ABSTRACT

In the last years, it has been observed an increasing interest for the evaluation and treatment of the patient with facial pain, specially that one related to thetemporomandibular joint ar the dysfunctions of this. The great majority of the researchers and clinicians agree that multiple factors are involved in the problematic of the articulardysfunction, and its accurate mechanisms are unknown, being necessary greater studies. lt's known that there are some determinants for the starting process of the dysfunction andarticular pain, being them, the traumas, the biomechanics disadvantages, hormonal, the psychological ar psychosocial factors, favorable parafunctions, overloads and metabolicstates, among others. Meanwhile, there are controversies about the importance of each factor in potential. The objective of this work was to verify the prevalence of patients with dentofacial deformity who had presented articular dysfunction and/or myofascial pains, as wellas establishing the types of malocclusion that present a bigger index of this pathology. Inside of the experimental conditions of this study, it was possible to conclude that the prevalenceof articular and myofascial sintomatology associated with the dentofacial deformity was high (82.7%), and the painful symptomatology presented similar frequencies inside the sample.
