ABSTRACT

Xanthogranulomatous epididymitis is an atypical form of severe destructive epididymal infection, characterized by massive inflammatory cell and foamy histiocyte microscopically. We report two cases of xanthogranulomatous epididymitis that presented as epididymal inflammation with fluid collection in old aged patients, and resulted in orchiectomy. We suggest that xanthogranulomatous epididymitis should be considered as one of the differential diagnosis in epididymitis with abscess formation.

ABSTRACT

A clinical observation was made on 116 patients of cryptorchidism who had been admitted to the Department of Urology, Gil Genersl Hospital during 34 months from March, 1992 to January l995. The results were as follows: 1. The age distribution varies from to 1 to 33 years and the most frequent group was l to5 years old(62%). 2. Bilateral cryptorchidism was found in 22 cases(19%), and in the case of unilatera1, right in 52 cases(44.8%) and left in 42 cases(36.2%). 3. Of the 138 testes, most frequent location was in the inguinal canal in 123 testes(89.1%). 4. Orchiopexy was perrormed on 130 testes(94.2%) by subdartos pouch technique and 7 testes were performed the orchiectomy 5. Among the associated anomalies, the most common anomaly was inguinal hemia in 131 cases and others were contralateral hydrocele, hypospadias, congenital heart disese and syndactyly.

ABSTRACT

It has been suggested that diseased and anomalous kidneys are more susceptible to injury. While horseshoe kidney is the most common congenital anomaly of renal fusion, occurring in about one in every 400-500 births, reports of the horseshoe kidneys associated with renal trauma are rare. Herewe now report our experiences with two cases of renal trauma on horseshoe kidney.

ABSTRACT

A review of 234 patients with cervical cancer during the last 5 years was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of routine cystoscopic examination in staging cervical cancer. Cystoscopic abnormalities suggesting bladder invasion of the cervical cancer were found in none of the 127 patients with clinical stage 1 and 65 patients with clinical stage 2. In 7(22.6%) out of 31 patients with clinical stage 3 and in 4(80%) out of 5 patients with clinical stage 4. markedly bullous edema and hyperemia suggesting suspicious bladder invasion was identified on cystoscopy. Mucosal biopsy was done in 5 or them which revealed no pathologic invasion. Incidentally found transitional cell carcinoma was found in one patient. From these observations, it can be concluded that routine cystoscopy is not recommended in cervical cancer with clinical stage 1 and 2, and is indicated only in clinical stage 3 or greater.

ABSTRACT

Chronic prostatitis has various symptoms and many problems in management. Recently a lipidosterolic extract of Serenoa Repens, Permixon has been reported to reveal potential antiandrogenic and anti inflammatory activities on prostate. Then we used Permixon on chronic prostatitis and following results were obtained. Permixon is administered orally in dose of 160mg., b.i.d. for 60 days in 31 cases of chronic prostatitis in 1st group, Permixon 160mg, with Cipro-floxacin 500mg, b.i.d. in 35 cases in 2nd group and Placebo 2 tablets, b.i.d. in 30 cases in 3rd group. In 1st group 36 cases(77.4%) were improved, 29 cases(82.8%) in 2nd group and 7 cases (23.3 %) of 3rd group were improved. Permixon is an effective drug in chronic prostatitis and there was no changes in laboratory findings and negligible side effects were noticed

ABSTRACT

Mechanism and process of bladder regeneration were experimentally observed in this study, using 3S Korean mongrel dogs weighing 15~25kg. The animals were divided into two experimental groups. In the first group (A) of 27 dogs subtotal cystectomy and urinary diversion were underwent to study the influence of urine on the bladder regeneration and the second group (B) of 8 dogs in which only subtotal cystectomy was performed was investigated for the process of regeneration. In the group A the dogs were sacrificed every week in the first one month, every 2 weeks in the following 5 months and every 4 weeks thereafter. The bladder was examined morphologically and histologically and no remarkable regenerative process was observed. In the group B 8 dogs were sacrificed at intervals of 2 or 4 weeks after 6 months of initial operation. The distinct regenerated bladder was noticed and its completion took place in 36 weeks. The area of regeneration showed a definite thick walled pouch with normal uroepithelium and normal color. From these observations it is postulated that urine might have played a role in regeneration of the bladder. possibly by mechanical stimulation and a further study will be necessary to investigate a possible chemical factor.

ABSTRACT

Urethral catheterization has become a more common clinical procedure. Many investigators claim that high incidence of infection is encountered in urethral catheterization, while others have underestimated the incidence. In this study an attempt has been made to clarify the degree, pathogens and frequency of urinary tract infection following a single catheterization in normal and uninfected bladder of 30 inpatients without urological symptoms. No antibiotics or sulfa-drugs were used prior to admission or during this study. Urine for quantitative culture was collected by aseptic catheterization and self-voided mid-stream urine obtained 24 and 48 hours following catheterization for colony count. If necessary, urine was also collected after 7 days. Colony count over 10.000 per ml. was defined as bacteriuria and over 100,000 per ml. as significant bacteriuria. The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1) Of 30 cases, bacteriuria was observed in 7 (23.3%). Escherichia coli in 3, Pseudomonas aeruginosa in 1. Staphylococcus+ Diphtheroids in 2 and Streptococcus fecalis in 1. This includes Escherichia coli over 100,000 per ml. and significant urinary symptoms. 2) A single aseptic catheterization might lead to bacteriuria and a focus of urinary tract infection.
