ABSTRACT

Asthma is a common pulmonary disease in children that was associated with reversible hypersensitivity of pulmonary airways. It introduces as a psychosomatic disorder with interrelated different psychic and somatic domains which can exacerbate each other. It has been documented that for the effective management of this disease both medical and psychological considerations are crucial. In this regard, we aimed at evaluating psychiatric symptoms in the mothers who have uncontrolled asthmatic children. This is a case-control study that was done on 50 mothers of uncontrolled asthmatic children and 50 mothers of healthy children. Considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a method of simple non- probability sampling was adopted to evaluate each of the cases for psychiatric symptoms, using SCL-90-R. SCL-90-R is a standard tool that is used for evaluating nine psychopathological elements, including psychosis, paranoid ideation, phobia, hostility, anxiety, depression, interpersonal sensitivity, obsessive and compulsion symptoms and somatizations. It shows the existence and severity of the psychiatric symptoms occurring for one past week. Two groups of participants were evaluated and matched based on some intrusive elements. There was not any significant difference between the two groups of study in terms of children's and mothers' age, birth age, number of children in the family, job, parents' education and their marital status, argument in the family, physical or mental diseases, smoking and addiction in the family. However, it was found that the mean scores of depression, somatizations, psychosis, anxiety, obsession, interpersonal sensitivity and phobia were significantly higher in the asthmatic group. Moreover, mean global severity index was significantly higher in the asthmatic group. Further, as the findings suggest, the odd ratio for serious psychiatric symptoms in the mothers with asthmatic children was 2 while it was calculated as 2.54 for any other psychiatric symptoms. Due to the fact that psychiatric aspects are prominent among both children suffering from asthma and their family, we suggest that psychiatrists cooperate in managing asthma. We believe that the psychotherapy of asthmatic children's family would be an effective way for better management of the disease as well as helping to improve mental health in the society

ABSTRACT

Chronic low back pain is a complex condition produced by multiple factors. There are small researches about the frequency of Psychiatric disorders in discal hernia in Iran. This study investigated the psychological aspects of low back pain in a group of patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate the frequency level of psychiatric symptoms in patients with discal hernia. This research is a descriptive and cross sectional study. The psychological aspects were evaluated by using the Persian version of symptoms checklist-90-Revised [SCL-90-R]. The evaluation was carried out on 40-patients in the neurosurgery wards of the hospitals related to Islamic Azad University of Mashhad. The patients were diagnosed as suffering from lumbar discal herniation. Most of the patients were complaining about severe and chronic pains. The global index of the illness in our research was 1.09 and the most common disorders were found to be paranoid ideation and depression. The relation between pain severity and most common scores of the subscales of SCL-90-R is assessed. it showed higher association of paranoid ideation with 3, 4-5, 7-9, 10 level of pain and obsession and compulsion with score of 6. Patients had higher scores in all scales of the SCL-90-R. This research showed that the frequency of psychiatric symptoms in patients with lumbar discal herniation and low back pain is more than the general population of Iran

ABSTRACT

Depression is a serious and prevalent disorder known with persistent pathology of mood as the main symptom. Lifetime prevalence of depression is up to 25 percent. In different studies depression symptoms pattern of patients is reported different by sex, age, season and place and '. For this reason in this study we evaluate the differences of depression symptoms pattern by season. In a prospective descriptive study all of the patients that come to psychiatric clinic of Imam-Reza Hospital in winter of 1382 and summer of 1383 with chief Complaint of depression and were entered to the study all of the patients visited by a psychiatrist and for all of them we were filled both demographic information questionnaire and Beck Depression Inventory [BDI]. Data From different items of depression based on BDI were compared in two groups of winter and summer with 15 percent sensitivity. 101 patients with mean age of 28.94 years enter to the study; mean score of BDI was 27.64 with standard deviation of 12.43. There was no meaningful difference between severity of depression among two groups of winter and summer although items of preoccupation with body and somatic health meaningfully were in winter then in summer [P=0.03]. Total score of BDI in male and female patients were not different meaningfully [without relation to the season], but items of difficulty in beginning of the work [P=0.008] and diminished sexual desire [P=0.018] were meaningfully upper in men than in women. Mean of total score of depression in rural patients were meaningfully upper than urban patients too [P=0.025]. In this study there was no difference between depression symptoms patterns of patients by sex and season

ABSTRACT

Infertility is a common problem which about 15-20% of couples in their fertility life suffer form it. Though the role of psychological problems as etiologic factors for infertility is in doubt but psychogenic variables and life-style absolutely play important role in infertility, on the other hand infertility itself can cause different psychological reactions like depression in individual. Therefore researchers decided to evaluate the prevalence of psychosexual disorders and the rate of depression in fertile couples and determine its correlation with infertility. Research was across sectional study and was done during one month. 30 infertile women were selected randomized among infertile couples who were admitted in Mashhad Infertility Treatment Center [Montaserieh Hospital]. These persons filled Global Sexual Functioning scale [GSF] and Hamiltion's rating scale for depression and answered a questionnaire which included information such as: age, education, job, duration of marriage and infertility treatment. According to Hamilton scale, 7 persons [%23/3] had mild depression, 16 persons [%53/3] had moderate depression, 6 persons [%20] were deeply depressed and only one person had normal mood. On the other hand sexual dysfunction were more common in couples with higher age difference. There was no correlation between age mean difference of the couples and sever and moderat depression [t=1.7, r=-0.306], but it was correlated with duration of infertility treatment [t=-2.59, r=-0.44, P<0.05], this shows the importance of more psychological attention at early stages of infertility diagnosis. There is no correlation between depression and sexual dysfunction [r=0.028] which shows sexual dysfunction in infertile couples are independent from depression
