ABSTRACT

Objective To understand the current distribution and characteristics of advanced schistosomiasis patients who accepted medical assistance in Hunan Province in 2015,so as to provide the evidence for perfecting the policy and measures of the medical assistance to advanced schistosomiasis patients. Methods The patients who had been diagnosed as advanced schis-tosomiasis were verified and confirmed according to the standard of the medical assistance to advanced schistosomiasis patients in Hunan Province in 2015. The epidemiological survey was conducted to investigate the demographic characteristics, history of diagnosis and treatment, and medical assistance to these persons. Results There were 3850 advanced schistosomiasis patients who accepted the medical assistance in Hunan Province in 2015,and among them,2664 patients were male(69.19%),and 1186 were female(30.81%). Most of them(92.82%)came from the main schistosomiasis endemic areas, such as Yueyang, Changde and Yiyang. There were 2369 cases of ascites(61.53%),1466 cases of splenomegaly(38.08%),15 cases of colon proliferation and dwarf(0.39%). The mean age of advanced schistosomiasis patients who accepted the medical assistance was (62.94 ± 11.67)years old, with 64.31% of them being more than 60 years old. The age of initial diagnosis of advanced schistoso-miasis was(53.85 ± 21.32)years old,and it was concentrated in 40-60 years old(68.57%). The mean duration of advanced schistosomiasis was(9.58 ± 10.06)years,and it was mainly distributed in 10 years(75.95%). The mean duration from initial diagnosis of schistosomiasis to advanced schistosomiasis was(22.33 ± 14.20)years. The priority of the medical assistance to ad-vanced schistosomiasis patients was given to the county hospitals(76.57%);and the effective rate of assistance was 94.46%. To-tally 86.57% of the patients with advanced schistosomiasis got the medical insurance(rural cooperative medical care, urban medical care,etc.). Conclusions The burden of the medical assistance to advanced schistosomiasis patients is still heavy be-cause of many patients and low cure rate in Hunan Province. The ascites patients and high age patients should be the important objects of the medical assistance.

ABSTRACT

Objective To examine neuroinflammation, oxidative damage and neuron loss in the contralateral parie-tal lobecortex of TBI model mice, and to investigate effects of berberine chloride on such secondary damage. Methods TBI model was established by a weight-drop hitting device and mice in berberine group were administered intragastrically with berberine chloride (50mg/kg.day) for 21 days.Immunofluorescence staining was used to assess activity of microglia and astrocyte.Immunohistochemistry was used to assess DNA oxidative damage, neuron loss and expression of COX-2 and iN-OS.Results Activation of microglia and astrocyte, expressions of COX-2 and iNOS and DNA oxidative damage were ob-viously increased by TBI,(19.82 ±1.88)and(16.96 ±1.69)、(13.79 ±4.32)and(8.67 ±0.96)、(27.86 ±5.38) and (16.00 ±7.59)、(31.92 ±6.57)and(24.79 ±2.78)respectively (P0.05). Conclusions TBI can cause neuroinflammation and oxidative damage but not neuron loss in the contralateral parietal lobe cortex.Berberine chloride can significantly suppress neuroinflammtion in the contralateral parietal lobe cortex after TBI.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the effects of measures on the schistosomiasis control after the earth quake in Lushan County so as to provide the experiences for post-disaster schistosomiasis control. Methods The measures taken in schistosomi-asis control after the earth quake were reviewed in Lushan County in 2013 and the epidemic situation of schistosomiasis was in-vestigated and the results were analyzed. Results The schistosomiasis control in floating population and the control of Oncome-lania hupensis snails were enhanced and no schistosome infections were found in both human and livestock. No infected snails and infested water were found. Conclusion The measures of schistosomiasis control after the disaster are effective in Lushan County and the goal to prevent major plague after the earth quake is achieved.

ABSTRACT

Objective To understand the epidemiological characteristics of patients with advanced schistosomiasis in Hunan Province,so as to provide the evidence for formulating the advanced schistosomiasis prevention strategies and measures. Meth-ods The data of advanced schistosomiasis patients were collected and analyzed retrospectively with the cross section research method and description method in Hunan Province,2012. Results There were 5 722 advanced schistosomiasis patients in Hu-nan Province, and among them,4 112 patients were male(71.86%),and 1 610 were female(28.14%). Totally 5 311 patients came from the schistosomiasis endemic areas(92.82%)and 411 patients from non-schistosomiasis endemic areas(7.18%). The prevalence rate of advanced schistosomiasis was 8.46/10 000. The mean age of advanced schistosomiasis patients was 60.30 ± 11.63 years, and the youngest was 17 years old and the oldest 92 years old. In the age composition of advanced schistosomiasis pa-tients,the greatest number of cases was in the 60-70 years age group (32.72%). There were 3 595 cases of ascites type (62.83%),2107 cases of splenomegaly type(36.82%),11 cases of dwarf type(0.16%),and 11 cases of colon proliferation type (0.35%). Conclusion The prevalence rate of advanced schistosomiasis is relatively stable in Hunan Province, and the age of the patients showed an old aging trend. The salvation of advanced schistosomiasis patients in non-endemic areas should be strength-ened.

ABSTRACT

Dongting Lake area is one of the major marshland schistosomiasis endemic areas in China. In recent years spatial epidemiology is widely used in the research of schistosomiasis which is a new opportunity to break through the current wander-ing situation of schistosomiasis control. In this article both the generalized and Dongting-Lake-specific epidemic indicators of schistosomiasis are reviewed to provide the basis to construct the schistosomiasis Geographic Information System GIS database of Hunan Province.

ABSTRACT

Objective To observe influence of atorvastatin combining with berberine on blood cholesterol level and carotid atherosclerotic plaques in patients with acute artery atherosclerosis cerebral infarction disease. Methods Fif-ty-five cases of acute cerebral infarction patients were randomized into 3 groups: group A (n=28), group B (n=11) and group C (n=16). Group A, B or C received atorvastatin 20 mg (qn), atorvastatin 40 mg (qn) or atorvastatin 20 mg (qn) +berberine 0.4 g (tid), respectively. All groups were then followed up for 3 months. The total cholesterol(TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C),high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol(HDL-C and the changes of carotid atherosclerotic plaques including total plaque area (TPA), crouse score, carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and the stability of carotid plaques as well as the serum levels of creatinine(Scr), alanine aminotransferase(ALT), aspartate aminotransferase(AST), were compared among three groups. Results After 3 months, the TC, TG and LDL-C were de-creased in all three groups. There were statistically significant differences in the TC and LDL-C among these three groups (P=0.011,P=0.033) after treatment. The compliance rate of group C (75.0%) was significantly higher than group A ( 32.1% ) and group B (45.5%) in LDL-C (P=0.026). Both berberine combining with atorvastatin and atorvastatin monotherapy(20mg could significantly reduce crouse score. Conclusions Berberine can significantly enhance the benefi-cial effects of atorvastatin on LDL-C and the crouse score in patients with acute artery atherosclerosis cerebral infarction patients.

ABSTRACT

Recent studies have indicated that periodontal diseases have close relationship with ischemic stroke.Periodontal diseases are not only closely associated with the risk factors for ischemic stroke, such as hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and hyperhomocysteinemia, but also closely associated with the formation and development of atherosclerotic plaques.Furthermore, periodontal diseases also affect neurological deficits and cognitive impairment in patients with ischemic stroke. This article reviews the relationship between periodontal diseases and ischemic stroke as well as its possible mechanism.
