ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of Cone-beam Computerized Tomography [CBCT] linear measurements in dry mandibles by comparing them with direct measurements. Two human dry mandibles were used in this study. Thirteen sites were selected on each mandible. Specimens were scanned by CBCT and linear measurements were made using Planmeca Romexis 2.3.0.R software. Mandibles were cut into sections at marked locations and the same distances were measured by a digital caliper. Differences between two methods were assessed using paired t- test. The mean differences for bone height, bone width and the crest-canal distance between CBCT and digital caliper measurements were -0.47 +/- 1 mm, -0.14 +/- 0.78 mm and 0.00 +/- 0.76 mm respectively. The differences were only, significant for bone height measurements [P<0.05]. There was a high carreltion between the result of CBCT and gold standard. The results of this in-vitro study on mandible indicate that, although there is a statistically significant difference for bone height measurements between the two methods, the difference is not significant in Clinical applications. Thus, CBCT was shown to be a useful technique for preoperative dental implant planning

ABSTRACT

The effects of aggressive periodontal disease in several clinical studies are shown. Knowledge, attitude and practice of dentists in this regard can lead to better diagnosis and timely treatment of patients. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the knowledge, attitude and practice of dentists on aggressive periodontal disease in Qazvin. This was a cross-sectional study carried out on 140 general dental practitioners in the province of Qazvin [Iran] in 2010. A questionnaire was the data gathering tool of the study and prepared according to the reliable sources. After completing the questionnaire, the data was analyzed by SPSS software using the Pearson correlation test, t-test, and ANOVA. The average knowledge score [p=0.004; F=5.89], attitude [p=0.018; F=4.18], and practice [p=0.468; F=0.765] of individuals decreased with increased experience. The highest mean attitude score [1.3 +/- 5.19] and function [1.16 +/- 3.44] were found in dentists under 30 years and the lowest average score [1.03 +/- 2.64] in individuals older than 41 years. The average score of knowledge, attitude, and performance was higher in women than men [1.76 +/- 5 versus 1.5 +/- 3.48; p=0.003; T=-3.04]., Based on results found in the present study, the inclusion of topics regarding the aggressive periodontal disease through retraining courses seems to be necessary in promoting the professional knowledge of dentists

ABSTRACT

The primary purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the oral health and gingival status of individuals undergoing renal dialysis in Qazvin province. One hundred eighty Iranian patients on hemodialysis participated in the study, and were divided into three subgroups: 1] those who have been on renal dialysis for less than one year; 2] those on renal dialysis for 1 to 3 years; and 3] those on renal dialysis for longer than 3 years. Four dental indices: the debris index [DI]; the calculus index [CI]; the plaque index [PI] and the gingival index [GI] were used. Data were complied and analyzed by using 1-way analysis of variance [ANOVA]. The results of this study showed 100% [n=180] of the individuals undergoing renal dialysis were suffering from mild to moderate gingivitis. The means of debris index was 1.65, 2.07, and 2.15, with SD+ 0.67, 0.47 and 0.48 respectively for the subgroups. The means of plaque index were 1.72, 2.16 and 2.26 with SD+ 0.64, 0.36 and 0.42 respectively for the revealed groups. The means of calculus index were 1.58, 2.02 and 2.09, withSD+0.58, 0.28and 0.39 respectively for the subgroups. The means of gingival index were 1.43, 2.97 and 0.06 with SD+ 0.67, 0.38 and 0.35 for the subgroups respectively. Tukey's post hoc test showed significant difference in all indices between the first and second subgroups, and between the first and third subgroups, while no significant difference was found between second and third subgroups. It was concluded that periodontal disease was present in renal dialysis patients who showed unacceptable level of oral hygiene and which may increase the illness. Finding led to the conclusion that the renal dialysis population in Qazvin Province, regardless of length of time on dialysis, was in need of comprehensive professional oral care and self-care instructions
