ABSTRACT

Intussusception and acute appendicitis are common emergency conditions in children. They should be promptly differentiated in pediatric patients presenting with suggestive symptoms. However, both diseases may occur simultaneously. Herein, we present two cases of intussusception of the appendix accompanied with appendicitis.

ABSTRACT

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is spreading rapidly around the world. Several articles have so far reported on radiological findings of COVID-19 pneumonia. Herein, we present three cases of COVID-19 pneumonia in South Korea, and provide clinical information as well as chest radiograph and chest CT findings.

ABSTRACT

Purpose@#It is important to consider both clinical factors and epidemiological factors in treating burn patients in emergency rooms. However, many emergency medical staffs happen to miss their chances of treating burns based on these considerations. This study is designed to find a better treatment for burn patients in emergency rooms along this approach. @*Methods@#This study was conducted based on the data of the burn patients visiting the emergency room of a single general hospital from January 2015 to December 2019. The epidemiological and clinical factors were extracted out of the data, then the relationship between the prognosis and these factors were analyzed. @*Results@#Most of burn accidents occurred at home, and were caused by hot water, soup, drinks, oil, etc. Especially, flame burns showed high hospitalization rate, surgical rate and mortality. In addition, their prognosis was poor when the affected area included facial, limb and perineal areas etc., or any inhalation burn co-existed. Also, the hospitalization rate and period increased when the treatment time was delayed or the pre-treatment was taken. There was a strong relationship between prognosis and the period of follow-up when patients were admitted during the period. @*Conclusion@#It is difficult for medical staffs to evaluate prognosis of burns in emergency rooms due to progressive damages.Precise treatment and disposition are essential for patients’ good prognosis. Therefore, medical staffs should establish treatment plans by identifying the patient’s epidemiological and clinical factors, rather than giving prescriptions based on fragmentary and superficial symptoms.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Orthostatic dizziness (OD) is defined as dizziness provoked by standing up from a supine or sitting position. It can be caused by the abnormality of autonomic nerve function system as well as vestibular system. We studied the autonomic nerve function in patients with OD. SUBJECTS AND METHOD: The authors reviewed the medical records of 50 OD patients who showed normal findings of vestibular function test and brain magnetic resonance imaging. Of the 50 patients, 34 patients were enrolled in this study. We performed a standardized autonomic function test to 34 OD patients. RESULTS: The result of autonomic nerve function test revealed abnormal findings in 26 (76%) of the 34 patients. Tests performed were for the following: sympathetic failure, including abnormal decrease in blood pressure during tilt table test, Valsalva maneuver, sympathetic skin response and heart rate response to deep breathing. CONCLUSION: Autonomic dysfunction is frequently found in patients with OD after excluding other causes with extensive investigations. Sympathetic failure or hyperactivity may be postulated as one of the possible causes of OD. Autonomic function test could be useful in understanding the mechanism of OD and treatment of OD in patients.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study was to evaluate the effect of vertical bone gain and success rate and analyze the failure cases using the hydrodynamic piezoelectric internal sinus elevation (HPISE) technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who had been operated in the three centers including Daegu Catholic University Medical Center were selected for this study. The mucoperiosteal flap was elevated, and the sinus floor was then broken by specially designed piezoelectric insert, with hydraulic pressure applied to the sinus membrane for even elevation. Afterward, implants were placed. Panoramic radiogram or computed tomogram was taken before and after surgery and at the second operation and prosthesis placement. Later, changes in vertical height were measured and compared. The survival rate was based on the criteria of Buser et al. and Cochran et al. RESULTS: In this study, 8 implants failed out of a total of 169 implants, resulting a success rate of 95.3%. These failure cases were due to insufficient initial stability or sinus membrane perforation. The mean of radiographic vertical height change at prosthesis placement was 5.7 mm (0.5-10.5 mm). CONCLUSION: In this study, HPISE technique was found to be a predictable treatment for atrophic maxilla and an alternative technique to the lateral approach.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: This study compared the strength of osseointegration as determined by the resistance to reverse torque rotation of three different hydroxyapatite coated implants in the rabbit femur model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three hydroxyapatite coated implants (HAPTITE), Tapered Screw-Vent (TSV) and BioTite-H - were used. A total of 40 implants were placed in the femur of 20 adult male rabbits. The animals were divided into two groups. In group A (n=10); one HAPTITE was placed into each right femur and one TSV was placed into each left femur. In group B (n=10); one HAPTITE was placed into each right femur and one BioTite-H was placed into each left femur. Five rabbits of each group were sacrificed at 4 and 8 weeks. The implants were removed by reverse torque rotation using a digital torque-measuring device. A total of 40 implants in 20 rabbits were used for the removal torque measurements. RESULTS: In the Group A, 4 weeks after implant placement, the mean removal torque for the HAPTITE and TSV was 70.7+/-31.6 N cm and 28.9+/-15.1 N cm, respectively. Eight weeks after implant placement, the mean removal torque for the HAPTITE and TSV was 87.9+/-26.2 N cm and 54.9+/-22.4 N cm, respectively. In the Group B, 4 weeks after implant placement, the mean removal torque for the HAPTITE and BioTite-H was 58.0+/-29.6 N cm and 37.7+/-14.1 N cm, respectively. Eight weeks after implant placement, the mean removal torque for the HAPTITE and BioTite-H was 91.4+/-47.1 N cm and 30.8+/-9.8 N cm. HAPTITE showed a higher removal torque than the other implants. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that HAPTITE increases the strength of osseointegration significantly as determined by the resistance to reverse torque rotation.
