ABSTRACT
Fourty three patients were treated with fifty three PFC[TM] cementless total hip prostheses. The mean age of the patients was 51.9 years [range 38-64]. The minimum follow-up was three years, with a mean of 44 months [range 36-60]. The mean preoperative Harris hip score was 38.2 points and improved at the last follow-up evaluation to 89 points. A good or excellent result was achieved in 87% of hips. At one year follow-up four patients [7.5%] had mild thigh pain, which persisted at three years in two patients [3.8%]. There was no correlation between the degree of press fit and the thigh pain or the clinical results. At three years, 20 hips [37.7%] showed radiodense lines in zones 3 and 5. These radiodense lines were not associated with thigh pain except in one patient. This study shows that thigh pain after cementless total hip replacement is less common when a less stiff stem is used
