ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Non-enhanced spiral computed tomography (NESCT) has become the preferred method for imaging urinary calculi. We evaluated the Hounsfield units (HU) of urinary calculi on NESCT as a predictor of the therapeutic effect of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated 72 patients with urinary calculi who underwent ESWL. The HUs of calculi were measured on the pretreatment NESCT and at post-treatment via radiographic assessment. The patients were divided into 2 groups, the response group (n=39): the patients with remnant calculi less than 3mm or they were without remnant calculi, and the non-response group (n=33): the patients with remnant calculi greater than 3mm. The HUs of the response and non-response groups were then compared. RESULTS: The HUs of the response and non-response groups were 529.7+/-168.2 and 814+/-116.6, respectively, and the HUs of the non-response group was significantly higher than that of the non-response group. CONCLUSIONS: The HU of urinary calculi, as seen on NESCT, can help to predict the therapeutic effect of ESWL and also select the most effective treatment modalities for the patients suffering with urinary calculi.

ABSTRACT

A multilocular cyst of kidney is a rare pathological entity, which has been reported in the literature under several names. These various names reflect the controversy surrounding their nature. This tumor is traditionally regarded as benign in nature and a nephrectomy has to be performed because of the difficulty in its accurate diagnosis. Malignant recurrence of a multilocular cyst of kidney has an even rarer incidence, with only a few cases having been reported. We report a case of 50-year-old male, with an incidentally detected right renal cystic mass. This mass was pathologically confirmed as a multilocular cyst of kidney after a radical nephrectomy, which locally recurred as a malignant mesoblastic nephroma.

ABSTRACT

A rare case of an epididymal leiomyoma in a 62-year-old man is reported. A physical examination revealed a hard, non-tender, 2cm sized round mass located in the tail of the right epididymis. Scrotal ultrasonography showed a 2.1x2cm sized, well defined round inhomogeneous mass within the tail of the right epididymis. A right epididymectomy was performed. The diagnosis was confirmed by surgical excision and subsequent histological analysis.

ABSTRACT

Cystic dysplasia of the testis is a rare benign congenital lesion of the rete testis that is often associated with renal and ureteral abnormalities. Herein, a case of cystic dysplasia of the testis, associated with an ipsilateral hypoplastic type of renal dysplasia and an ureterovesical junction obstruction, is reported in a 7-year-old boy.
