ABSTRACT

Malignant melanoma is a relatively rare tumor. It represents 1.4-15.7% of all malignant tumors. Melanin-containing cells are normally found in the pia mater of adult human subjects. A wide variety of disorders ranging from a simple increase in normal leptomeningeal pigmentstion to highly malignant melanoma may be encountered. However, whether benign or malignant, primary melanoma of the nervous system are extremely rare. The diagnosis was confirmed by operation and biopsy. This case, which we have experienced recently, is reported with a review of the literatures.

ABSTRACT

Oligodendrolioma constitutes 3-12% of intracranial gliomas and is a slowly growing, benign tumor. Though uncommon in childhood and adolescenee, most tumors are idertified in the adult with peak at the age of 40 years. It has a predilection for frontal lobe and shows characteristic microscopic findings. Calcareous deposits arre demonstrated radiologically in 40-60%. The authors have experienced a case of large oligodendroglioma arising from the right parietal lobe in child and reviewed the literatures.

ABSTRACT

The diagnosis and treatment of pineal tumor has captivated the interest of neurosurgeons for decades. Reports indicated that the majority of these tumors were malignant and thereby couild not be surgically removed and decompressed without high mortality and morbidity. And the pineal tumor especially germinoma is one of the mosdt radiosensitive intracranial tumors. Therefore a regime of radiotherapy combined with ventricular shunting, to relieve hydrocephalus, was advocated. In addition, with development of C-T we make the diagnosis easily and assess the result of treatment. We report a pineal tumor which was treated completely by irradiation following ventriculo-atrial shunt.

ABSTRACT

Primary rhabdomyosarcoma of the frontal and temporal bone is very rare. Rhabdomyosarcoma is usually a relentless, progressive which results in death of patients in a relatively short time. The authors report a case of rhabdomyosarcoma arisen right frontotemporal bone and reviewed the literatures.

ABSTRACT

Tuberculoma, once the most frequent cause of intracranial mass lesion, are now rare. Except in cases in which meningitis develops owing to extension to the subarachnoid space, the symptoms of them are those of an expanding cerebral or cerebellar mass. A 18 years old female was admitted to Chungnam National University Hospital complaining of headache and severe vomiting. Neurological examination showed severe papilledema, trunkal ataxia and mild ataxic gait. Chest P-A and skull X-rays showed non specific finding. Total removal of mass in right cerebellar hemisphere after exploration of posterior fossa was done and it was confirmed of tuberculoma histologically. Postoperative course was uneventful and discharged with good health.

ABSTRACT

Congenital intradural intramedullary ependymal cysts of the spinal canal are very rare. The following case history is presented to emphasize the clinical features and to lead to a discussion of the origin of these cysts. We report our case with the brief review of the articles.

ABSTRACT

Fiften patients had their split-thickness skin-donor sites treated open using topical thrombin solution. This technique was more convenient compared with commonly using compression dressing technique. Application of topical thrombin solution to the donor sites quickly provided complete hemostasis and became dry within forty-eight hours. Thereafter an almost pain-free donor site and uncomplicated healing was followed in all cases. The two cardinal advantages of this treatment are thought to be followings; 1) It markedly reduces the period of discomfort from the donor site. 2) It encourages rapid, uncomplicated healing of the donor site.

ABSTRACT

49 strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were isolated from chronic wounds associated with orthopedic surgical field at Taegu armed forces general hospital. In the present report, authors have studied the Pyocin type of isolated strains by Gillies and Govans method. Also observed various interrelationship in associaton with Pyocin type, Pyocyanine formation, Oxidase reaction and antibiotic sensitivity. The results were obtained as follows; 1) Among the 49 strains tested in term of pyocin type, 41 strains(81.6%) were found to be typable and 8 strains (16.4%) to be untypable. Among the pyocin type of 41 typables, unclassified type was the most prominent type 17 strains (41.5%) and followed by type I(11 strains), 10 (3 strains), 5 (2 strains) and other type. 2) In the relationship among pyocyanine formation, oxidase reaction and pyocin type, no definite conclusion can be reached due to the paucity of tested strains except that more strains belong to the pyocin type I of the Pyocyanine negative strains. 3) In antibiotic sensitivity of isolated strains tested by plate dilution method, most of all strains were resistant to Kanamycin and Neomycin but few strains were moderate sensitive to Colistin, Polymyxin B, and Terramycin. 4) The Pyocin type of isolated strains were not related with antibiotic sensitivity to Colistin, Polymyxin B and Terramycin substantially.

ABSTRACT

Heterotropic ossifications have been known to occur around joints in many pathological conditions of the nervous system mostly in paraplegia and is affects most of the hip joint. Recently, 4 cases of heterotropic ossification in 18 cases of traumatic paraplegia have been reviewed at the orthopedic department of Kyungpook National University Hospital from April 1965 to July 1968 and the results obtained were as follows: 1. All cases were found in male of 3rd to 4th decade. 2. Heterotropic ossification affectected around the hip joint in 3 cases and in the other one case around the medial femoral condyle of knee joint. 3. Three cases affecting around hip joint expressed pressure sores on ipsilateral great trochanteric area, but the other one case affecting around medial femoral condyle had not any pressure sore. 4. In all cases, the heterotropic ossification was noted on X-ray film within 4 to 6 months after paraplegia.
