ABSTRACT

<p><b>BACKGROUND</b>The prevalence of childhood asthma has been increasing in China. This study aimed to compare the prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment of asthmatic children from urban and rural areas in Beijing, China.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Schools, communities, and kindergartens were randomly selected by cluster random sampling from urban and rural areas in Beijing. Parents were surveyed by the same screening questionnaires. On-the-spot inquiries, physical examinations, medical records, and previous test results were used to diagnose asthmatic children. Information on previous diagnoses, treatments, and control of symptoms was obtained.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>From 7209 children in rural areas and 13,513 children in urban areas who completed screening questionnaires, 587 children were diagnosed as asthma. The prevalence of asthma in rural areas was lower than in urban areas (1.25% vs. 3.68%, χ2 = 100.80, P < 0.001). The diagnosis of asthma in rural areas was lower than in urban areas (48.9% vs. 73.9%, χ2 = 34.6, P < 0.001). Compared with urban asthmatic children (56.5%), only 35.6% of rural asthmatic children received inhaled corticosteroids (P < 0.05). The use of bronchodilators was also lower in rural areas than in urban areas (56.5% vs. 66.4%, χ2 = 14.2, P < 0.01).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The prevalence of asthma in children was lower in rural areas compared with children in the urban area of Beijing. A considerable number of children were not diagnosed and inadequately treated in rural areas.</p>

ABSTRACT

CD127 is the interleukin7 receptor ?(IL7R?),it regulates the specific respond of T lymphocytes to IL7.CD127 plays an indispensable role in the development of thymocytes into T lymphocytes, the survival and homeostatic proliferation of memory T cells. There are only two phases of the life period of T cells that do not express CD127:immature CD4+8+double positive(DP)thymocytes and activated T cells.Recently,it was found that CD127 play an important role as the specific marker of memory T cells and regulator T cells. The role and mechanism of CD127 in the life period of T cells were discussed herein.

ABSTRACT

@#ObjectiveTo observe the effects of a modified version of constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) on upper-extremity function of children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy.Methods22 patients were divided randomly into treatment group (n=10) and control group (n=12). Cases of control group received routine rehabilitation therapy, otherwise, those of treatment group were treated with CIMT. It involved restraining the unimpaired extremity with a restraining-instrument, and having the child engage in activities with the involved extremity 4 hours a day for 2 months repeatedly. Before and after treatment, affected upper-extremity function of all children were assessed with the Fine Motor Function Measure (FMFM) scale.ResultsThe fine motor function of all children in two groups improved significantly(P<0.05), but effect of treatment group was better than that of control group (P<0.05).ConclusionThe treatment of CIMT can improve upper-extremity function of children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy.

ABSTRACT

@#ObjectiveTo investigate the correlation between the gross motor function and the clinical types and complications of children with cerebral palsy (CP).MethodsThe gross motor function of 126 CP children were measured by Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS). Then the correlation between gross motor function, and clinical types and complications was analyzed.ResultsThere was a strong correlation between GMFCS and clinical types and complications ( P<0.001). GMFCS evaluation showed that 55.1% spastic children were categorized into levels Ⅰ and Ⅱ; 53.8% of dyskinetic and 85.7% of mixed children were categorized into levels Ⅳ and Ⅴ; 55.4% of diplegic and total hemiplegic children were categorized into levels Ⅰ and Ⅱ; 67.4% of tetraplegic and 55.6% complex hemiplegic children were categorized into levels Ⅳ and Ⅴ; 100% children with normal developmental quotient (DQ) and 91.6% above borderline of DQ were classified into levels Ⅰ and Ⅱ. The mental impairment was more severe; the levels of GMFCS were more higher. There were more visual impairment, hearing disorder, speech disability, feeding problem and epilepsy in children with levels Ⅲ, Ⅳ and Ⅴ than that with levels Ⅰ and Ⅱ.ConclusionThere is a significant correlation between GMFCS and clinical type and complications of CP, and the categorization of GMFCS is higher, the complications are more.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the prognostic sequelae in neontes with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and ven-tricnlar dilatation. Methods Seventy-six full term newborns infants with HIE were followed up at the age from 3 to 19 months after therapy. Twenty-five infants among them were followed up by telephone in the epidemic period of SARS.Results Among 76 infants of 88 newborn infants with HIE(84.6%), 73 infants were normal (96.1% ). 1 infant had cerebral palsy (1.3%), 2 infants died (2.6 %).Among 39 cases with mild HIE, none of them had cerebral sequelae; among moderate HIE. 1 infant had cerebral palsy (2.9%) 1 infant died (2. 9 %), interlenkin-4 among severe HIE 50 % died (P00.5 The poor outcome of HIE in those infants were related to intrauterine growth retardation, severe birth asphyxia;and inadequate treatment.Cranial ultra-sonography of 49 infants were done on follow-up,and 12 of them (24.5 % ) had ventricular dilatations, which appeared after birth with 6 infants. Others occurred on follow-up with 1 infant had cerobral palsy, all ventricular dilatations recovered to normal at 12- 19 months except the cerebral palsy. Conclusions The poor outcome of HIE depends on the infants with intranterine growth relarda-tion,severe birth asphyxia and inadequate treatment. The prognosis of transient ventrealar ddatation are good except cerebral palsy.J Appl Clin pediatr,2004,19(12) : 1045- 1047
