ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Airway allergic reactions are induced by infiltrating inflammatory cells into the human airway tissues through interactions between vascular endothelial cells, inflammatory mediators and adhesion molecules. Accordingly, it is important to study the role of adhesion molecules for the evaluation of pathophysiology of allergy. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of monoclonal antibodies against intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and leukocyte function associated molecule-1 (LFA-1) on the pathophysiology of allergy in ovalbumin-sensitized rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We developed an allergy model in rat using the intraperitoneal injection and intranasal nebulization of ovalbumine solution. We evaluated in vivo effects of ICAM-1 and LFA-1 monoclonal antibodies on the expression of ICAM-1 and LFA-1 in ovalbumin sensitized rats. RESULTS: Nasal symptoms after allergen challenge were significantly suppressed and the number of eosinophil in nasal mucosa were significantly inhibited by the treatment of adhesion molecule antibodies. Anti-ICAM-1 and anti-LFA-1 monoclonal antibodies suppressed the expression of ICAM-1 and LFA-1 in nasal mucosa of ovalbumin-sensitized rats. CONCLUSION: It is suggested that allergy can be managed by a useful treatment method using adhesion molecule antibody.

ABSTRACT

The difference of transepidermal water loss(TEWL) between normal persons and patients with eczematous external otitis was identified by statistical analysis. In this study, 20 healthy volunteers without history of atopic dermatitis and 20 patients with eczematous external otitis were participated. Measurements were performed at ear lobes and other various anatomical sites(proximal forearm, mid forearm, distal forearm, palm, upper back, lower back, leg(shin), leg(calf), and sole) by Tewameter TM 210(Courage;Rhazaka, Koln, Germany). Prior to the procedure, subjects stayed still for 30 minutes in the room where the temperature was controlled(18-23degreesC) with a relative humidity of 35-45%. The results are summarized as follows:1) TEWL values at ear lobes were higher in patients with eczematous external otitis than in normal persons(p<0.05). 2) TEWL values at other various anatomical sites except upper back were higher in patients with eczematous external otitis than in normal persons(p<0.05).

ABSTRACT

Recently world wide web is popular and the role of homepage is getting important. So the number of homepages about medicine or medical institute is increasing among homepages made in Korea, but the homepages are made by the specialist - homepage developer - not by medical personnel. Homepage specialists can promise the specialty, quality of the homepage itself, but medical personnels in the institute are better and ideal in the practical, economical aspect and in the content of information. Authors made homepage of Hallym medical center and its hospitals from September first, 1996 to December 31, 1996 only by their own work. The characteristics of this homepage are various structure and forms of 6 hospitals under the proper homogeneity, easy link or connectivity among 6 hospitals and central institute, and getting faster speed by proper restriction of large multimedia data considering present basal structure of internet. The targets of this homepage are medical personnels, students, patients, members of this institute and public. In the future foreigners are considered as targets. In conclusion, homepage of medical institute can be made somewhat effectively an d economically by its own medical personnels without the aid of homepage specialist and this first trial can be popular and participation of medical personnels to this work will be increased.
