ABSTRACT

The incidence of uterine arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is rare. However, it is clinically significant in that it can cause life-threatening vaginal bleeding. We report a case of a large uterine AVM with positive serum beta-human chorionic gonadotropin. A presumptive diagnosis was made; a uterine AVM accompanied by, early pregnancy or retained product of conception. Because this uterine AVM was extensive, transcatheter arterial embolization of both uterine arteries and extra-uterine feeding arteries was performed. Three months after undergoing transcatheter arterial embolization, complete resolution of the uterine AVM was confirmed without major complication.

ABSTRACT

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: In distal extension removable partial denture, the preservation of health of abutment teeth are very important, but they are always subjected to unfavorable stress. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was performed to investigate the effects of abutment splinting and design of direct retainer on the stress distribution of abutments in unilateral distal extension removable partial dentures. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Abutments were splinted by different method. In group 1, autment teeth were not splinted, in group 2, canine and 1st premolar were splinted, and in group 3, canine, 1st and 2nd premolars were all splinted. Three different types of direct retainer such as Akers clasp, RPI clasp, and wrought wire clasp were designed. Strain was measured with Switch and Balance Unit(SB-10, Measurement Group Instruments Division, Raleigh, USA) and Strain Indicator(P-3500, Measurement Group Instruments Division, Raleigh, USA). 15kg of vertical and oblique loads was applied at central fossa of missing 2nd molar area. RESULTS: The strain on lingual side of 2nd premolar was the greatest, and abutment splinting induced decrease of strain on buccolingual side of 2nd premolar. The strain of loaded area was decreased by abutment splinting and there was no statistical difference of strain between Group2 and Group 3, and strain on 2nd premolar in wrought wire clasp was the least. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study, splinting of two distal abutment teeth is enough for stress distribution widely, and wrought wire clasp was more benefitable than others.

ABSTRACT

Development of new ceramic and esthetic need of patient increased the use of ceramic restorations. The purpose of this study was to confirm the possibility of recycling for IPS Empress2 which has a lot of advantages in esthetics. 1st, 2nd and 3rd pressed disc-shaped(10x1.5mm) IPS Empress 2 specimens were made with IPS Empress ingot(shade 200, Ivoclar, Liechtenstein) and pressing furnace(IPS Empress EP 500, Ivoclar, Liechtenstein). Flexure strength was measured with universal testing machine(Zwick 145641, Zwick, Germany), and color change and staining resistance of specimens were evaluated with colorimeter (Model TC-6FX, Tokyo Denshoku Co., Japan). The followings were drawn from this study : 1. Flexure strength of the 1st, the 2nd, and the 3rd pressed specimens showed 236.78 MPa, 247.16MPa, and 220.72MPa, respectively. Flexure strength of the 2nd pressed specimens was higher than others, but there's no statistical difference between them. 2. The color difference between the 1st and the 2nd pressed specimens was 3.25, and that between the 1st and the 3rd pressed specimens was 3.63(P<0.05). 3. The color change after staining of the 1st, the 2nd, and the 3rd pressed specimens were 1.43, 2.64, and 1.45, respectively. In this study, reused IPS Empress 2 specimens showed insignificant change of flexure strength and stain resistance, but they showed some color change according to reuse. From this results, the limited possibility of reuse for IPS Empress 2 could be considered.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of desensitizer on shear bond strength of adhesive resin cements for all ceramic crown. For this study,Gluma desensitizer(R)(Heraeus Kulzer, Germany)and MS Coat(R)(Sun medical, Japan)were used as desensitizer, and Bistite II(R) resin cement(Tokuyama, Japan)and VariolinkII(R) resin cement(Ivoclar, Liechtenstein) were used. IPS Empress ceramics were bonded to dentin surfaces after application of desensitizer and shear bond strength of specimens were measured using UTM(Zwick 1456 41, Zwick, Germany)at a crosshead speed of 1mm/min. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The shear bond strength of both resin cements were not affected by Gluma desensitizer(R) containing HEMA. 2. The shear bond strength of Bistite II(R) resin cement was significantly decreased by MS Coat(R). 3. The failure mode in MS Coat(R)-Bistite II(R) group was mainly adhesive type between dentin and resin cement, but that of Gluma desensitizer(R)-Variolink II(R) group was mainly mixed type, combined adhesive failures between dentin and resin cement or porcelain and resin cement.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Recently, accidents have been reported of young adults who inhale industrial bond vapor. Acquiring industrial bond is easy for young adults, and glue sniffing has thus become a serious social problem. However, there have been few reports concerning the changes in the olfactory epithelium after exposure of industrial bond vapor. The aim of this study is to describe the morphological changes of the olfactory mucosa after being exposed to industrial bond vapor, using HE, AB, AB-PAS stains, immunohistochemistry and the electron microscopy. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Healthy ICR mice were exposed to industrial bond vapor (acetone 5212+/-1268 ppm, c-hexane 3757+/-711 ppm, methylcyclopentane 1820+/-375 ppm, n-hexane 139+/-30 ppm and toluene 0.9+/-1.4 ppm). The vapor was given to each animal with duration of 20 min/day for 3 days, 5 days, 7 days or 14 days in a specially designed box for this study. After exposure to industrial bond vapor, mice olfactory mucosae were excised and prepared for HE, AB, AB-PAS stains, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. RESULTS: Loss of cells and disarrangements of olfactory epithelium were prominent on the third day of exposure and the epithelium recovered to the normal state after the day 7 in the HE stain. And there were also definite ultrastructural changes in the epithelium : loss of microvilli in supporting cells, exposure of olfactory vesicles to the luminal surface and apoptotic bodies in electron microscopic study. Study with the AB and AB-PAS stains demonstrated an evidence of decreased mucin secretion on the day 3 and the content of mucin was normalized after the day 7. In the PCNA study, cells were unable to proliferate until day 3. The proliferation potential were increased (4 fold) on day 5 and returned to normal on day 14. CONCLUSION: This result indicated that industrial bond vapor can damage the olfactory epithelium of mice which can recover rapidly. Apoptosis and active proliferation could be the factors that are involved in the recovery of the epithelium that is open to regular industrial bond vapor exposure on daily basis.

