ABSTRACT

Diet management is the key part in the prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD). A plant-based diet is a diet consisting mostly or entirely of foods derived from plants, with little or no animal foods. In recent years, research on plant-based diets for chronic kidney disease has been increasing. Large-scale epidemiological studies and interventional studies consistently suggest that plant-based diets could reduce the risk of CKD and related complications and slow down CKD progression. This article reviews the research progress of plant-based diets in the prevention and control of CKD.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the impact of healthcare-associated septicemia (HAS)on hospitalization expense as well as length of hospital stay,so as to optimize the allocation of healthcare resources, and provide scientific basis for reducing the economic burden caused by septicemia. Methods Hospitalized patients with confirmed HAS in a tertiary first-class teaching hospital between June 1 ,2012 and May 31 ,2015 were investigated retrospectively,con-trol group was set up in a 1 :1 ratio, hospitalization expense and length of hospital stay between two groups were compared. Results A total of 285 cases and 285 controls were enrolled in the study, the median of hospitalization expense in case group was higher than control group (¥19 718.39 vs ¥9 289.04,P <0.05);the median of length of hospital stay in case group was longer than control group (14.89 days vs 9.22 days,P <0.05).The disease bur-den caused by septicemia in different age groups and departments were different. The improvement rate of case group was lower than control group (76.49% [218/285 ]vs 83.51 % [238/285 ],χ2 = 2.562,P = 0.009 ). Conclusion As the common blood stream infection in hospitalized patients, septicemia not only increased the ex-pense of diagnosis and treatment, but also affected turnover rate of hospital bed.Rapid and effective diagnosis and treatment is significant o prevent and control septicemia.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The osteoblastogenetic function of stem cell and local vasoformation is an important influencing factor in bone tissue engineering restoration.OBJECTIVE: To investigate the function of osteoblast induced, cultured and differentiated from mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs) and the expression of vascular endothelial growth factors(VEGF) in rabbits in itro.DESIGN: A single sample study and repetitive observational measurement by using cells as subjects SETTING: Department of histology and embryology in a university MATERIALS: The study was conducted in the Department of Histology and Embryology of Guangdong Medical College between March and December of 2002. The subjects were rabbits' MSCs.METHODS: The MSCs of newborn rabbits ere isolated and cultured. The cultured cells were induced to osteoblastogenesis with an osteo-inductive medium containing dexamethasone, ascorbic acid and β-glycerophosphate to observe the coloration of alkaline phosphates(ALP) and the formation of mineralized nodule in the cultured cells.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: ① observation of cell morphology, ②identification of steoblastogenesis from the cultured cells ③ expression of VEGF in osteoblasts derived from the cultured cells RESULTS: fter MSCs osteo-inductive culture, cells had strong ALP staining with the formation of mineralized node, and the VEGF expression enhanced with the grey scale of 132.3 ± 4.6, which was significantly different from that of the VEGF expression in MSCs( 148.5 ± 5.3) ( P < 0.05).CONCLUSION: MSCs can be induced into osteoblasts with enhanced expression of VEGF, which might participate in the formation of endothelial cells.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVES</b>To investigate the relationship between H. pylori infection, gastric cancer and other gastric diseases through the changes in gastric mucosa and the status of different gastric diseases within 5 years after H. pylori eradication in H. pylori-positive subjects in a high incidence region of gastric cancer.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>One thousand and six adults were selected from the general population in Yantai, Shandong province, a high incidence region for gastric cancer in China. Gastroscopy and Campylobacter-like organism (CLO) testing were performed on all subjects. Biopsy samples from the gastric antrum and body were obtained for histology and assessment of H. pylori infection. All H. pylori-positive subjects were then randomly divided into two groups: treatment group receiving Omeprazole Amoxicillin Clarythromycin (OAC) triple therapy and placebo as controls. These subjects were endoscopically followed up in the second and fifth year. We compared the endoscopic appearance and histology of the biopsy specimens from the same site obtained at the first and last visits.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>All 552 H. pylori-positive subjects were randomly and evenly divided into treatment group or control group. During the five-year follow-up, the numbers of patients who continued to be negative or positive for H. pylori were 161 and 198, respectively. Statistical analysis revealed that: (1) At the initial visit, there were no significant differences in the severity and activity of inflammation, atrophy and intestinal metaplasia between the biopsy specimens from the antrum and body respectively in both groups. (2) The severity and activity of inflammation in both the antrum and body were markedly reduced after H. pylori eradication (P = 0.000). (3) Within five years after H. pylori eradication, intestinal metaplasia in the antrum either regressed or had no progression, while the proportion of intestinal metaplasia in the H. pylori-positive group increased significantly (P = 0.032). (4) After H. pylori eradication, the atrophy in both the antrum and body had no significant regression. The P value was 0.223 and 0.402, respectively.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>H. pylori eradication results in remarkable reduction in the severity and activity of chronic gastritis, marked resolution of intestinal metaplasia in the antrum. On the other hand, continuous H. pylori infection leads to progressive aggravation of atrophy and intestinal metaplasia.</p>

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the value of the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection of gastric juice in the diagnosis of gastric carcinoma. Methods After being super centrifuged, the supernatant of the gastric juice was chromatographed by reversed phase HPLC using C 18 column as the stationary phase and 20% methanol/H 2O as the mobile phase. The flow rate was set to 1 ml/min. The eluate was then detected with a fluorometer. Results 251 patients with different gastric diseases including 40 cases with gastric carcinoma were enrolled in our study. There were two characteristic peaks in the chromatograms, which appeared in both the benign and malignant lesions. The difference between benignancy and malignancy was the areas of the two peaks. The areas in the malignancy were much larger than those of the benignancy ( P
