ABSTRACT

The present study was carried out to determine incidence of overweight and obesity in Pakistani servicemen with reference to their area of duty, feeding habits and also to identify risk factors. Accordingly, 2,501 servicemen selected from all over Pakistan using multiple stage stratified sampling protocol. Nutrition assessment performed using body mass index (BMI), waist to hip ratio (WHR) and dietary assessment using food frequency questionnaire. Collected data was analyzed using the SPSS version 25. Regression was used to find risk factors of obesity and WHR. Results indicated that about 1/4th of servicemen were smokers. Approximately, 1/5th of them were overweight and about one quarter were eating fruits and vegetables for <3 days/ week and <4 days/week, respectively. Only 1/3rd of them were physically active for at least <40 minutes per day. Age and fruits intake were significantly predicting BMI with a direct relation and vegetable intake was negatively correlated to BMI of the servicemen. Age and rank were significant predictors of WHR while, physical activity was negatively correlated to WHR. It is concluded and suggested from our study that there is a need to modify eating patterns and habits as well as improving physical activity on daily basis for healthy and long life of the servicemen.

ABSTRACT

Today, global focus of research is to explore the solution of energy crisis and environmental pollution. Like other agricultural countries, bulk quantities of watermelon peels (WMP) are disposed-off in environment as waste in Pakistan and appropriate management of this waste is the need of hour to save environment from pollution. The work emphasizes the role of ethanologenic yeasts to utilize significant sugars present in WMP for low-cost bioethanol fermentation. Dilute hydrochloric acid hydrolysis of WMP was carried out on optimized conditions employing RSM (response surface methodology) following central composite design (CCD). This experimental design is based on optimization of ethanologenesis involving some key independent parameters such as WMP hydrolysate and synthetic media ratio (X1), incubation temperature (X2) and incubation temperature (X3) for maximal ethanol yield exploiting standard (Saccharomyces cerevisiae K7) as well as experimental (Metchnikowia cibodasensisY34) yeasts. The results revealed that maximal ethanol yields obtained from S. cerevisiae K7 was 0.36±0.02 g/g of reducing sugars whereas M. cibodasensisY34, yielded 0.40±0.01 g ethanol/g of reducing sugars. The yeast isolate M. cibodasensisY34 appeared as promising ethanologen and embodies prospective potential for fermentative valorization of WMP-to-bioethanol.

ABSTRACT

The mutations are genetic changes in the genome sequences and have a significant role in biotechnology, genetics, and molecular biology even to find out the genome sequences of a cell DNA along with the viral RNA sequencing. The mutations are the alterations in DNA that may be natural or spontaneous and induced due to biochemical reactions or radiations which damage cell DNA. There is another cause of mutations which is known as transposons or jumping genes which can change their position in the genome during meiosis or DNA replication. The transposable elements can induce by self in the genome due to cellular and molecular mechanisms including hypermutation which caused the localization of transposable elements to move within the genome. The use of induced mutations for studying the mutagenesis in crop plants is very common as well as a promising method for screening crop plants with new and enhanced traits for the improvement of yield and production. The utilization of insertional mutations through transposons or jumping genes usually generates stable mutant alleles which are mostly tagged for the presence or absence of jumping genes or transposable elements. The transposable elements may be used for the identification of mutated genes in crop plants and even for the stable insertion of transposable elements in mutated crop plants. The guanine nucleotide-binding (GTP) proteins have an important role in inducing tolerance in rice plants to combat abiotic stress conditions.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Current study assessed the impact of Lantana camara invasion on native plant diversity in Pothohar region of Pakistan. The approach used for study was random samplings and comparisons of diversity indices [number of species (S), abundance (N), species richness (R), evenness (Jꞌ), Shannon diversity index (Hꞌ) and Simpson index of dominance (λ)] with two categorical factors i.e., invaded and non-invaded (control). Control plots harboured by an average of 1.74 more species/10m2. The control category was diverse (Hꞌ=2.56) than invaded category (Hꞌ=1.56). The higher value of species richness in control plots shows heterogeneous nature of communities and vice versa in invaded plots. At multivariate scale, ordination (nMDS) and ANOSIM showed significant magnitude of differences between invaded and control plots at all sites. The decrease in studied diversity indices in invaded over control sites indicated that plant communities become less productive due to Lantana invasion.

