ABSTRACT

Peptic ulcer is one of the commonest structural disorders of human gastrointestinal tract. The antacids used in the treatment are basic compounds, which neutralize and reduce gastric acidity by reacting with it forming neutral salts and these drugs are not free of side effects. Twenty patients with peptic ulcer and twenty normal subjects as controls were studied to evaluate the effect of antacids on calcium, phosphorus and acid-base balance in peptic ulcer disease. Results revealed that long-term treatment with antacids are usually associated with metabolic alkalosis and significant decrease in potassium, chloride and phosphorus serum levels with no significant changes in the level of serum calcium and sodium

ABSTRACT

Humoral and cell mediated immune response were studied in 14 juvenile diabetics and 10 healthy controls of matched age and sex. All patients were under appropriate dietary regimen and satisfactory parenteral insulin therapy. Estimations of serum immunoglobulins [IgA, IgG, IgM], serum C3,% MIF and E sheep resette test were done to all subjects. While, serum IgG was increased and% MIF was diminished in juvenile diabetics; yet the rest of immunoglobulins and resette test were not changed. The explanations were discussed

ABSTRACT

Thirty patients suffering from evidenced chronic renal failure, in addition to ten healthy volunteers were chosen for the measurement of the Achilles reflex time with an electromagnetic kinemometer. Prolongation of the whole reflex time [S-P interval], S-V interval and the V-P interval were detected. Derangement of the nerve function had been suggested to be responsible for the presence of prolonged S-V interval. Prolongation of the V-P interval explained by the presence of myopathy, hyperpotassaemia acidosis and/or the presence of carbohydrate intolerance in chronic renal failure

ABSTRACT

Vascular reactivity was estimated in both ten acromegalic patients and ten controls. The peripheral blood flow was measured by a venous occlusive plethysmography technique. Increased vascular reactivity in acromegalic patients was observed. This may be considered in the explanation of pathogenesis of hypertension in this disease. The probable mechanisms were discussed in the text
