ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo assess the two-year outcome of initial endodontic treatment and evaluate the relationship between the treatment outcome and relevant factors.

METHODSA total of 296 patients with 371 teeth received initial endodontic treatment between January 2005 and December 2007 were included in the study. The teeth were treated using crown down technique, and followed for two years. The outcome was examined clinically and radiographically. The relevant factors, including pulp vitality, apical periodontitis, the number of tooth root, and state of root canal obturation, were analyzed.

RESULTS143 (176 teeth) from 296 patients (371 teeth) were followed for two years. 152 teeth (86.36%) with normal limits were assessed as "healed" (no apical periodontitis, no signs or symptoms). 24 teeth were assessed as "disease", 12 teeth were extracted and 12 teeth were retreated. The healing rate(HR) was statistically higher for vital teeth (95.38%) than that for devital teeth (81.08%). The HR of teeth without apical periodontitis (95.24%) was significantly higher than that with apical periodontitis (73.24%). Other factors were associated with different HR, but no statistical significance (P>0.05).

CONCLUSIONApical periodontitis and pulp vitality may be prognostic factors for outcome of initial endodontic treatment.

ABSTRACT

To explore the impact of acceleration load on the temporomandibularjoint in aviators and its clinical significance.617 aviators flying aircraft of different types without previous history of temporomandibularjoint disease were studied. Abnormal manifestations of the temporomandibularjointswere analysed. The incidence of temporomandibular joint symptoms was markedly higher in the fighter plane pilots than that in the transportation planegroup. Load induced by acceleration could be one of the main causative factors of temporomandibularjoint disorder.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To summarize the expierence in the prostheti c treatment of serious attrition with defect of dentition in old people. Methods: Removable denture with occlusal pad was one timely prepa red for 32 people aged 58~80 years old with serious attrition and defect of de n tition. 6 of the patients had temporomandibular disturbance (TMD). The time of f ollow up visit of the patients ranged from 2.5 months to 5 years.Res ults: The masticatory function of the patients was improved obviousl y .Unilateral mastication was achieved. The symptom of articulation was all rel ieved. The occlusal relationship was not changed or occlusal vertical dimension ( OVD) was appropriately increased in the patients without TMD. The symptom of TMD did not appear after using denture in patiends with TMD.Conclu sions:During occlusal reconstruction in old people with serious attri tion and defect of dentition, the recovery of OVD and occlusal relationship is v ery important.
