ABSTRACT

Coronary microcirculation dysfunction (CMVD) is an important risk factor for the prognosis of re-perfused ischemic heart. Recent studies showed that the evaluation of CMVD has significant impact on both the early diagnosis of heart diseases relevant to blood supply and prognosis after myocardial reperfusion. In this review, the definition of CMVD from the perspective of pathophysiology was clarified, the principles and features of the state-of-the-art imaging technologies for CMVD assessment were reviewed from the perspective of engineering and the further research direction was promoted.

ABSTRACT

Venous leg ulcer (VLU) is a disease of venous hypertension leading to open skin lesions of lower extremities, which is the terminal stage of chronic venous insufficiency. Considering the high prevalence and recurrence rate, VLU restrain daily activities, impair mental health and even contribute to social isolation of patients. Currently, surgery and compression therapy are wildly used to relieve symptoms and eliminate the etiological factors, however, ulcers remain unhealed even after these treatments in many cases. In this article, we review the clinical progress of treatment for VLU, including the debridement, antibiotics, ulcer dressing, negative pressure wound therapy and skin graft, to provide reference on the therapeutic strategy for different ulcer conditions.

ABSTRACT

Abstract A new method was established to determine the free inorganic cadmium ion ( Cd2+) in marine bivalves using high performance liquid chromatography and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry ( HPLC-ICP-MS) . The free Cd2+ in shellfish was ultrasonic extracted for 40 min by 10 mmol/L Tris buffer solution ( with 0. 1 mol/L NaCl, pH=7. 5), and the separation of Cd2+ was achieved using an IonPac CS5A analytical column with an IonPac CG5A guard column. The mobile phase consisted of 50 mmol/L C2 H2 O4 and 95 mmol/L LiOH. The new method had a good linear relationship with the correlation coefficient of 0. 999 and the standard recoveries of Cd2+ were all above 84. 6%. The free Cd2+ content in several kinds of marine bivalves was determined using the method and the results showed that the percentage of free inorganic Cd2+ to the total Cd content in samples with high Cd content was higher than those with low Cd content.

ABSTRACT

The term "burst-suppression" is used to describe the electroencephalogram (EEG) pattern characterized by theta or delta waves, at times intermixed with faster waves, and intervening periods of relative quiescence. Burst-suppression pattern can reflect the seriously suppressed brain activity under deep anesthesia. To investigate the relationship between burst-suppression features and anesthetic concentration, we adopted four straightforward indexes, i. e., burst-suppression ratio (BSR), burst frequency, burst amplitude and suppression amplitude, and used them to analyze the EEG recordings in ten isoflurane-anesthetized rats. It was found that all the four burst-suppression indexes changed along with anesthetic concentration, that BSR and burst amplitude increased with higher concentration of isoflurane while burst frequency and suppression amplitude decreased, and that BSR was the most sensitive and consistent measurement to indicate isoflurane concentration so it constituted a valuable tool for timely evaluation of burst-suppression feature under deep anesthesia. The result also showed that the composition of carrier gas (i. e. pure oxygen vs. mixed oxygen) did not influence the effect of anesthesia significantly; and the four indexes of burst-suppression features could keep relatively stable within 60 min under the isoflurane concentration of 2%. The present study provides quantitative information of burst-suppression features under different anesthetic depth and may help to develop a clinically satisfied system that could quantify the characteristics of EEG and rigorously evaluate the cerebral state of patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the evaluative values of amplitude integrated electroencephalogram (aEEG) in screening neonatal seizures. Methods The aEEG and video electroencephalogram (VEEG) on 32 patients with seizures hospitalized in Peking University First Hospital was conducted on the same day.The parameters of aEEG including the integrated spectra band, background rhythm and primitive electro signal were analyzed and compared with VEEG.Results Seizures presented clinically by 12 cases were detected by VEEG,and their electric discharges were detected by aEEG.The sensitivity of aEEG was 100%.VEEG showed electric discharges during intermediate stage in twenty cases and thus the seventeen of this group were detected by aEEG with its sensitivity of 87% and 100% in the specificity. The positive and negative predictive values of aEEG were 80% and 100%,respectively.But aEEG could not discriminate the attack stage or intermediate stage electric discharges. The abnormal background activity was detected by VEEG in 13 cases and the sensitivity of aEEG was 100% and the specificity was 83%.The positive and negative predictive value by aEEG were 76% and 100% respectively. The electric discharges of 32 cases were detected by VEEG whenever they were in attack stage or intermediate stage. All electric discharges could be detected through primitive electro signal by aEEG.The electric discharges in 3 cases were not detected by integrated spectra band from aEEG,but were detected by primitive electro signal from aEEG.Conclusions The sensitivity and specificity in the screening of neonatal seizures by aEEG is useful and could be applied clinically as a simple and safe screening method for recognizing neonatal seizures.

