems on health status of primary school children. The sample included 250 primary school children at primary schools and ophthalmic clinic affiliated to students health insurance in El-Khosous district. Their age ranged between 9-12 years. For data collection, four tools were used: the first tool was an interviewing questionnaire for assessing the socio-demographic characteristic of the primary school children, their medical history, Parent's awareness about health needs and problems of primary school children, the dangerous effect of vision problems on health status and scholastic achievement of their children and Assessment sheet for life style, e.g., [nutritional habits, hygiene, sleep].Second tool was Physical assessment sheet for Monitoring growth and development, Physical observation from head to toes for child.. Third tool was medical record review.. Fourth tool was an observational check list for learning environment at school. The study reflected that more than half [58.4%]of the studied sample had poor vision. There were no statistically association between the vision problem and children' scholastic achievement, there is a significant statistically association between the children' life style and the vision problem occurrence. This study recommended the needs to increase public and family awareness through mass media to provide more explanations about vision problems and their effects on health status of the children

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to identify the high risk factors for depression among pregnant women and to detect the postpartum depression among those with high risk factors. The sample consisted of 882 Egyptian women registering for antenatal clinics at the Health Center and the University Hospital. Forty-two mothers were lost for follow up for various reasons and the remaining number of the mothers consented to complete the tools for data collection. A structured interview questionnaire sheet for personal and medical information, life event stress sheet to detect the different levels of stress and an Arabic version of the Beck Depression Inventory to assess postpartum depression were used for data collection. The findings revealed that 620 mothers had risk factors for developing postpartum depression. The prevalence of postpartum depression among mothers with risk factors was 11.1, also some risk factors were found out to make the mothers more exposed to the postpartum depression. From these factors, life event stress, history of depression, low income level and medical serious diseases
