Nurse caring behavior: the nurses versus patients' perceptions in Egypt And Jordan

The identification of behaviors that patients perceive as caring helps to emphasize what patients expect from their caregivers. Patients have always been known to value how effective nurses are in performing tasks, but, clearly, patients also value the effective dimension of nursing care. As a nurse begins clinical practice, it is important to consider how patients perceive caring and what are the best approaches to provide care. This study aims indentify the most and least important nurse caring behaviors as perceived by nurses and patients. The study was conducted in medical, surgical and neurological units in Egypt [Main University Hospital in Alexandria, Benha and Jordan University Hospitals] The subjects of this study comprised 90 Jordanian and Egyptian nurse in the previously mentioned settings, as well as one hundred adult patients from each country. Data were collected using The Caring Assessment instrument [care Q] which is a questionnaire used to identify the nurses' and patients' perceptions of the most and least important nurses caring behaviors. it provides evidence that caring can be addressed on a scientific level and must be examined at the behavioral level. Results of the present study revealed that the patient and nurses in Egypt had significantly different perceptions of the nurse caring behavior subscales regarding accessible, explain and facilitate, comfort, anticipates and monitors and follows through. While in the Jordan, the difference was found to be related to comfort and trusting relationship, perceived by both nurses and patients

study to identify the level of knowledge and self care performance of the colostomy patients and its effects on their quality of life

The impact of a stoma on a patients life is little discussed and is often underestimated, as well as the contribution of stoma therapy to health-related quality of life colostomy patients were dissatisfied with the information they received about the colostomy care, complications and lifestyle changes. Information and counseling for those patients appeared to be deficient and require continuous evaluation and revision. The study was carried out to determine the level of knowledge and self-care performance of the colostomy patients and its effect on their quality of life. The study was conducted in out patients unit at Institution of oncology and Gastro enterology Surgery Department at Messratta, Lypia. The study comprised 50 adult patients who performed colostomy and ileostomy within 3-6 months from the beginning of the operation. The study findings revealed that only half [54%] of subjects were trained about stoma care and 60% of them received oral instruction by doctors. As regards self-care performance the highest mean scores were obtained in performing irrigation and removal of old pouch, moreover a high significant difference was found between the patient's knowledge about self-care performance and the majority of quality of life domains. The study recommended that colostomy patients assessment of self care performance, knowledge and quality of life is needed, so specialist ostomy care nurses is particularly important during the first 3 to 6 months following surgery to improve patient's quality of life

Reprocessing competency of gastrointestine endoscopes, the gap between basic principles and actual practice in endoscopey units in Alexandria University

Endoscopy is a major diagnostic and therapeutic modality in the care of patients with disease of the gastro-intestinal tract. Ethically, we are obligated to do the right thing. However, is it fair that the first patient receives a properly cleaned/processed device and subsequent patients may not? All patients have the right to receive the same standard of care. The society of gastroenterology nurses associates [SGNA] presents a standards to be used for all settings where gastrointestinal endoscopy is practiced. The purpose of the study is 1- To assess the endoscopy nurses practice as regard principle of disinfection and sterillization as an infection control in gastrointestinal endoscopy units. 2- To identify the difference between the standard of infection control practice and the actual nurses practice. Nursing practice evaluation sheet includes endoscope reprocessing competency sheet and observational competency checklist were used. It was found that a huge gap exists between what is generally recommended for reprocessing endoscopes and clinical practice and what is practiced