ABSTRACT

Orbital complications in sickle cell disease are uncommon, but can be severe enough to result in significant morbidity. We report a 10-year-old boy with sickle cell disease who presented with fever, bilateral eyelid edema, proptosis, and diminished vision with left eye involvement more than the right eye. Investigations revealed anemia, thrombocytopenia, and derangement of coagulation profile consistent with disseminated intravascular coagulopathy, and salmonella species was recovered from blood culture. MRI of the orbits showed bilateral large subperiosteal hematomas. The treatment included intravenous antibiotics, pulse methylprednisolone and bilateral canthotomy with surgical drainage of the hematomas. Postoperative visual assessment revealed complete loss of vision in the left eye with normal vision in right eye. This case highlights the importance of the early evaluation and consideration of surgical intervention in sickle cell disease with this rare complication

ABSTRACT

Aims: This study was undertaken to investigate the antioxidant effects of atorvastatin in treating cases of atherosclerosis associated with hyperlipidemia. Methodology: Forty local domestic rabbits were assigned to five groups (eight rabbits in each group): After two weeks acclimatization period, a group of 8 rabbits (Group I) were used as the baseline values of the study parameters. Another 8 rabbits were selected and maintained on standard chow diet (4% fat, 18% protein, 60% carbohydrate, and 4% fibers) throughout the experiment (12 weeks) and served as a normal diet control (Group II). The rest 24 rabbits were fed on an atherogenic diet for 8 weeks to induce atherogenesis. At the end of 8th week, a group of 8 atherogenic rabbits (Group III) were separated and sacrificed and served as an atherogenic-baseline group. The remaining 16 atherogenic rabbits were randomly allocated into two groups; first group received atherogenic diet only for the next four weeks and served as an atherogenic control (Group IV). The other group received atorvastatin (Group V). Results: Blood samples were collected for serum lipids, coagulation parameters and oxidation parameters. Results showed a significant improvement in the coagulation parameters and oxidation parameters in the atorvastatin treated group compared to the atherogenic control group (P= .01). Conclusion: This study illustrated the beneficial anti-oxidant effects of atorvastatin in treating atherosclerosis associated with hyperlipidemia.

ABSTRACT

Acute hemorrhagic leukoencephalitis (AHLE, Hurst's disease) is a rare hyperacute variant of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) characterized by severe, rapidly progressive clinical illness and hemorrhagic necrosis of white matter. Like ADEM, it is often preceded by viral illness or vaccination. Plasmodium vivax infection is usually uncomplicated and non-fatal with only a handful of reports of central nervous system complications. In this article, we report a previously unknown association between AHLE and P. vivax infection.

ABSTRACT

Systemic lupus erythematosus [SLE] is characterized by serum autoantibodies against protein components of small cytoplasmic ribo-nucleoproteins [scRNPs]. The origin and regulation of these anti-Ro/SS-A and anti-La/SS-B antibodies are not well understood. We attempted to define the association between the presence and absence of anti-Ro [SS-A] antibodies [Abs], and the criteria of SLE classification and non criteria manifestation of SLE, for better understanding of the disease course and prognosis. Ninety three SLE patients were included in the study. Retrospective analysis of their medical records was performed. 25% of SLE patients showed anti-Ro positive AB of which 91.3% were females. Anti Ro was significantly associated with lupus nephritis. While it showed a border line association with discoid rash and vasculitis. The presence of anti Ro antibodies with anti La antibodies increased the tendency of subcutaneous lupus to occur. Another interesting finding was the absence of antiphospholipid [APS] syndrome presentation [n=zero] in patients with anti Ro antibodies alone or in association with anti La positive antibodies versus seven patients detected with that syndrome in anti Ro and anti La negative group of patients [p=0.04]. Anti Ro is significantly associated with lupus nephritis. This may assist to predict renal involvement and to improve patient outcomes while simultaneously reducing disease costs. A paradox in disease severity may be suggested by a possible protective role against APL syndrome in these patients. The latter finding certainly warrants further investigations by studying larger population of patients

