This series comprises 191 victims injured by antipersonnel land mines in the North-east of Sri Lanka. The pattern of mine injuries is described and the injuries to the lower limb are classified according to the level of injury. Injuries to the lower limb were the commonest and over 73% required a below knee amputation. Recommendations are made for the improved care of these victims. The socio-economic effects of mines experienced by other countries affected by internal conflicts are described. The preventive measures that could be taken to avert such a situation in Sri Lanka are stressed.

This series comprises 527 missile victims of armed combat managed at Base Hospital, Polonnaruwa (BHP) during a five year period commencing January 1984. The injuries were multiple and involved many regions of the body. The results are compared with recent reports from other countries with similar conflicts. The inadequacy of first aid and the lack of organised transport for the victims are emphasised with suggestions to improve the care of such patients.

A series of 30 incisional hernia repairs with knitted monofilament polypropylene is presented. The recurrence rate was 3.3% (one patient). No patch has sloughed or required removal. There was one postoperative death. Synthetic mesh allows defects of any size to be repaired without tension with a low recurrence rate.
