ABSTRACT

Oral Lichen planus [OLP] is a chronic lesion of the oral mucosa with unknown origin. Basement membrane changes are common in OLP and may be mediated by proteases such as matrix metalloproteinase [MMPs] and mast cell chymase. The aim of our study was to evaluate the level of serum MMP-3 in OLP compared to normal individuals and assess its clinical significance. Thirty four serum samples from patients diagnosed with OLP [12 males, 22 females, age: 42.2 +/- 10.8 years] and 34 serum samples from healthy control subjects [11 males, 23 females, age: 42.5 +/- 13.3 years] were collected and MMP-3 concentration was measured by ELISA. The serum MMP-3 level in OLP patients was higher [21.64 +/- 24.31 ng/ml] compared with healthy controls [16.52 +/- 23.63 ng/ml], but showed no statistically significant difference. A statistically significant difference was demonstrated between the two types of OLP, being more pronounced in the erosive/atrophic form 6]. The different clinical appearances of OLP are associated with significant differences in MMP-3 serum level

ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus [DM] is one of the most common disorders of endocrine glands which has a worldwide distribution and is a risk factor for oral pathology so; the purpose of the present study was to investigate the association between median rhomboid glossitis [MRG] and DM. We examined 202 Iranian patients with DM aged 10-86 years and 261 healthy subjects aged 10-28 years and the diagnosis of MRG was made based on clinical features. The examination indicated that 13 [6.43%] diabetic patients and 4 [1.53%] of control group had MRG. There was a significant difference in the prevalence of MRG, between patients and control group. MRG showed no association with other variables [age, sex, duration of DM, drugs, FBS, A[1C]]. In the present study the prevalence of MRG in diabetics was much higher than that of controls

ABSTRACT

Many epidemiological surveys have been conducted different parts of the world to determine the prevalence of various types of dental anomalies. There are regional and ethno-racial variations in the prevalence of dental anomalies. To assess the prevalence of dental anomalies in a group of Iranian dental patients in Shiraz dental school, Iran. 414 dental patients referring to dental school and aged between 15-60 years old [257 female and 157 male] were examined clinically and radiographicaly for the presence of dental d=anomalies, using orthopanthomography. Date were collected and analyzed by Chi-square and Fisher exact tests. Fluorosis was the most prevalent anomaly [7.72%] followed by missing of the wisdom teeth [7%], impaction of teeth [4.34%], microdontia [2.89%], missing of the mandibular second premolars [2.65%], supernumerary teeth [2.4%], missing of the maxillary lateral incisors [1.6%], dilaceration [1.44%], invagination [1.44%], and taurodontism [0.96%]/ In the comparison of these results with those of other studies, it was indicated that these anomalies occur at different frequencies among various countries and communities in the world. Recognizing these anomalies will facilitate the endodontic, prosthodontic, periodontic and surgical management of such teeth

ABSTRACT

Honey is one of the traditional medicines used for treatment and prevention of various illnesses. This study aims to assess the in vitro antimicrobial effect of honey on Streptococcus mutans. This experimental study was conducted in Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, The Minimal Inhibitory Concentration/MIC effect of a type of commercial honey on S. mutans isolates was investigated by Agar well diffusion and broth microdilution assays. For comparison a carbohydrate solution with sugar content similar to that of natural honey was used as a control. The MIC values of honey for 88.3% of tested strains were 75% v/v that were significantly different of the MIC values of the carbohydrate solution [p<0.001] and the average inhibition zone of undiluted honey on the S. mutans isolates was 13mm. No inhibition zone was observed for undiluted carbohydrate solution in any isolates [p<0.001]. Honey [Apis mellifera] has bacteriostatic activity when tested in vitro. However, pharmacological standardization and clinical evaluation of this effect are essential before using honey as a preventive measure for dental caries

ABSTRACT

The existing clinical trials have shown that topical corticosteroids are often effective in the management of oral inflammatory diseases. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness and safety of a new mucoadhesive prednisolone tablet with that of triamcinolone acetonid paste in the management of oral lesions such as RAS-EM -pemphigus vulgaris-recurrent intraoral herpes -OLP and chemical burn. In this randomized comparative study, 60 consecutive patients with oral lesions were recruited. The patients were divided into 2 groups, one receiving topical triamcinolone acetonid 0.1% paste and the other prednisolone 5 mg mucoadhesive tablet for 2 weeks. The profiles of mean lesion sizes and mean pain measures did not show any difference between the prednisolone and triamcinolone groups. It was found that prednisolone 5mg table is useful as triamcinolone paste in the treatment of oral inflammatory lesions with minimal side effects
