ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: Cardiovascular disease has become a significant condition affecting human health. Increased arterial stiffness is a leading stage in the occurrence and development of many cardiovascular diseases. Objective: To observe the effect of different acute exercise programs on arterial stiffness of healthy young people under the same amount of exercise. Methods: We selected 16 healthy boys to conduct a blank control test, continuous exercise test, and intermittent exercise. They were divided into blank schemes. Car plan and running plan. Arterial stiffness was repeatedly measured immediately after exercise and 40 minutes after the end. Results: In the three exercise intervention experiments, the heart-ankle vascular index decreased significantly immediately after exercise. After 60 minutes of rest, the heart-ankle vascular index rebounded. Conclusion: Physical exercise can significantly reduce arterial stiffness. Changing the training intensity in sports with the same target heart rate does not affect arterial stiffness. Level of evidence II; Therapeutic studies - investigation of treatment results.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To understand the status of gender role development of sixth grade students, and to provide cross cultural theoretical basis for strengthening gender role of students in gender sensitive period.@*Methods@#Cluster sampling and random cluster sampling method were used to select primary school students from Indiana US and China for gender role study. There are 202 valid questionnaires for American primary school students and 554 for Chinese primary school students. The overall situation of gender role of Chinese primary school students and demographic specific characteristics was analyzed, and was compared with counterparts in the US.@*Results@#The overall gender role of Chinese primary school students was typically developed, with 41.2% androgyny, 13.4 % masculine, 11.2% feminine, and undifferentiated, 34.3%. Gender role develops faster in girl(29.2%) than that of boys( 39.4 %)( χ 2=4.13, P <0.05). The proportion of androgyny of Chinese students was significantly higher than that of the US(26.2%) ( χ 2=8.86, P <0.01), and the proportion of feminization in the US(17.3%) was significantly higher than that of China ( χ 2=4.34, P <0.05).@*Conclusion@#The development of gender role among contemporary primary school students is greatly improved, although boys gender role needs more guidance than girls. The development of gender role among Chinese primary school students is better than that of the US, which enhances our cultural competence in the future.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the reconstruction of the thumb and finger extension function in patients with middle and lower trunk root avulsion injuries of the brachial plexus. From April 2010 to January 2015,we enrolled in this study 4 patients diagnosed with middle and lower trunk root avulsion injuries of the brachial plexus via imaging tests, electrophysiological examinations, and clinical confirmation.Muscular branches of the radial nerve, which innervate the supinator in the forearm, were transposed to the posterior interosseous nerve to reconstruct the thumb and finger extension function.Electrophysiological findings and muscle strength of the extensor pollicis longus and extensor digitorum communis,as well as the distance between the thumb tip and index finger tip, were monitored. All patients were followed up for 24 to 30 months, with an average of 27.5 months.Motor unit potentials (MUP) of the extensor digitorum communis appeared at an average of 3.8 months, while MUP of the extensor pollicis longus appeared at an average of 7 months.Compound muscle action potential (CMAP) appeared at an average of 9 months in the extensor digitorum communis, and 12 months in the extensor pollicis longus.Furthermore, the muscle strength of the extensor pollicis longus and extensor digitorum communis both reached grade Ⅲ at 21 months.Lastly, the average distance between the thumb tip and index finger tip was 8.8 cm at 21 months. In conclusion, for patients with middle and lower trunk injuries of the brachial plexus, transposition of the muscular branches of the radial nerve innervating the supinator to the posterior interosseous nerve for the reconstruction of thumb and finger extension function is practicable and feasible.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the relationships of traumatic brain injury ( TBI ) and recognition and empathy. Methods 120 cases with moderate to-severe TBI and 120 healthy controls with age and gender-matched were chose.Participants were evaluated for facial and vocal affect recognition;and affective and cognitive empathy (empathic concern and perspective-taking,respectively) were detected. Results Participants with TBI had signifi-cantly poorer facial and vocal affect recognition.Facial and vocal affect recognition variances (14.28 ±3.87) points and DANVA2-Voice (14.12 ±3.14) points were significantly lower than those of the control group ( t=-3.927, 4.183,all P<0.05);the empathic concern score (19.58 ±4.87) points and perspective taking(14.46 ±5.34) points were significantly lower than those of the control group too (t=-3.015,-3.935,all P<0.05).Conclusion TBI patients have a tendency to avoid thinking about emotions and more likely to have problems recognizing others′emotions and assuming others′points of view.

ABSTRACT

In order to investigate the effects of vector-based hairpin small interference RNA (shRNA) on the reversal of multi-drug resistance (mdr) of A2780/Taxol cells, a novel vector pEGFP-H1/mdr1 containing mdr1-shRNA targeting at position 2943-2963 of mdr1 was designed and synthesized.Subsequently, A2780/Taxol cells were transfected with pEGFP-H1/mdrl, and the expression of mdr1 mRNA and P-gp was detected by using RT-PCR and Western blot respectively. MTT was used to measure the 50% inhibition concentration (1C50) of Taxol to A2780/Taxol cells. The results showed that at the 24th and 48th h after transfection, the expression of mdr1 mRNA was decreased to (52.1±1.0)% and (0.01+1.7)%, and that of P-gp decreased to (88.3±2.1)% and 0%, respectively. At the 48th h after transfection, the relative reversal rate of A2780/Taxol cells to Taxol was 69.54%. In vivo, the nude mice xenografts were injected with pEGFP-H1/mdrl, and then administrated Taxol. The tumor volume in pEGFP-H1/mdr1-transfected group was significantly reduced as compared with that in blank control group or pEGFP-H1-transfected group (807.20±103.16 vs 1563.78±210.54 or 1480.78±241.24 mm3, both P<0.01). These results suggested that transfection of pEGFP-H1/mdr1 could efficiently down-regulate the expression of mdr1 mRNA and P-gp in A2780/Taxol cells, and effectively restore the sensitivity of A2780/Taxol cells to Taxol both in vitro and in vivo.

ABSTRACT

Objective There is little population-based data on the prevalence and the environmental or genetic determinants of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in China. The purpose of this paper is to study LVH in relation to systolic blood pressure and the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) insertion/deletion(I/D) polymorphism in Chinese. Methods We recorded 12-lead ECG (CardioSoft, v4.2) in 1365 residents in the Jingning County, Zhejiang Province, China. LVH was defined according to the gender-specific Sokolow-Lyon and Comell product ECG criteria. Results Regardless of whether the Sokolow-Lyon or Comell product ECG criteria was used, the prevalence of LVH (20.7% and 4.8%, respectively) significantly (P<0.0001) increased with male gender (odds ratio [OR] 2.33 and 7.15) and systolic blood pressure (per 10 mm Hg increase, OR 1.46 and 1.33). If the Sokolow-Lyon criteria was used, the prevalence of LVH was also influenced by alcohol intake (OR 1.44, P=0.03) and body mass index (OR 0.83, P=0.0005). The association between the Sokolow-Lyon voltage amplitude and the ACE I/D polymorphism was dependent on antihypertensive therapy (P=0.01). In 1262 untreated subjects, but not 103 patients on antihypertensive medication, the ACE DD compared with Ⅱ subjects had significantly higher Sokolow-Lyon voltage amplitudes (29.8±0.6 vs. 28.0±20.5 mV, P=0.02) and higher risk of LVH (OR 1.74, 95% CI: 1. 12-2.69, P=0.01). Conclusion LVH is prevalent in Chinese, and is associated with systolic blood pressure and the ACE D allele. The genetic association might be modulated by antihypertensive therapy.
