ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo explore the effects of after-school tutoring for school-age children on their emotions and behaviors, and to provide a basis for developing after-school tutoring and psychological support strategies for school-age children. MethodsFour elementary schools in a district of Shanghai were selected by simple random sampling method. Whole group sampling was conducted by class, and parents of students were surveyed by general questionnaire and the scale of strengths and difficulties. Information was collected on the basic conditions of children and families and the results were compared and analyzed. ResultsThis study showed that 88.26% of children attended extracurricular classes, of which 26.16% attended 3 or more classes, 42.5% attended cultural classes, 28.3% attended sports classes, and 59.8% attended art classes. Children who did not attend classes had higher pro-social scores. Children who attended reading class had lower scores for emotional problems that was a protective factor for emotional problems. Children who chose extracurricular programs in sports and reading also had lower overall scores for difficulties. Excessive use of electronic devices by school-age children on weekdays or weekends had a negative effect on emotional and conduct problem scores regardless of whether they chose extracurricular programs. It appeared that the choice of cultural programs, art programs and different levels of exercise intensity had no effect on children's emotions and behaviors. ConclusionFor children with low pro-social level, extracurricular classes should be carefully selected. For extracurricular classes, more reading and sports-related courses can be considered, which have positive effects on school-age children’s emotions and behaviors. Regardless of the choice of extracurricular classes, try to avoid excessive online classes.

ABSTRACT

Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair has been widely used in adult inguinal hernia. The spermatic cord,as an important reproductive organ in male patients, should be deperitonealized to avoid injury in order to prevent fertility from being affected. However in female patients, the uterine round ligament not the spermatic cord goes across the inguinal canal, which extends from intraperitoneal and extraperitoneal, banding tightly with the peritoneum. It is difficult to completely strip the uterus round ligament from peritoneum to achieve deperitonealization.Hence there is still controversy about how to handle the uterus round ligament. There is no uniform guidance document for the handling of the uterus round ligament in laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair around the world.Handling methods are investigated in this article based on the summary of related literatures.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To investigate the current bedtime routine among Chinese children less than 3 years of age and explore its dose-dependent association with sleep duration and sleep quality.@*Method@#Healthy full-term born children aged 0-35 months were selected by stratified cluster random sampling method from 8 provinces in China following the "Hospital of Province-City-County" sampling technical route during 2012-2013.Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire(BISQ) was used to assess sleep conditions of these children.Children′s personal and family information was obtained by Shanghai Children′s Medical Center Socio-demographic Questionnaire. Both of these questionnaires were filled in by parents. The effects of bedtime routine on children′s sleep duration and quality were analyzed by multivariate analysis of variance.@*Result@#The children′s average age was(12±10) months(n=1 304), of whom 689 were males (52.8%, 689/1 304). There were 48.5%(632/1 304)of the parents reported that their children had not established regular sleep routines. There was a consistent dose-dependent association between bedtime routine and sleep duration, as well as other indicators for sleep quality (all P<0.05). The more regular the sleep routines, the longer the sleep duration, the earlier the children went to sleep, the shorter the sleep onset latency, the fewer the nighttime wakeup and the shorter the nighttime waking. The nighttime sleep duration was significantly longer for those with a bedtime routine 'every night’ than those who 'never’ had a bedtime routine (9.5(95%CI: 9.4-9.6)vs. 8.9(95%CI: 8.6-9.3)h, t=3.345, P=0.001). Compared with children who never had bedtime routines, children with regular bedtime routines had fewer night wakeup (1.3(95%CI: 1.2-1.4) vs. 2.4( 95%CI: 2.0-2.9), t=3.182, P=0.001) and shorter night waking duration(16.6(95%CI: 14.6-18.8) vs. 59.2 (95%CI: 47.0-72.7)min, t=6.383, P<0.01).@*Conclusion@#The percentage of children who have established regular bedtime routine is low in China. There is significant dose-dependent association between regular bedtime routine and sleep outcomes, especially sleep quality. The more regular the sleep routines, the better the sleep quality.

ABSTRACT

Objective To assess the influence of community intervention on blood pressure and quality of life in aged patients with hypertension. Methods A total of 378 elderly hypertensive patients received community intervention with anti-high blood pressure agents for one year. Before and after intervention, blood pressure was recorded and genetic quality of life inventory(GQOLI-74),symptom checklist(SCL-90),self-rating anxiety scale(SAS),and self-rating depression scale(SDS)were carried out on the basis of giving unite guiding words. Results In addition to blood pressure degraded, the blood pressure control rate was improved after intervention(67.7% vs.40.1% before intervention,x2=57.59, P<0.05).Observation items of body health dimension, psychological health dimension, social function dimension were better than those recorded before intervention(P<0.05).But difference of the material life dimension was not statistically significant(P>0.05).With 41 scores as a SDS rude mark to judge the depression incidence.the incidence was decreased from 22.7% before intervention to 12.5%after intervention(x2=12.565,P<0.05).Conclusions Community intervention is a practical and valuable strategy for controlling high blood pressure and improving quality of life in aged patients.
