ABSTRACT

Introduction: patient education is an essential strategy in disease control that reduces complications in patient with chronic diseases. Today, most of the education and information presented in health care systems are at a higher level and are not an appropriate method for people to understand. This study aimed to examine the impact of two of the above methods on respiratory self-efficacy among people with COPD

Method: this study is a quasi-experimental clinical trial that performed in 2012 on 75 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease attending Masihe - Daneshvary and Emam Hosien hospitals in Tehran, Iran. We used purposive sampling method and the participants in the study were divided into three random categories [face to face, educational booklet, and control groups]. The two groups of subjects were presented with identical content but different training methods. The control group received the routine instruction in the ward. Data analysis was performed using descriptive and inferential statistics

Results: the results showed homogeneity at demographic data in three groups of study. Comparison of demographic and mean respiratory self-efficacy in the baseline between three study groups showed no significant difference. But the mean of respiratory self-efficacy in the past revealed a significant difference between face to face educational group and control groups [P<0.001]. The test showed no significant difference between educational booklet group and control group [P>0.05]

Conclusion: among people with COPD, face to face educational strategies increased respiratory self-efficacy more than booklet educational method. Consequently, nurses as care providers in patients with COPD can have a valuable role in patient education using face to face education method

ABSTRACT

Although drug treatment for hypertension is available, but just 30% hypertensive patients have controlled hypertension. Nowadays non adherence to recommended health regimen is accepted as a nursing diagnosis by American Nurses Association. The aim of this study was to determine correlation between self-concept [according to Roy Adaptation Model] and adherence to therapeutic health regimen in hypertensive outpatients who attended to one of hospitals affiliated to Uremia University of Medical Sciences and health Services. In this descriptive-correlational study, 120 hypertensive outpatients, who had inclusion criteria, were selected by quota purposive sampling method. Data were collected by a demographic and disease related questionnaire, "Self-Concept Questionnaire in Heart Disease Patients based on [RAM]" and "Hill-Bone Compliance to High Blood Pressure Therapy Scale". Validity and reliability of questionnaires were assessed with content validity and Cronbach's Alpha coefficient. Cronbach's alpha coefficients of "Hill-Bone Compliance to High Blood Pressure Therapy Scale" and threat and challenge perception "Self-Concept Questionnaire in Heart Disease Patients based on [RAM] were calculated 0.71, 0.87, 0.90 respectively. the questionnaires were completed by interview and data were analyzed by SPSS 16. Findings showed that adherence to recommended health regimen had significant negative relationship to total threat perception with perception of threat of self-concept [P<0.001]. Also, Adherence to recommended health regimen had a positive significant relationship with total challenge perception. Similarly, perception of challenge for body sensation, self consistency, self ideal [P<0.001] with self ethical-spiritual of self concept [P=0.027] had a positive significant correlation. According to the correlation between adherence with threat or challenge perception for dimensions of self concept in this study, nurses need to identify methods that cause patients perceive stimuli as a challenge to self-concept. As it guides person to problem solving ways that should be overcame stressful stimuli and leads to integrated adaptation

ABSTRACT

Appropriate nursing care for patients illustrates the quality of nursing practice in the society. In this study the knowledge, attitude and practice of senior nursing students and graduates of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciencess [SBMU] were compared. 54 nurses with a 4-6 years experience of nursing in the medical or surgical wards were selected through goal oriented sampling. 54 senior nursing students were randomly selected. Initial data was gathered using 4 questionnaires dealing with: knowledge, attitude, practice, and patients' and head nurses' opinion about the participants. Mean score [ +/- standard deviation] of knowledge was 63.7 +/- 3.2 and 45.3 +/- 2.1 in nurses and students, respectively [p < 0.005]. Positive attitude was recorded in 52% of participants. Patient evaluation of nursing students and graduates did not differ in the two groups, but the head nurses gave higher scores to the graduates [56.2 +/- 4.0] than to the students [53.4 +/- 6.0] [p < 0.002]. Results revealed that both nursing students and graduates possess ample knowledge and most have a positive attitude. Patients were satisfied with the performance of both groups