ABSTRACT

This study was performed to investigate the effects of impression method and design of the retainer on the stress of abutment tooth in distal extension RPD. Three different types of direct retainer such as Akers clasp. RPI clasp, and wrought wire clasp were designed . Stress on the abutment tooth was measured and analyzed with strain gauge method. Impressions were anatomic impression technique and functional impression technique. The following conclusions were drawn from this syudy. 1.The stress at the abutment tooth on all RPD was decreased in functional impression except RPI clasp retained RPD. 2.The stress at the abutment tooth on RPI clasp retained RPD was the most smallest in anatomic impression 3.While load is increase the stress at the abutment tooth was increased, but the change of stress at the buccal side of abutment tooth was not too much in functional impression.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The endolymph produced from cochlear lateral wall regulates fluid balance and maintains positive endocochlear potentials. Although many immunohistochemical studies on ion transport enzymes have been reported, their mechanisms are still not completely understood. And there are no reports on the distribution of receptor tyrosine kinases in the cochlear lateral wall of the guinea pig. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the expression of the fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) and transforming growth factor receptor-beta (TGFR-beta, type II) in the lateral wall of the guinea pig cochlea. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We investigated the immunohistochemical localization of the receptor tyrosine kinases (FGFR, TGFR-beta) in the lateral wall of the Preyer's positive, pigmented guinea pig. RESULTS: The results showed that receptor tyrosine kinases were expressed in the cytoplasm of the marginal cells, intermediate cells in the stria vascularis, and type II, III, IV, and V fibrocytes, but not the basal cells and type I fibrocytes, in the lateral wall of the guinea pig. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that receptor tyrosine kinases are involved in the various ion transports and that they participate in the PLC-IP(3) second messenger system.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Damage in the auditory sensory epithelia is irreversible and the resulting hearing loss is permanent in mammals. Nevertheless, mammals like birds can recover their auditory function anatomically and physiologically after the sensorineural hearing loss. One of the functions of a receptor tyrosine kinase is to controll the cellular metabolisms like motility, growth, differentiation, regeneration, and ion transport via various pathways. There are no reports on the distribution of receptor tyrosine kinases in the guinea pig cochlea. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the expression of the fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) and transforming growth factor receptor (TGFR-beta, type II ) in the cochlear sensory epithelia of guinea pigs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We investigated the immunoreactivity and functional roles of the receptor tyrosine kinases-FGFR and TGFR-beta (type II) - by using surface preparation technique in the cochlea of the Preyer's positive, pigmented guinea pig. RESULTS: The results showed that receptor tyrosine kinases were expressed in the cytoplasm of Deiter's and Hensen's cells to FGFR and TGFR-beta (type II), and the stereocillia of inner and outer hair cells to FGFR by surface preparation technique. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that receptor tyrosine kinases are involved in the cellular growth, differentiation and regeneration in the cochlear supporting cells, and ion transport in the hair cells of the mammals. We found that receptor tyrone kinases are not related to outer hair cells participating in the PLCgamma1-IP3 second messenger system.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Tinnitus is noise from ear or head without any external sound stimulation and can cause hearing difficulties, psychogenic disturbances or many difficulties in everyday life. The etiology of tinnitus is yet to be described and the management is also very difficult. Our study was performed to evaluate the characteristics and the management of idiopathic tinnitus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred forty five patients (163 ears)with idiopathic tinnitus were entered into our department's database between Nov. 1995 and Oct. 1997. Patients were treated with drugs (dimenhydrinate, trimetazidine, diazepam, ginko biloba extract), the stellate ganglion block (SGB) or stellate ganglion block combined with drugs (combined therapy). RESULTS: It was found that (1) the average age was 53.3 years: (2) there was no laterality: (3) the buzzing sound was the most common: (4) the average symptom duration was 486 days: (5) the most common loudness was 30-49dB: (6) the most common frequency was 4-5.9 KHz: (7) the treatment with drugs was effective in 28.0%: (8) the treatment of SGB was effective in 32.8%: (9) the combined therapy was effective in 41.8%: (10) there was no statistical significance among three groups. CONCLUSION: Although there was no statistical significance, SGB was more effective than drugs whereas the combined therapy was more effective than either drugs or SGB. Therefore, SGB could be considered as another therapeutic modality in idiopathic tinnitus.
