ABSTRACT

Purpose@#The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of attachments and palatal coverage on stress distribution in maxillary implant overdenture using finite element analysis. @*Materials and Methods@#Four maxillary overdenture 3-D models with four implants placed in the anterior region were fabricated with computer-aided design. 1) Ball-F: Non-splinted ball attachment and full palatal coverage, 2) Ball-P: Non-splinted ball attachment and U-shaped partial palatal coverage, 3) Bar-F: Splinted milled bar attachment and full palatal coverage, 4) Bar-P: Splinted milled bar attachment and U-shaped partial palatal coverage. Stress distribution analysis was performed with ANSYS workbench 14. 100 N vertical load was applied at the right first molar unilaterally and maximum stress was calculated at the implant, peri-implant bone and mucosa. @*Results@#The use of the ball attachment showed lower maximum stress on implant and peri-implant bone than the use of the milled bar attachment. But it showed contrary tendency in the mucosa. Regardless of attachment, full palatal coverage showed lower maximum stress on implant, peri-implant bone and mucosa. @*Conclusion@#Within the limitation of this study, ball attachment improved stress distribution on implant and periimplant bone rather than milled bar attachment in maxillary implant overdenture. Also, full palatal coverage is more favorable in stress distribution.

ABSTRACT

In edentulous mandible, implant supported overdenture was considered as a first treatment option. Konus type attachment supplies rigid support and cross arch stabilization so that more favorable force transmission and distribution can be attained. In the dentistry, computer aided design-computer aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) system makes it possible to fabricate restorations with high precision and effectiveness. Recently, Palladium-silver (Pd-Ag) alloy which is millable has been developed. This article presents that application of CAD-CAM Konus type attachment can be provide satisfactory stability and function on four-implant supported mandibular overdenture.

ABSTRACT

When an implant-supported maxillary full-arch fixed prosthesis is planned for patients with the horizontal and vertical bone resorption induced by periodontal disease, it is necessary to consider the masticatory function, esthetics and phonetics when placing implants. For this reason, thorough clinical and radiological diagnosis is necessary. Extensive bone and soft tissue grafting may be required as well. Since there is no clear guideline for proper number of implants, segment or splinting of substructure and method of retaining prosthesis, these should be considered during diagnostic process. This clinical report describes a patient who has experienced several tooth extractions and periodontal treatment due to severe periodontitis on maxilla and mandible. With bone and soft tissue graft before dental implant placement, the patient have satisfactory result in esthetic and functional aspect with the implant-supported maxillary full-arch fixed prosthesis opposing mandibular natural dentition.

ABSTRACT

Chronic inflammation has been proposed as one of the main molecular mechanisms of aging and age-related diseases. Although evidence in humans is limited, short-term calorie restriction (CR) has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in aged experimental animals. We reported on the long-term treatment of daumone, a synthetic pheromone secreted by Caenorhabditis elegans in an energy deficient environment, extends the life-span and attenuates liver injury in aged mice. The present study examined whether late onset short-term treatment of daumone exerts anti-inflammatory effects in the livers of aged mice. Daumone was administered orally at doses of 2 or 20 mg/kg/day for 5 weeks to 24-month-old male C57BL/6J mice. Increased liver macrophage infiltration and gene expression of proinflammatory cytokines in aged mice were significantly attenuated by daumone treatment, suggesting that short-term oral administration of daumone may have hepatoprotective effects. Daumone also dose-dependently suppressed tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha)-induced nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) phosphorylation in HepG2 cells. The present data demonstrated that short-term treatment of daumone has anti-inflammatory effects in aged mouse livers possibly through suppression of NF-kappaB signaling and suggest that daumone may become a lead compound targeting aging and age-associated diseases.

ABSTRACT

The surgical correct1on of blepharoptosis is accomplished by utilizing certain materials, the levator, the frontalis or the superior rectus muscle. The perfect postoperative results are complete cover of the eye on lid closure, adequate mobility when blinking, normal lid fold and no diplopia. The authors obtained good results in two children of congenital ptosis by attaching medial one third of superior rectus muscle to lid margin which was reported by Motais in 1897. The operation which use the superior rectus muscle is not favored recently because of complicationals such as partial corneal exposure, vertical diplopia, difficulty in blinking, and partial obliteration of the upper conjunctival fornix. But, the results of these simple physiologic proceures for binocular paralytic ptosis were remarkable without any complications as the aboves for 3 months of follow up check.

ABSTRACT

The cataract surgery is most common among the major eye operations and nearly almost has been performed under local anesthesia. We has been censidered that emotional condition of patient during operation and the blood pressure is variable according to emotional condition. So, in order to evaluate the relationship of blood pressure change during operation and complication of cataract surgery, we began this survey. From Dec. 1979 'to Dec. 1980, we had collected the 70 cases that were performed lens extraction under the local anestbesia (retrobulbar injection and akinesia with 2% lidocaine) at our oph. department. The 70 cases were observed in the respect of B.P. change before, during and after operation. 1. Of the 70 cases, 21 cases (30%) were resulted in increased B.P.. 2. There are 4 cases (6%) that were increased B.P. over 20 mmHg. 3. There was no complication due to increased RP..
