ABSTRACT

To determine the outcome of nasal septal surgery. This descriptive case series study was carried out in the Department of ENT, Nishtar Hospital, Multan from April 2007 to October 2007. A total 100 patients were included in the study. All patients subjected to nasal septal surgery were examined after operation for a specific period of time for relief of nasal obstruction and for development of any kind of complication like nasal bleeding, nasal septal perforation, nasal adhesions and primary kind of internal nasal deformity. In nasal septal surgery, septoplasty was done in 30 cases and SMR was performed in 70 cases. Postoperative intra-nasal splints were used in 20 cases for 10 days. Anterior nasal packing was done in all cases, which was removed after 48 hours of surgery. Follow up observations and findings were included in the study and recorded on a follow up proforma till one month of duration. The incidence of complications was septal perforation in 6 cases, nasal adhesions in 15 cases and recurrence of symptoms in 4 cases. Nasal septal surgery is an effective way of relieving obstruction in respiration through nose. SMR still is a main surgical procedure being used in relieving nasal obstruction but the rate of complication is higher with it as compared to septoplasty
