ABSTRACT

Cuffed central venous catheters [CCVC]. as preferred types of vascular access for hemodialysis have several complications [e.g. infection, thrombosis, embolism, bleeding and fractures]. This study aimed to describe the complications of CCVC. In this cross-sectional study, the incidence of complications associated with CCVC in patients referred to Kashan Akhavan dialysis center was evaluated during a six-month period between June 2013 to December 2013. The census sampling method was used and patients in each dialysis session were evaluated for all catheter-related complications using the checklist. Finally, a nephrologist approved the complications. From a total of 183 patients admitted to the Kashan Akhavan dialysis center during the six months, 43 patients were enrolled with permanent hemodialysis catheters. Catheter-related infection and thrombosis were common complications. The incidence rates of catheter-related infection and thrombosis were 1.87 and 1.5 per 1,000 daily catheter use, respectively. Catheter-related infection and thrombosis are two common complications among hemodialysis patients used a CCVC. Therefore, the necessary measures should be taken to reduce these complications

ABSTRACT

Falls in the elderly cause a variety of injuries and may lead to dependency, lower self-efficacy, depression, limitation in daily activities, hospitalization, admission to a nursing home and cost to the individual and community. The present study was conducted to determine the types of injuries from falls in the elderly. In this cross-sectional study, all patients aged 60 years and older who were hospitalized due to fall in Shahid Beheshti Hospital in 2011 were investigated. External cause codes w00-w19 based on International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems [ICD-10] related to fall were selected from the hospital health information system, and the patient records, demographic variables, external causes of injury and type of injury were extracted. Data were analyzed using SPSS software. Relationship between duration of hospitalization and background variables were evaluated using chi-square test, t-test, ANOVA or nonparametric equivalents. A significance level of 0.05 was considered. A total of 251 patients aged 60 years and older were studied that 127 of them [50.6%] were women. The mean age of the patients was 76.82 +/- 7.3 years. Fall on the ground was the most common type of injury [78%] and upper limb fractures [44.1%], lower limb fractures [28.9%] and head injuries [15.9%] were the most common types of injuries. The total number of hospitalization days was 1425 and mean of hospitalization was 5.68 +/- 4.5 days. The most frequent injuries are fractures of the upper limb, lower limbs and head injuries that caused the greatest length of stay and cost of hospitalization in the elderly

ABSTRACT

Musculoskeletal disorders are the most common and costly occupational injuries. Musculoskeletal disorders represent a significant occupational problem among nurses. The aim of current study was to determine behavioral factors related to musculoskeletal disorders among nurses by using the theory of planned behavior. A cross-sectional study was carried out among nurses in hospitals of Qom University of Medical Sciences in 2011. A total number of 264 registered nurses with working experience at least one year, and different shifts were included in the study. A reliable and valid questionnaire based on the theory of planned behavior and Nordic was used for data gathering. Data were analyzed using statistical software SPSS for windows V. 16 Independent t-test, chi-square, Mann - Whitney and Pearson correlation tests were used for testing the correlations among variables. The study showed that 47. 5% of nurses in the past 12 months and 36. 2% during the past 7 days have suffered from musculoskeletal disorders. The most work-related disorders were in the low back and neck. Also statistically significant difference was found between the mean scores of the constructs of attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control and behavioral intention in nurses with and without musculoskeletal disorders. Musculoskeletal disorder rate still is high in nurses and attention and action is needed to improve nurses' health. Theory of planned behavior is effective at identifying behavioral and attitudinal factors related to the correct ergonomic principles in the through working position

ABSTRACT

Burnout syndrome as a serious occupational disorder has recently been focused by researchers. Three main dimensions of burnout syndrome are emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment. This syndrome leads to physiological and psychological stresses and diminishes the staff interest and work efficiency. This study was designed to assess the correlation between burnout syndrome dimensions and demographic characteristics of cashiers in state banks of Kashan in 2010. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 156 cashiers in sate banks of Kashan. Frequency and severity of burnout syndrome were evaluated using Maslach burnout inventory [MBI]. Demographic characteristics of subjects were collected through a specific questionnaire. Data were analyzed using chi-square test. In frequency twenty-seven [17.3%] and in severity 12 [7.7%] of subjects showed the most emotional exhaustion. The most reduced personal accomplishment was in frequency in 24 [15.4%] and in severity in 27 [17.3%] participants. Also the most depersonalization was in 21 [13.5%] and in 14 [9%] subjects in frequency and in severity, respectively. There was a significant relationship between age, gender, work records and marital status with emotional exhaustion and reduced personal accomplishment of banks' cashiers. Emotional exhaustion and reduced personal accomplishment have a significant relationship with demographic characteristics
