ABSTRACT

Background and Aim: Animal solid lipids contain considerable saturated and trans acids fats which are the risk factors for lipidemia and as a result, predispose men to cardiovascular diseases. Thus, the present study aimed at determining the fatty acid profiles of tallow and meat of the cattle in different places of South Khorasan Province and assessing their decisive effects on the occurrence of cadovascular diseases

Materials and Methods: In this descriptive-analytical study. 5 samples of meat and tallow from the cattles' abattoirs in Birjand, Boshroyeh, Ferdows, Ghaen, and Nehbandan cities [i.e. from50 samples of 25 oxen.] were gatheredd and frozen. The samples were frozen at -80oc. Then, the fats were separated from the samples, hydolized, and methylated. Then, the type and percent of each fatty acid were designated taking their respective retention time and standard peak into account. Atherogenesity and thrombogenisity features of the samples were accounted based on the fatty acid profile. Finally, statistical analysis of the obtained data was done by SAS software

Results: Analysis of the gathered data revealed that the levels of saturated fatty acids were not differet between meat and tallow except for stearic acid. The percent of this acid was 18.2% higher in tallow in comparison with meat. The higher amount of monounsaturated fatty acid was observed in the meat than tallow [p<0.05]. The amount of polyunsaturated fatty acid, omega-6, and omega-3 fatty acids did not differ between meat and tallow. The percent of trans-fatty acid was lower in meat than in tallow [p<0.05]. The hypocholesterolemic fatty acid was higher in the meat

Conclusion: It was found that the sum of trans and stearic fatty acids was more in tallow. The hypocholesterolemic fatty acids levels were higher in the meat in the whole province. The cattle's meat had lower atherogenetic and thrombogenetic properties compared with the animals' fat. The consumed cattle's meat and fat in the province appear to have a proper condition

ABSTRACT

Background and Aim: Efficiency of blood request and transfusion, if purposeful, can prevent wasting of blood in hospital wards and as a result, decrease overload on the blood bank and spare various expenses. The aim of the present descriptive study was to assess the efficiency of blood utilization in Vali-Asr educational hospital in Birjand in order to take an effective step to make medical centers aware of the coordination required between blood need and blood request

Materials and Methods: In this descriptive and cross-sectional study. Blood requests in 16 wards of a hemovigilance based hospital program over the first 4-months of 2013 were included. The cross-match transfusion ratio [C/T], the transfusion index [TI], and transfusion probability [T%] were calculated

Results: Out of 2201 cross-matched blood units only 1394 units were transfused into 624 patients. C/T T% and TI were <2.5, >50% and >0.5 respectively. The most C/T was in the maternity ward and the least belonged to ENT ward. In both of these wards C/T and TI were more than normal

Results: In total for 1617 patients ordered blood with the mean age of 41.55 +/- 23/94 years. Out of 2201 cross-matched blood units only 1394 units were transfused for 624 patients. The overall C/T ration, TI index and T% were 1.5, 1.3, and 60.1% respectively

Conclusion: The overall C/T ratio and TI index obtained in this study are considered to be optimal compared with the standard figures of C/T< 2.5 and TI>5. However, blood utilization model in some wards like gynaecology was not appropriate, indicating a more effective guideline for blood order

ABSTRACT

Background and Aim: Internet is one of the most advanced new communication means. Despite the positive uses of it, occurrence of excessive behaviors and detrimental effects of internet addiction particularly in adolescents has attracted everyone's regard. Thus, the aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of this problem among Birjand intermediate school students and its relationship with their anxiety, stress, and depression

Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted in 2014 on 400 male and female intermediate students of Birjand who were selected through cluster sampling. In addition to employing a demographic variables questionnaire, other data collection was carried out using Young's Internet addiction test and DASS-21 stress, anxiety, and depression scale questionnaire. Then, the final obtained data was analyzed using SPSS software [V:18] and a= 0.05 was taken as the significant level

Results: It was found that 73.8% of the students were normal users, 20.5% had low addiction and 5.7% had a severe addiction to internet. The findings showed that the mean scores of stress, anxiety, and depression in students addicted to internet were significantly higher than normal users' [P<0.001]

Conclusion: Results indicated a high prevalence of internet addiction in the students and had significant relationships with anxiety, stress, and depression. This is something that necessitates interventions aiming at preventing various harms to them
