ABSTRACT

Safety signs provide information as well as instructions concerning the hazard or dangers in the workplace. The correct comprehension of these signs is very important for doing the necessary feedback in the specific situation which they are described. In this cross sectional study, the comprehension of 10 selected safety signs were investigated in 53 randomly selected employees of an industrial company in Shiraz. The comprehension test was carried out by aid a standard questionnaire obtained from ISO 9186-1:2007. In this study the mean comprehension scores of the tested signs was 65.95 percent with standard deviation if 28.7. The highest and lowest comprehension scores were for "use hearing protectors" and "biological hazard" respectively. The comprehension of 40 percent of tested safety signs was lower than the minimum acceptable values of ISO 3864 and ANSI Z535.3 standards. This study showed that there is a significant difference in comprehensions of tested safety signs. For full comprehension of safety signs it is necessary to train the employees or adding supplementary text to the symbols in some cases

ABSTRACT

To evaluate intermediate-term results of Baerveldt tube implantation for treatment of refractory glaucoma in young patients. We retrospectively studied 14 eyes of 11 consecutive patients aged<20 years with refractory glaucoma who underwent Baerveldt tube implantation after 1 to 3 previous surgical procedures. The glaucoma was congenital in eight eyes and following congenital cataract surgery in four eyes, deep vitrectomy in one eye and post-traumatic in one eye. This study included seven male and four female subjects with mean age of 8.6 +/- 6.3 [range 2-20] years. Mean follow up period was 38 +/- 0.9 months [range 1-4 years]. Mean intraocular pressure [IOP] was 35 +/- 11 mmHg preoperatively which decreased to 16.5 +/- 4.7 mmHg postoperatively [P=0.001]. IOP of 5 to 21 mmHg was achieved in six eyes [42.9%] without antiglaucoma medication and in 12 eyes [85.7%] with or without medication. No loss of light perception or phthisis bulbi occurred during the follow up period. Postoperative interventions included shortening of the tube in one eye [7%], iridectomy at the site of tube due to occlusion by iris in one eye and lens aspiration+PCIOL two years after tube implantation in one eye. Our results show that Baerveldt tube implantation is an effective and safe method for IOP control in young patients with refractory glaucoma

ABSTRACT

Guttate psoriasis is a disease characterized by round to oval shaped lesions with silvery or gray scales on an erythematous base and several millimeters to one centimeter in diameter, Its lesions are generalized, discrete, and distributed predominantly on the trunk and proximal extremities and occasionally on face, ears, scalp and rarely on palms and soles. The disease is predominantly seen in children and young adults. It seems that focal Streptococcal infections have an effective role in the development of disease. This study was performed in order to determine the relationship between Streptococcal infections and A.S.O liter prior to treatment. In 17 patients, throat culture was taken and in all of patients the history of upper respiratory tract infection was taken. Period of illness, sex and age of the patients were recorded and the data were analyzed. Over the course of 2 years, 22 patients with guttate psoriasis were selected. Biopsies were taken from all and A.S.O titre prior to treatment. In 17 patients, throat culture was done and in all of patients the history of upper respiratory tract infection was taken. Period of illness, sex and age of the patients were recorderd and the data were analyzed. Fourteen out of 22 cases [63.63%] had an A.S.O titer equal to grater than 250 TODD units prior to treatment. Eleven cases [50%] had a history of upper respiratory tract infection two weeks before illness. It seems that Streptococcal infections play an effective role in the development of disease. It is necessary that throat culture and A.S.O titer be checked in these patients there fore, proper antibiotic can be prescribed
