ABSTRACT

Abstract Radio frequency plasma, RF plasma, has been applied to a number of industrial applications. Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the RF plasma potential in Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) control. Three treatment variables: (1) helium or argon plasmas; (2) two power levels (50 and 100 watt); and (3) different RF plasma exposure times (0, 20, 40, 60 and 90 seconds) were examined in this study. The susceptibility of T. castaneum to treatment varies as gas, power level, and the exposure time varies. A positive correlation was found between insect mortality percent in treating larvae as well as treated pupae and exposure time to RF plasma and also the power level of irradiation. The results revealed that no live insects were found after a 90 second, 100 watt helium RF plasma treatment. The survival percents of the adults were developed from treated larvae and treated pupae were significantly reduced by increasing of the exposure time or power level. Obtained data indicated that the treatment with RF plasma might be considered as an environmentally compatible or alternative supplement to the other control methods for stored product-pests management.


Resumo Plasma de radiofrequência, plasma de RF, tem sido empregado em diversas aplicações industriais. Experimentos de laboratório foram conduzidos para determinar o potencial de plasma de RF no controle de Tribolium castaneum (Herbst). Foram examinados nesse estudo três variáveis ​​de tratamento: (1) plasma de hélio ou argônio; (2) dois níveis de potência (50 e 100 watts); e (3) diferentes tempos de exposição ao plasma de RF (0, 20, 40, 60 e 90 segundos). A suscetibilidade do T. castaneum ao tratamento varia conforme o gás, o nível de energia e o tempo de exposição. Foi encontrada uma correlação positiva dentre a porcentagem de mortalidade de insetos no tratamento de larvas, bem como as pupas tratadas e o tempo de exposição ao plasma de RF, e também o nível de potência da irradiação. Os resultados revelaram que não foram encontrados insetos vivos após 90 segundos, com 100 watts de tratamento com plasmas de hélio e RF. As porcentagens de sobrevivência dos adultos foram desenvolvidas a partir de larvas tratadas, e as pupas tratadas foram significativamente reduzidas pelo aumento do tempo de exposição ou nível de potência. Os dados obtidos indicaram que o tratamento com plasma de RF pode ser considerado como um suplemento ambientalmente compatível ou alternativo aos outros métodos de controle para o manejo de produtos-pragas armazenados.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Single-incision laparoscopic surgery is an attractive approach for cholecystectomy. However, its widespread application has many limitations. A significant obstacle of application in developing countries is the expensive and non affordable specialized single port systems and roticulating instruments. Objective: To assess the feasibility and effectiveness of the glove port technique of trans-umbilical single incision laparoscopic cholecystectomy (SILC) performed by a single surgeon using the conventional laparoscopic instruments. Methodology: 70 patients with symptomatic gall bladder stone disease were selected and underwent glove port laparoscopic cholecystectomy (GPLC). Patient’s demographic data, operative data, early postoperative complications, patient satisfaction score and wound measurement 3 months later, were documented and statistically analyzed. Results: The mean operative time was 47.75 min. The mean estimated blood loss was 14.5 ml. No conversion of the technique occurred. Overall intra operative complication rate was 5.7%, while post operative complication rate was 4.2%. Conclusion: On technical basis; we consider GPLC in selected cases; a safe, feasible and convenient, and cost effective method of SILC.

ABSTRACT

Background: Post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) is a recognized dermatologic complication of successfully treated visceral leishmaniasis (VL). PKDL lesions are suspected to be important reservoirs for VL transmission in Sudan. Prolonged treatment schedules, feeling of general well-being and the social stigmata of PKDL prevent most patients seeking treatment. The mainstay of treatment is cardiotoxic sodium stibogluconate (SSG) for 60-120 days. Recently, liposomal amphotericin B (Ambisome®) and immunochemotherapy gave promising results. Ambisome® is expensive and difficult to prepare under field conditions. Paromomycin/SSG combination has been shown to be safe, efficacious and can save time in VL treatment. This study aims to prove that Paromomycin/SSG combination can cure and reduce PKDL treatment duration. Methods: We are reporting nine cases of patients with PKDL lesions of ≥6 months duration who were diagnosed by clinical signs, histopathological/immunohistochemical and PCR. Results: Patients’ mean age was 11.7 ± 4.3 years. A third of the patients (3/9; 33.3%) who failed previous SSG treatment of 2-3 months duration responded completely to 40 days of paromomycin/SSG combination. The majority of patients (5/9; 55.6%) responded completely to 30 days of the combination. One patient (1/9; 11.1%) relapsed following 30 days paromomycin/SSG combination. Conclusion: It was concluded that paromomycin/SSG combination for 30 days is time-saving, safe and efficacious for PKDL treatment.

ABSTRACT

Omega-3 (ω-3), is long-chain, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) of plant and marine origin. The present study was conducted to evaluate the protective effect of omega-3 against cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of anticancer drug; Azathioprine (Imuran): Male albino mice were administrated two levels; therapeutic (5mg|kg) and double therapeutic (10mg|kg) doses. Azathioprine was intraperitoneally injected for 3 times at 48 hour interval. Omega-3 was orally administered with 2 ml/kg for ten consecutive days either before or after Azathioprine treatments. At the end of experimentation period, samples of bone marrow were collected from five mice within each group for micronucleus assay. The liver and testis tissue samples were removed and stored at – 80 °C until use for DNA extraction, and determination of glutathione contents. Another animal group was treated at the same regimen and were used for the determination of sperm abnormalities and sacrificed after 35 days. The results indicated that oral administration of omega-3 either before or after treatment of Azathioprine was effective in reduction of the frequencies of Mn-PCEs, decreased the DNA fragmentation, total sperm abnormalities and significantly increased sperm count, percentage of PCEs, and enhanced the ratio of PCEs to NCEs. However, random amplified polymorphism of DNA (RAPD) showed distinct differences in animal groups intoxicated with Azathioprine before and after omega-3 treatment, which reflected DNA protective effect of omega-3. Depletion in glutathione content in testis was also observed in Azathioprine treated mice, which was improved by oral administration of Omega-3 either before or after treatment with Azathioprine.

ABSTRACT

Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) is an autoimmune blistering disorder associated with a gluten-sensitive enteropathy (GSE), and is generally accepted as a cutaneous manifestation of celiac disease and is characterized by grouped excoriations; erythematous, urticarial plaques; and papules with vesicles. We reported an interesting case of adult DH occurred in a 30 year old Sudanese young adult with chronic inflammatory bowel disease, presented with typical string of pearls in the face, trunk and extremities for 2 months duration. The case is diagnosed and confirmed as DH where histopathologically shows a sub-epidermal bulla with microabscess formation, sigmoidoscopy and H. pylori ELISA test were positive IgA. Our case had an adult onset of presentation. Clinical features and histopathology are typical. It is associated of H. Pylori, although poorly responding to triple therapy (Doxycyclin 100 mg bid for 8 days, Cefixime 400 mg for 5 days and Rabeprazole as proton pump inhibitor (PPI) 20 mg for 28 days), but focusing as possible antigen was of paramount concern as possible causative antigen; as in this case all serological specific tests for Coeliac disease were negative. The case was considered to be the second case of DH with CIBD due to H. Pylori been reported in Sudan.
