ABSTRACT
To compare visual fields obtained with the automated kinetic functions of an automated perimeter with those obtained by manual kinetic testing using a Goldmann perimeter. Using both the Kowa Automated Perimeter and Goldmann perimeter, either two or three identical isopters were plotted in both normal subjects and glaucoma patients. A different perimetrist unaware of prior results, administered each test. All visual fields were independently interpreted by three glaucoma specialists. Results revealed that the visual fields determined with the automated perimeter were less reliable and more difficult to interpret. While generally similar to the fields determined with the Goldmann perimeter, the kinetic fields plotted with the automated perimeter occasionally included aberrant points, resulting in irregular isopter plots. The interaction between the perimetrist and the patient is still necessary during kinetic perimetry. Manual testing performed with a Goldmann perimeter seems to be more valid than kinetic field testing as determined with the automated perimetry in selected patients

To evaluate the results of surgery performed for removal of glass intraocular foreign bodies and their complications. A prospective study of consecutive cases which have been operated upon for removal of glass intraocular foreign bodies and treatment of their complications from May, 1995 to May, 2001 was done. Nine eyes of 9 patients were operated upon during the study period. All were males with an average age of 21 .8 years. Unbelted car occupants were the affected persons in 8 out of 9. In all cases, the foreign body was removed with repair of the injury related complications. Forty four percent had 20/40 or more vision. Eighty nine percent had 20/200 or more. Severe retinal injury was associated with poor visual outcome. Motor vehicle accidents affecting unbelted occupant are the main cause of glass intraocular foreign bodies. These foreign bodies need special instruments during extraction. Good visual outcome can be obtained if the retina is not severely affected
