ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#The objective of this two-arm parallel trial was to compare the type of tooth movement during en masse retraction of the maxillary anterior teeth using labial versus lingual biocreative therapy.@*METHODS@#Twenty-eight subjects were randomized in a 1 : 1 ratio to either the labial or lingual group. En masse anterior retraction was performed using labial biocreative therapy in group A and lingual biocreative therapy in group B. Cone beam computed tomography scans were taken before and after retraction and the primary outcome was the type of tooth movement during anterior retraction. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests for comparisons within each group and independent-sample t-test for comparison of the mean treatment changes between the two groups.@*RESULTS@#Significant differences were found between the two groups in relation to the type of tooth movement (labiolingual inclination of the central incisor; mean difference, 5.85 ± 1.85°). The canine showed significant distal tipping in the lingual group (mean difference, 6.98 ± 1.25°). The canine was significantly more intruded in the lingual group (mean difference, 1.67 ± 0.49 mm). Good anchorage control and significant soft tissue changes occurred in both groups. No serious adverse effects were detected.@*CONCLUSIONS@#With a 10-mm retraction hook, the labial biocreative technique with the reverse curve overlay provided anterior retraction with good torque control, while in the lingual group, anterior retraction occurred with controlled tipping movement with significant distal tipping and intrusion of the canine (trial registration: The trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov [NCT03239275]).

ABSTRACT

In our study of 6 month of pityriasis versicolor patient in skin department of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital outdoor, most of the patient was of age 16-25 years (63.33%), 20% was of age 26-35 years and 16.67% was of 36-45 years. Age distribution among male patient maximum (66.67%) was of 16-25 years and among females the maximum 50% was also of 16-25 years. Mostly was male (80%) and 20% was female only 20% of the patient has got the positive family history whereas 80% with no family history of the disease, which indicates that there is no hereditary predilection. Of the patient 66.67% was unmarried and 33.33% was married. Late adolescence & early adult age groups are predominantly affected. Small children & elderly adults are infected only in unusual circumstances, such as prolonged occlusion or immunosuppresion. Prevalence reported to be as high as 50% in the humid, hot environment of Western Samoa & on low as 11.1% in the colder temperature of Sweden. About sex distribution of patients 20% were female. The study shows that majority of patients were male (20%).

ABSTRACT

Background: Autonomic control on cardiovascular activity is modified with age. Impaired autonomic nerve functions are common features of patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases particularly in old age. Objective: To observe the influence of aging process on parasympathetic nerve function. Study design: This observational study was conducted in the Department of Physiology, BSMMU, Dhaka during the period of July 2005 to June 2006. For this purpose, 60 apparently healthy elderly subjects of both sexes were selected as study group and divided into two groups-one group consisted of 30 elderly subjects with age ranged from 51-60 years and another group consisted of 30 elderly subjects with age ranged from 61-70 years. Thirty sex and BMI matched healthy adults with age ranged from 21-30 years were studied as control. Methods: Parasympathetic nerve function status of all the subjects were assessed by three simple non-invasive cardiovascular reflex tests. These were heart rate response to valsalva maneuver, heart rate response to deep breathing and heart rate response to standing (30th:15th ). For statistical analysis one way ANOVA (Post Hoc Test) and the Pearson’s correlation co-efficient tests were done. Results: Mean (± SD) of valsalva ratio were 1.50±0.23, 1.32±0.14 and 1.28±0.15; HR response to deep breathing test were 25.36±3.90, 18.82±3.35 and 15.96±3.54 beats/min; 30th:15th ratio in standing test were 1.100.06, 1.05±0.03 and 1.04±0.02 in 21- 30, 51-60 and 61-70 years age groups respectively. All the 3 parameters were significantly lower in both elderly groups compared to that of control adults (p<0.001) Again, HR response to deep breathing was significantly lower in 61-70 years age group compared to that of 51-60 years age group. Valsalva ratio and 30th:15th ratio were also lower in 61-70 years age group than that of 51-60 years group but the differences were not statistically significant. All the 3 parameters were negatively correlated with age which were statistically significant. Conclusion: From this study it may concluded that aging process substantially impaired cardiovascular parasympathetic nerve functions.

ABSTRACT

Angiomyolipoma is uncommon benign tumor of the kidney. Bilateral and multiple lesions are associated with tuberous sclerosis. We report a case with bilateral giant angiomyolipomas in a patient who had no other features of tuberous sclerosis. In this case, the involvement of the kidneys was diffuse rather than usual well-circumscribed lesions.

ABSTRACT

This study includes 15 patients of Writer's cramp. All were male and their age ranged from 21 to 57 years. They were from urban areas and of different occupation. They had obsessional pre-morbid personality. The study showed the prognosis of Writer's cramp after 12 weeks of treatment. This study showed that younger age group with early onset and less obsessional feature improved significantly by drug, psychotherapy and behaviour therapy.

ABSTRACT

Throat swabs from 1000 clinical cases of diphtheria were studied for isolation of C. diphtheria; only 21.4% were found to be positive. Most of the cases were between 1 to 4 years of age followed by 5 to 8 years. No cases were found below 8 months of age. The throat swabs taken from another 22 clinical diphtheria patients were immediately cultured at patients bed side and 63.6% were found to be positive for C. diphtheria. Time between the collection and plating the specimen was considered to be one of the main factors in the variation of the percentage isolation of C. diphtheria. From all KLB positive cases on direct smear, C. diphtheria could not be isolated on culture. Also, from all cases having definite patch(es) over tonsil(s), C. diphtheria could not be isolated. All strains were found to be sensitive against commonly used antibiotics.
