ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: There is no study addressing transplantation of umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells for the treatment of spinocerebellar ataxia.OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical effect of human umbilical cord stem cells transplantation in the treatment of autosomal dominant spinocerebellar ataxias. METHODS: Spinocerebellar ataxias patients selected from Stem Transplantation Center of the 455 Hospital of Chinese PLA were treated with umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells transplantation via intrathecal injection. The number of umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells was 107 per transplantation, once per week, for 4 weeks.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Both the total score of the International Cooperative Ataxia Rating Scale and Activities of Daily Living score were significantly decreased at 1 month after transplantation compared with before treatment (P < 0.05). The nerve function was significantly improved and the total effective rate was up to 16.7%. Experimental findings indicate that, transplantation of umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells via intrathecal injection is a feasible and effective treatment to ameliorate the clinical efficacy of spinocerebellar ataxias patients and improve their quality of life.

ABSTRACT

Objectives:To investigate the nutrition support in patients with severe neurosurgical disease. Methods:Enteral nutrition(EN) was used in early phase(48~72 h, postoperatively or after trauma) in 28 cases with severe neurosurgical disease.Parenteral nutrition was adopted when EN was insufficient.Dose of glucose was limited at early period(acute phase,5~7 days after occurrence). Results:23 cases were cured and 5 cases died.During the period of EN,glucose and lipid metabolic abnormality or liver enzyme change were not found. There was no complication such as severe diarrhea, belly bulge. All patients who were on respiration machine were all taken off successfully. Conclusions:Early EN can improve the rate of cure and reduce the complication and mortality.

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the practical photodynamic therapy (PTD) efficiency on tumor of en-dogenous ALA-induced PP Ⅸ. Methods: Morphoraglcal alterations were observed after PDT 0f protopor-phyrin Ⅸ (PP Ⅸ) by application of endogenous 6-aminolaevulinic acid(ALA) in Kunming mice bearing H22hepatic carcinoma. Results: After PDT, the tumor cells showed degeneration, deformation and nuclearnecrosis and the tumor tissues were defused with hemorrhage and necrosis. The ultrastructural pathologyindicated that mitochondria in tumor cells were injured and destroyed. C0nclusi0n: The pathological alter-ations suggest that PDT of ALA on H22 hepatic carcinoma was conducted by the destruction of mitochon-dria.