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the effects of silibinin hemisuccinate on the normal intraocular pressure [IOP] in rabbits. This study took place in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, College of Pharmacy, University of Baghdad during the period from January to June 2005. Twenty-five New Zealand white rabbits weighing 1.5-2.5 kg were used in this study. The effects ofcorneal instillation of various concentrations of silibinin hemisuccinate [0.5%, 0.75% and 1%] dissolved in arachis oil, on the normal intraocular pressure in rabbits were evaluated using indentation tonometry; in addition to the possible modulation of normal lOP-recovery time after intravenous infusion of 20% sodium chloride solution. The results showed that within 30 minutes of application, silibinin in various concentrations significantly reduces IOP in comparison to baseline values [P<0.05], with greater reduction being achieved with 0.75%. The effect of IOP reduction lasts 2-3 hours and proportionate to the concentration used. Moreover, remarkable delay in IOP recovery was observed after instillation of silibinin compared with the vehicle treated [arachis oil] animals, indicating interference with aqueous humor formation. The results obtained in this study provide experimental evidences for the effectiveness of silibinin in the reduction of IOP and possible modulation of its regulatory mechanisms

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the basic knowledge of our adult patients with diabetes mellitus [DM] on disease-related issues and selfcare based on the level of education and gender. The General Medical and Endocrinology outpatient clinics in a referral general hospital in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of United Arab Emirates [UAE]. Over a 10 'week period, we randomly selected 219 adults with DM who have been attending these two clinics and divided them into two groups as educated or uneducated subjects, and also on their gender. All, then were invited to answer an 8-item questionnaire on various diabetes 'related issues, attitude and self-care. 127 [58%] were uneducated and female gender predominated [59%]. Greater number of educated patients were familiar with self monitoring blood glucose [SMBG] [p=0.001], and self-injection of insulin [p=0.04] than the uneducated. Interestingly however, 25.5% of educated patients believed in the superiority of herbal medicine over the conventional hypoglycemic agents as compared to the uneducated [10%, p=0.01]. Nearly 30% of all patients believed in honey as a useful remedy for DM regardless of their level of education. The females were marginally more aware of the hypoglycemic symptoms than their male counterparts [65% vs.52% respectively, p=0.047]. Based on the above parameters, the overall modest outcome of our study indicates the need for intensifying patient's education to all, irrespective of the gender, with special attention given to the uneducated subjects. Efforts should also be made to dismiss therapeutic misconception as well

ABSTRACT

In order to assess some factors that affect the intra ocular pressure [IOP]; [116] patients[with elevated IOP], 79 males and 37 females their ages were between [22-80 years], duration of their disease [2 weeks-20 years], and [124] subjects [without IOP elevation] i.e. control group, without a history of [IOP] elevation or previous eye problem, their age between [20-80 years], [60] males and [64] females. In this study some factors affecting the [IOP] elevation were taken like, age, sex, obesity [reflected by body mass index [BMI] and body surface area [BSA]] and blood pressure [mean blood pressure]. The [IOP] was measured by the Goldmann's applanation tonometer which is a criterion standard. Paired and independent t tests had been applied at level of significance [0.05] using [SPSS] V. 10 program. According to the results of our study:-1. The effect of age on the [IOP] elevation was significant with advanced age. -2. The effect of mean blood pressure was significant in patients with [IOP] elevation than in control group [P<.0.05]. The study concluded that the patients with [IOP] elevation had higher mean blood pressure than control group [P<0.05], so the systemic hypertension could be a possible cause of [IOP] elevation, and that with advanced age the possibility of [IOP] elevation becomes high
