ABSTRACT

Optimum conditions have been determined for the synthesis of linear, soluble and easily mouldable condensation products agent. Thin layer chromatographic technique was used for characterizing the products during the kinetic studies. The data obtained on TLC [Rf-values] confirm the results of viscosity and dropfalling temperature measurements. The eluent used was a 2: 9: 13 [by volume] mixture of a solvent [dioxane and DMF] and non-solvent chloroform, the separation process employed involved the use of silica gel [G 60] layers of 0.5 mm thickness. The infrared spectroscopic studies on some phenolic resins prepared by condensation in acid medium of bisphenol with furfural, hollocellulose, pure soda lignin and corncobs were carried out. The infrared spectrum of soda lignin-bisphenol resin proved the presence of aliphatic methyl, methylene, methine groups, beside OCH3 group and strong bonded OH group. A drastic changes in band position and intensity is detected in the IR spectra of pure soda lignin or corncobs and their bisphenol resin indicating that degradation processes of lignin or corncobs take place during the condensation reaction