ABSTRACT

Bursting is an important firing mode of neurons. To propose a stochastic model of bursting spike train, the interspike interval (ISI) characteristics of single-spiking train and bursting spike train were analyzed and compared. In contrast with the exponential distribution of ISI in single-spiking train, normal distribution is supposed to be the ISI model of bursting spike train. Simulated neural spike trains were produced to investigate the spectrum features of the ISI model. The results showed that: (1) bursting spike train with normally distributed ISI held a low-pass spectrum while the spectrum of single-spiking train was flat; (2) the coefficient of variation of ISI in bursting train decided the bandwidth of its low-pass spectrum. Then neural activities from anesthetized rodent were used to check the validity of the model. 10 simultaneously recorded bursting spike trains and 10 single-spiking trains were selected during anesthesia and after pure-oxygen-washout period respectively. The spectrograms of these neural spike trains were analyzed and the results were matched with our mathematical model. It is believed that the bursting spike train model established in this paper will help to theoretically study the statistical characters of neural spike train and to add mathematical foundation in neural coding schemes.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To compare the newborn piglet models of hypoxic ischemic brain damage in hypoxia and hypoxia combined with occlusion of both carotid arteries. Methods: Twenty four 7-day-old piglets were divided into two groups. Group H: mechanical ventilation with low concentration of oxygen,Group HI; mechanical ventilation with low concentration of oxygen combined with occlusion of both carotid arteries. The piglets were inhaled with 10%, 8%, and 6% low-concentration oxygen for 30 min, and grouped into mild, moderate, and severe hypoxia ones. The changes of physiological parameter, cerebral blood flow and cerebral oxygen perfusion were detected. Results: There were no significant differences in blood gas analysis of oxygen saturation, blood lactic acid and pH between the two groups(P>0. 05) . The mean arterial pressure of severe hypoxia in HI was significantly lower than in H(P<0.05). The cerebral blood flow in H and HI was relatively stable after different degrees of hypoxia. As compared with the cerebral blood flow perfusion in group H and HI, there were no significant differences between them ( P>0. 05). The cerebral oxygen perfusion in H and HI was significantly descent after different degrees of hypoxia (P< 0.05). As compared with the cerebral oxygen perfusion in groups H and HI, there were no significant differences between them. Conclusion: H and HI have the same effect on physiological parameter, cerebral volume and cerebral oxygen perfusion of newborn piglets. The mechanical ventilation with low concentration of oxygen to newborn piglets can develop the HIBD model, it is not necessary to occlude carotid arteries.

ABSTRACT

Amplitude-integrated electroencephalogram (aEEG) which is a simplified form of standard EEG has been increasingly used in neonates. The aEEG method is easy to apply and to interpret and the simplicity of the method makes it feasible for "round the clock" recording. The present paper briefly introduces the signal acquisition, data analysis and clinical applications of aEEG. Then we propose a number of possible research directions in light of the domestic research in this field, in the future.
