ABSTRACT

The human body and its parts and organs are invariably used in medical teaching institutions for academic purposes. Legal provisions for the preservation of such specimens are made in anatomy Acts across the country. However, after they have been used, the specimens are not disposed of in a proper manner. This is a public menace and forces the authorities concerned to carry out unnecessary investigations. We report a case in which the bodies of two foetuses that were brought for medico-legal autopsy were later found to be formalin-preserved “museum specimens” that had been used for anatomical study. We wish to emphasise the need for guidelines for the proper disposal of anatomical museum specimens.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate the effect of aqueous solution of Biophytum sensitivum leaf extract (BSEt) on normal and streptozotocin (STZ)-nicotinamide-induced diabetic rats.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Diabetes was induced in adult male Wistar rats by the administration of STZ-nicotinamide (40, 110 mg/kg b.w., respectively) intraperitoneally. BSEt (200 mg/kg) was administered to diabetic rats for 28 days. The effect of extract on blood glucose, plasma insulin, total haemoglobin, glycosylated haemoglobin, liver glycogen and carbohydrate metabolism regulating enzymes of liver was studied in diabetic rats.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>BSEt significantly reduced the blood glucose and glycosylated haemoglobin levels and significantly increased the total haemoglobin, plasma insulin and liver glycogen levels in diabetic rats. It also increased the hexokinase activity and decreased glucose-6-phosphatase, fructose-1, 6-bisphosphatase activities in diabetic rats.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>The results of our study suggest that BSEt possesses a promising effect on STZ-nicotinamide-induced diabetes.</p>

ABSTRACT

The analgesic activity was tested by Eddy's hot plate method in albino mice using combination of Pentazocine [1 mg/kg] with Phenytoin [10.20 mg/kg] and Pentazocine [1 mg/kg] with Ketorolac [10.20 mg/kg] was given by intra-peritoneal administration, The results showed a significant increase in reaction time [analgesia] in albino mice and hence the present study indicates that combination of Phenytoin and Ketorolac with Pentazocine has significant prolonged analgesic effect as compared with analgesic effect produced by Pentazocine alone
