ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the expression of CD133 and CD44 proteins in gastric stromal tumors (GST) and their clinical significances. Methods The expression of CD44 and CD133 proteins in the GST tissues of 112 patients was detected by immunohistochemical staining. The relation between the expression of CD44 and CD133 proteins and the clinicopathological characters was analyzed. The survival and prognosis of GST were also analyzed. Results Both CD44 and CD133 were expressed on the cell membranes. The expression rates of CD44 and CD133 were 58.04 % (65/112) and 42.86 % (48/112) separately; the co-expression rate of CD44 and CD133 was 27.68 % (31/112). CD44 and CD133 were negative in normal peritumoral tissues. No correlation was found between CD44 and CD133 and the clinicopathological parameters including gender, age and lymphatic vessel invasion (all P>0.05), but the expression levels of CD44 and CD133 in patients with the mitotic count ≥ 5/50 high-power field, large diameter and vascular invasion were significantly higher (all P0.05), but the co-expression level of CD44 and CD133 in patients with tumor diameter ≥5 cm was significantly higher than that in patients with tumor diameter < 5 cm (χ2=5.040, P=0.025). The overall survival rate of the patients with co-expression of CD44 and CD133 was shorter than that in other groups (χ2 = 8.758, P= 0.001). No correlation was found between CD44 and CD133 expression (r=0.126, P=0.210). Multivariate analysis with the Cox regression models showed that the tumor diameter ≥5 cm (P=0.042) and co-expression of CD44 and CD133 (P=0.003) were significantly associated with poor prognosis. Conclusion CD44 and CD133 as robust cancer stem cell markers in GST might be the prognostic factors.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the diagnostic value of quantitative analysis of the color change of iodine staining for early esophageal cancer. Methods A total of 58 patients with suspected esophageal diseases were recruited to this study. The lesions were stained with lugols iodine, and biopsies were performed.Quantitative analysis of color change under endoscopy was also performed by analysis software and the results were compared with pathological findings. Results A total of 62 iodine-unstained lesions in 58 patients were found, includiug 19 chronic inflammation,13 low-grade intraepithelial neoplasia,11 high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia and 19 squamous cell cancer. The color parameters of R/R'(red) and H/H'(hue) were significantly different among the four groups (P<0.05).Conclusion Computerized chromoendoscopy is helpful in determining pathological characteristics of esophageal lesions, thereby improving the accuracy of endoscopic biopsy and the diagnosis rate of early esophageal cancer.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the relationship of different histological types and degrees of infiltration of gastric adenocarcinoma on lymph node metastasis. Methods The clinical data of 1 615 cases of gastric adenocarcinoma were analyzed retrospectively, and the rate and number of lymph node metastasis in different histological types and with different depths of invasion were statistically analyzed. Results There were 46 227 lymph nodes collected from 1615 cases, with an average of 28.62 per case. Lymph node metastasis was found in 1046(64.77%) cases of gastric cancer and 10 173(22.01%) lymph nodes. Different TNM stages showed different rates of metastasis: T1(M)2.78%,T1(SM)13.61%,T2 55.59%,and T3 84.84% respectively, while the metastatic rate for histolgically well-differentiated carcinoma was 50.25%,and for low-differentiated earcinoma was 78.95%,and both had statistically significant difference(P

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the relationships of peroxisome proliferators activated receptor ?(PPAR?) and matrix metallo protease-7 ( MMP-7) with gastric cancer ( including low and high grade atypical hyperplasia). Methods One hundred and twenty gastric tissue specimens (four groups) were collected by gastroscopy or surgical operation, including 31 patients with chronic gastritis, 25 patients with low-grade atypical hyperplasia, 27 patients with high-grade atypical hyperplasia, and 28 patients with gastric cancer. The expression of PPAR? and MMP-7 were observed by immunohistochemical technique and analyzed by statistic methods. Results Both of them have high expression in the groups of gastric cancer respectively, and the high combined expressions of them were found in gastric cancer and high-grade atypical hyperplasia. Conclusion PPAR? and MMP-7 were the important differential signs of the gastric cancer and precancer by inference, the combined expression of PPAR? and MMP-7 was the evidences in differential diagnosis among gastric cancer, high and low grade atypical hyperplasia and gastritis.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the effect of subfascial endoscopic perforator surgery(SEPS) for the(treatment) of recurrent venous ulcer. Methods SEPS Was preformed on 56 limbs with recurrent venous(ulcer),and ulcer healing was assessed at follow up.Results Fifty-five limb ulcers healed in 10~49 days, one limb ulcer was not healed after 90 days, but healed after ligation of lesser saphenous vein. The patients were followed up for 1 to 3 years,1 case recurred after 6 months and it healed with antibiotic treatment;2 cases recurred after 18 months, and both healed after high ligation of lesser saphenous vein. Conclusions SEPS is effective and safe in the treatment of recurrent venous ulcer.SEPS is minitraumatic with few(complications).
