ABSTRACT

The jejunal mucosa of 90% of well nourished children with enteral diarrhea [30 patients] showed definite histopathological changes which varied from mild to severe. The severity of mucosal changes was neither related to the causative organism or degree of dehydration. The jejunal mucosa of 13 marasmic children with enteral diarrhea showed moderate to severe changes while all kwashiorkor patients [7] with diarrhea showed severe changes. Lactase activity as well as fat absorption were positively correlated with the severity of the mucosal changes. Recovery of histopathological changes was slower in malnourished patients

ABSTRACT

As a part of surveillance of drug resistance in eterobacteria in Alexandria, Egypt, two groups of E. coli were selected: 20 EPEC strains isolated from the stools of diarrheal infants and 11 strains of NLF E. coli [atypical E. coli] isolated from urine of outpatients suffering from persistent urinary tract infection. Antibiotic sensitivity testing revealed that 80% of EPEC and 72% of NLF E. coli were resistant to more than two antibiotics. 62.5% of the resistant EPEC were able to transfer resistance to various degrees to the standard recipient and the commonest pattern transferred was AM C S N SD; only one strain of NLF E. coli initially resistant to AM C N S SD TE SXT was able to transfer resistance to AM C N TE to the standard recipient

ABSTRACT

Among Hemophilus both H. egypticus and H. influenzae biotype III share the etiology of conjunctivitis in Egypt. They also share the same key biochemical characteristics. Consequently, it was felt necessary to determine de novo the action of Hemophilus biotype III on a large number of sugars in order to verify the assumed resemblance or perhaps reveal more differential characters. Seventy strains of Hemophilus influenzae were isolated from cases of acute mucopurulent conjunctivitis in Behaira. Biotyping differentiated the strains into 50 strains of H. influenzae biotype III and 20 strains of biotype II. All strains were tested for acidification of 22 sugars. Fermentation could only be detected in 11 sugars
