ABSTRACT

Ma hipertension es la enfermedad cronica mas comun de los adultos del área del Caribe, ya que afecta a cerca del 22 por ciento de la poblacion. A los efectos de lograr un mayor conocimiento de las caracteristicas prevalecientes de la hipertension en los residentes negros de la zona, se llevo a cabo un estudio prospectivo de todos los sujetos hipertensos negros admitidos a las salas médicas del Hospital Universitario de las Indias Occidentales ubicadas en Kingston, Jamaica, durante 1980 y 1981. Se incluyo en el estudio un total de 149 hombres y 137 mujeres que satisfacian los criterios de hipertension determinados para la investigación. De esos 286 pacientes, el 90,2 por ciento tenia hipertension esencial, el 9,1 por ciento mostraba pruebas de insuficiencia renal subyacente, el 0,3 por ciento (un paciente) tenia el sindrome de Conn. Las complicaciones mas frecuentes observadas en el momento de la hospitalizacion fueron cardiomegalia (en el 62,9 por ciento de los sujetos), deterioro renal (en el 48,6 por ciento), insuficiencia cardiaca (en el 35,3 por ciento) y accidente cerebrovascular (en el 27,3 por ciento). En el 16,4 por ciento de los pacientes se diagnostico infarto del miocardio...
