ABSTRACT

Purpose@#This study aimed to update the previously published nursing practice guideline for oral care. @*Methods@#The guideline were updated according to the manuals developed by National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN), and a Handbook for Clinical Practice Guideline Developer Version 1.0. @*Results@#Updated nursing practice guideline for oral care was consisted of 10 domains and 79 recommendations. The number of recommendations in each domain were: 5 general issues, 2 oral care indications, 9 oral assessment, 16 general oral care, 12 oral care for critically ill patients, 16 oral care for cancer patients, 12 oral care for cancer patients with oral complications, 5 oral care education, 1 oral care referral, and 1 documentation and report. In terms of grades for recommendations, 11.4% was grade A, 17.0% was grade B, and 68.2% was grade C. Twelve new recommendations were developed and 7 previous recommendations were deleted. @*Conclusion@#Updated nursing practice guideline for oral care is expected to serve as an evidence-based practice guideline for oral care in South Korea. It is recommended that this guideline be spread to clinical nursing settings nationwide to improve the effectiveness of oral care practice.

ABSTRACT

Purpose@#The purpose of the study was to identify the comparison with the different methods of acupressure treatment in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. @*Methods@#This study was a single group pretest-posttest design. Thirty patients age 30- 65 scheduled for chemotherapy were included. The data were collected through self- reported questionnaires on nausea, vomiting, and anorexia and analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon signed ranked test. @*Results@#The relieving effect of nausea and vomiting (Z=-2.54, p=.011) was significant in P6 acupressure by wrist bands. @*Conclusion@#Patients undergoing chemotherapy have relieving effects on nausea and vomiting after P6 acupressure by wrist band. This study demonstrates the stimulation of the P6 acupressure by wrist band for reducing nausea and vomiting for breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

ABSTRACT

During a survey of fungal diversity in the class Sordariomycetes, 3 fungal strains, CNUFC-KMHY6-1, CNUFC-MSW24-2-11, and CNUFC-GW2S-4 were isolated from soil and freshwater samples, respectively in Korea. The strains were analyzed both morphologically and phylogenetically on the basis of internal transcribed spacer and RNA polymerase II second largest subunit gene sequences. On the basis of their morphology and phylogeny, CNUFC-KMHY6-1, CNUFC-MSW24-2-11, and CNUFC-GW2S-4 isolates were identified as Arcopilus aureus, Memnoniella echinata, and Stachybotrys sansevieriae, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, Ar. aureus and M. echinata have not been previously recorded in Korea, and this is the first report of S. sansevieriae from freshwater niche.

ABSTRACT

Porcine circovirus (PCV) is a small, nonenveloped virus that contains a single-stranded circular DNA genome of about 1.76 Kb and belongs to the family Circoviridae. The PCV-2 was thought to be one of the causative agents for postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) in pigs. In this study, the complete genome of two PCV-2 Korean isolates (KSY-1 and KSY-2) were sequenced and characterized. Also, the ORF2 gene of KSY-1 isolate was expressed in baculovirus expression system and the expressed protein was characterized. The sequence data indicated that the PCV-2 genome of two Korean isolates were 1,768 bases in length and encoded 2 major proteins, Rep (ORF1, 314 amino acids, 37 kDa) and a capsid (ORF2, 233 amino acids, 28~30 kDa) protein. There were 5 glycosylation sites and stem-loop structures with the nonanucleotide (5-AAGTATTAC-3), typically seen in PCV-2. Compared to nucleotide sequences of PCV-1 and PCV-2 reference strains, two Korean isolates were closely related; that is, they showed 98% homology in nucleotide sequence each other. Also, they showed 95~99% homology in nucleotide sequences with those of PCV-2 isolates but 76% similarity with those of PCV-1 reference strains. A phylogenetic analysis revealed that nucleotide sequences of Korean isolates were close to those of PCV-2 (AF055392) isolated in Canada. The baculovirusexpressed ORF2 migrated at 30 kDa and reacted with PCV-2 specific antiserum by indiect fluorescent antibody and Western blot analyses. It is concluded that our results could be valuable to understand the molecular characteristics of PCV-2 and to develop diagnostic methods for PCV-2 infections.
